Dammy Ajibade of TClarke was recently named the JTL National Electrical Apprentice of the Year 2024 at their annual awards ceremony and won the coveted Paul McNaughton Electrical Apprenticeship Award. This year's winner of the EDA Product Knowledge Award from Edmundson Electrical went to Rhys Doolan.

Rhys joined Edmundson Canterbury in December 2022 as a Graduate Trainee. On top of picking up all the knowledge in the warehouse, around the office and on the Trade Counter, Rhys got his head down and began his EDA Product Knowledge Workbook journey.

In just 9 months Rhys completed all 12 Product Knowledge workbooks, achieving 11 Distinctions and 1 Credit. An amazing achievement in such a short space of time; congratulations Rhys!

Nathan Grant, Rhys' manger, said the following:

''Rhys is a pleasure to have in the team and what impresses me most is his eagerness and willingness to learn. He always gives 100% in everything he does''.

A phenomenal achievement in such a short amount of time, Rhys.

The EDA Product Knowledge Workbook programme is available to all employees throughout Edmundson who may want to brush up on their knowledge, or who are starting from scratch in the industry.

This year's winner of the EDA Apprenticeship Award from Edmundson Electrical went to George Cookson.

George started as an Apprentice at our Edmundson Morecambe location and completed his Apprenticeship to Distinction standard in March 2023; however the journey was not smooth sailing. He accomplished this wonderful achievement after life-changing surgery.

His manager, Mike Finley, who attended the awards ceremony with George last week said the following about George:

''I should have known when I received George's detailed and completely over-the-top CV that this lad was something else. After interviewing him, I was left in no mind that this lad, given the correct guidance and training could go on to great things in our Company.

We took him on as an EDA Apprentice in April 2021 and George excelled in everyway. He was continually exceeding my expectations and I found that when giving him tasks that exceeded his years and experience he was not only completing them with aplomb but was also coping with the pressure of these expectations and deadlines.

He was given the Learning Partnership Apprentice of the Month award in July 2021.

By Christmas however, it became apparent that all was not well with George and that the normally full of beans, enthusiastic young man was struggling with his health. He struggled through the next 3 months until eventually he was admitted to hospital for tests in March.

Shortly after his stay in hospital the lifechanging news came that George had severe sclerosis of the liver, and if a donor wasn't found, his prospects of surviving were very slim.

From April, we suspended George's apprenticeship on full pay until such a time where he could return to us.

In July 2022 after testing his family members, his father was identified as a liver donor match and arrangements were made for George to receive a full liver transplant using his father's liver. The 15 hour operation to both George and his father was a success and within 2 weeks, George came in to see us - or should I say, bounced in.

In October 2022, George started a phased return to work, and was back in full time by the November. He resumed his apprenticeship and completed to Distinction standard in March 2023. George has since been taken on full time and is the Trade Counter supervisor.

George is a valued and important member of our team. He's quirky, funny, conscientious, a worrier and a hard worker. I keep reminding him he's not the finished article yet, and there is still an awful lot to learn - but I'm positive that George will achieve all he sets out to do and will be a massive asset to Edmundson in the coming years.''

Now in its 10th year, the Electrical Distributors' Association (EDA) held its annual Learning Achievement Awards recently at London's Shard, celebrating individuals from across the UK who have shone in their Apprenticeship or their EDA Product Knowledge studies.

This year was the biggest award ceremony of this type, with 21 trophies going to deserving individuals.

The winners were accompanied by their colleagues, managers, supporters and family to join the celebrations.

All individuals should be extremely proud of their achievements - congratulations to you all!
