Ukimido (Floating Pavilion), Lake Biwa, Japan

One of my favourite places in Japan is this gorgeous floating pavilion on the western shores of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake.

Last year when I visited, it was raining which created a very different look and feel. This image was captured a couple of weeks ago while in Japan running a couple of photo tours.

The weather was subdued which for this particular location, works well. There are so many compositions available that you could easily spend a couple of hours or so just wandering around.

Shirahige Shrine Torii, Lake Biwa, Japan

This stunningly simple but beautiful torii gate stands silently in the water of Lake Biwa (Japan's largest lake) and it overlooks the 2,000 year old Shirahige Shrine that resides across the road.

This is definitely one of our top three most favourite locations in Japan. Sunrise, sunset and all throughout the day, in sun, rain, fog, the torii looks stunning. we love its simplicity.

Shirahige Torii, Shiga, Lake Biwa, Japan

Another stunning sunrise at Lake Biwa last Saturday while leading a workshop here in Japan. we remember getting a gorgeous sunrise at the same location this time last year too. Seems that Lake Biwa is our lucky charm.

We had arrived at this 2,000 year old torii gate the day before to photograph sunset but there was no colour to be had so having convinced our workshop clients to leave the hotel at 3.45am the following morning in the hope of catching some colour at sunrise was all the more sweeter once the sky lit up orange.

We shall be returning to Lake Biwa next Wednesday and we wonder if we can make it three out of three sunrises.

Shadows on Mt Fuji at Lake Yamanaka, Japan

Taken during a sunrise shoot last weekend. I have shot Lake Yamanaka before but this morning the clouds were amazing, the water was a little ruffled but the lakeside was quiet and peaceful.

Having set up the camera, I initially opted to shoot the scene long exposure to create a sense of tranquillity, but it was when this lone white cloud rolled on in that had me reach for the camera again. The shadow of the cloud on Mt Fuji was simply too good to pass up.

Lofoten January 2025 Photo Workshop NOW LIVE

Daniel's Bridge & the Witch's Hat, Reine, Lofoten, Norway

One of the most iconic scenes in Lofoten has to be this view right here. The view possesses many elements that when combined, help to create a stunning scene. There's the bridge, apparently named after Daniel (who is he?), the houses which always have the outside lights on which help to inject some warmth into the image and if the tide is high, the lights reflect in the water and of course the iconic mountain behind which some say looks like a witch's hat.

You also need fresh snowfall to avoid footprints on the bridge and any disturbed snow on the hand rails so this involves either a very late finish or a very early start and as we were housed just a five minute walk down the road, a dawn shoot was preferred.

Stunning Sunrise over the Isle of Harris, Scotland

One of the challenges for me as a workshop leader (and for other leaders too) is trying to decide where exactly you should take your clients in order for them to have a great opportunity to capture a beautiful image.

We turned up 45 minutes before sunrise on our final morning and waited, and waited, and waited for the colour to arrive. Ten minutes before, I muttered that perhaps we were not going to be quite so lucky, which really disappointed me but then with three minutes to go before the sun rose, BOOM, the colours suddenly arrived and filled the sky. I could not have been happier for everyone (and myself of course).

The clouds were stunning, so many layers, shapes and patterns. The inclusion of the little white house on the far right of the image frames the entire scene so well to my mind.

After running a dozen workshops on Harris and Lewis since 2017, I have decided to pass the baton over to my excellent Landscape Locations Photography Workshops & Tours workshop leaders Dave Nelson Photography and Mal Crawford Photography. They will be running all of my Scotland photography workshops from here on in (Harris and Lewis, Skye, Glencoe and Assynt).

I shall of course return to Harris and Lewis but on solo shoots, where I can fully immerse myself in the sheer beauty of the island.

Bheag (The Small Beach), Isle of Harris, Scotland

It has been absolutely fantastic to be back on the truly stunning island of Harris and Lewis this week while running my spring photo workshop.

Here is an image that I captured today at my favourite beach on the island, Traigh Bheag otherwise known as The Small Beach. We arrived at 11am three hours after high tide and spent a glorious hour with my clients with help from my brilliant workshop assistants Dave Nelson Photography and Mal Crawford Photography who have been invaluable this week (thanks guys as always).

Tomorrow we all head back home and the wind and rain has arrived this evening but we have been so, so fortunate with the weather this week and it culminated in a stunning sunrise this morning.

Garry Beach and the Caisteal a' Mhorair Sea Stacks, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland

In preparation for the start of our week long photography workshop to the stunning Harris and Lewis this Saturday, we have been looking through the images that we were so fortunate to have captured last November and this one of the many sea stacks that reside on Garry Beach, just north of Stornoway really stood out to us.

We love beaches and sea stacks and when you combine them in one location, we are so happy. When we captured this particular shot, there was a wonderful blank sky which really helped to have the sea stack stand out. Mix in some careful consideration when composing for the foreground rocks, and we have an image that we love. Sure the light was flat but for this kind of image, that works perfectly as no highlights were lit from the shining sun.

Isolated Cloud, Chiesetta di San Pierino, Tuscany

Captured last May during our week travelling around Tuscany without clients. It was wonderful to discover the same locations that we shoot in September (when we run our workshop) looking all green and lush with an abundance of flowers.

However this beautiful chapel (which is considered the 'little sister' to the iconic Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta) has ploughed fields surrounding it as it is located on a hill near the Camugliano estate. It was built in the mid 1400's.

Regarding the cloud, we waited patiently for a few minutes before one came along and made our day.

Amazing Aurora Borealis, Henningsvaer, Lofoten

Okay, we may have experienced the northern lights seventeen out of our twenty visits to Iceland and on half of our half dozen visits to Lofoten but this display on Saturday evening while wandering back to our vehicles after a meal out with our photo tour clients was off the charts.

What started as a mild green bow over the mountains to the west of Henningsvaer soon exploded with the wildest greens we think we have ever witnessed. They were so bright, that all that could be seen was pure white and the shapes that danced above us were absolutely mesmerising. This is one memory that shall stay with us forever and we were overjoyed that our clients got to experience it too.

Now the snow has arrived (finally), Lofoten is looking like the winter wonderland that we have always experienced and with a bit of luck the sky will remain clear after the sunny day we are having and the aurora shall glow above us once again and perhaps even light up the snow with a tinge of green. Fingers crossed.

We have everything from quarries, waterfalls, lone trees, mountains, lighthouses, boathouses, and stunning lakes and tarns (known as Llyns in Wales). There will be plenty of opportunity to use filters in the pursuit of capturing long exposure images as well as understanding when and where to use them.

From the atmospheric Dinorwic Quarry and the haunting sight of the barracks that used to house the slate quarry workers to the tranquil setting of Llyn Padarn and the famous lone tree at sunrise. From the waterfalls of Ceunant Mawr, Afon Lloer and Ogwen to the mountain views of Tryfan and the Snowdon Horseshoe, from the waters of Llyn y Dywarchen and Llynnau Mymbyr to the corries and valleys of Cwm Idwal and Ogwen, there really is something for everyone.

You will be out on location an hour before sunrise until just after sunset and your accommodation for the two nights will be based at Bangor. You will also be driven between locations in a new luxury Mercedes V-Class minibus too along with dedicated photography tuition from two tutors. Lofoten Winter Photo Tour, 12th – 18th March 2024 Join our fabulous Lofoten winter photo tour in March 2014, for a chance to capture the mystical Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic landscape of northern Norway.

Steller's Sea Eagles, Rausu, Hokkaido, Japan

Yesterday was an amazing day for we had an incredible opportunity to spend an hour out on a sea eagle tour boat for an hour just off the coast of Rausu in Hokkaido, Japan.

Landscape Locations tour guide Francis Ansing and Melvin Nicholson decided on Thursday evening to make the three hour drive down to Rausu at 4.30am the following morning and have our clients experience an hour on a boat in -12°c temperatures.

On arriving, we quickly sorted out our camera bags, set up our cameras complete with a long lens, and having donned a life jacket, off we ventured out to the floating icebergs where the some of the world's largest eagles congragate.

There were stunning Steller's Sea Eagles and White Tailed Eagles and as tray after tray of dead fish were throw overboard, the eagles swooped and swooshed around the boat as they got their fill. We have to confess that they looked amazing, and when an eagle stares directly into your eyes, they certainly look quite intimidating and dominating.

It was a fantastic experience and one that we shall repeat on our February 2025 Hokkaido photo tour.

Last night we ventured to our first location during our nine nights here in Hokkaido and this beautiful shrine down on the shoreline of Lake Toya was the perfect place to start.

Despite a lack of freshly fallen snow, the scene was still beautiful and it was not long before the wonderful pink hues of dusk arrived and filled the sky behind the shrine.

Today we are arriving in Otaru and sunset shall be spent photographing a selection of rocks in the sea.

Winter Wonderland, Lofoten, Norway

Having returned home from running two wonderful photo workshops in Iceland, our mind has now wandered to our upcoming two workshops in Lofoten in early March.

The first workshop is sold out but we have added a second workshop for those who fancy a little Norwegian magic before the winter season ends.

The images below were captured on a DJi Mini 3 Pro drone but this year my DJi Air 3 drone shall accompany us instead. We cannot wait to return and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Norwegian archipelago.

Svínafellsjökull Glacier, Vatnajökull, Iceland

Captured this week while Landscape Locations were leading a photography workshop in Iceland. This truly stunning glacier (which is thought to be around a 1,000 years old) always looks just so impressive.

The colours, textures, shapes of the ice look extraordinary. Our workshop participants were suitably impressed with the views too.
