A few recently completed loft insulation jobs ventilated with matched profile vents under the Affordable Warmth Scheme. Adequate ventilation is essential in a home. Airflow through the loft clears the moisture pushed upwards in warm air before it allows condensation to cause damp, mould and rot in the timber structure.

It's also for this reason that you should not board your loft onto timber as the cold surface boarding will condense the rising moisture underneath it where the timbers are restricting airflow. Raised boarding systems should be used to allow airflow under the boards to clear moisture before it causes damp mould and rot. This is important not only for structural integrity but also because mould spores will contaminate the air quality in the homes living space and cause and exacerbate health problems, especially with existing respiratory issues.

Insulate, ventilate!

Might have been a bit wild outside while we were running the country surveying but it's always salad weather in a warm home.

And no, I am not returning to chef work for you.

The entire country has poorly thrown in insulation, passed by Building Control officers that recently asked me exactly how much I was putting in as they'd never seen it at the proper thickness before. Everyone wants the absolute minimum amount for the cheapest price.

Now everyone is losing their minds over the price of oil that they mostly waste by their own design.
Even new builds with 2x200mm so badly installed its only 2-250mm overall.
Everyone has actually wanted to spend as much as they can burning oil so there's no room for complaining now.
Building Control don't know how to use a measure.
Energy Performance Assessors don't know how to use a measure.
It's your home, if you can use a measure then you can tell the difference.

If you want to continue buying a few extra tanks of oil a year then go about your business quietly.

What if I told you, you don't need to burn so much oil...

Just a friendly reminder that 300mm of snow will insulate to around the same as 100mm of loft insulation as it also traps the air. When we reach 3 feet deep of snow you'll be at the minimum standard of loft insulation.

Although if you do already have the minimum standard of 300mm of loft insulation you may find it lasts slightly longer than snow.

Little known fact about plumbers. They fly south around harvest time and spend the winter perched in the argan trees like goats. Can't get hold of them again until about May.

That's why they don't see any need to insulate water tanks and pipes to the required standard, or at all. No chance of freezing and bursting in those temperatures. They also like to root around in your insulation for berries and make a right mess leaving big cold patches everywhere.

Always check their bill isn't in Moroccan Dirham. Divide by about 12.6 for the exchange rate.

More tidy lofts for tidy energy savings. Keeping all that heat in for longer. Unless it's 30 degrees outside and then it's needed to keep the heat out. Oh. Not summer yet. February? How long was January?

A recent Saturday job insulating our friends at MUDC Magherafelt. No interruptions to their week and they'll be working at full speed now instead of huddling round the kettle! Looking forward to Affordable Warmth grants being sorted out in record times now!

A useful house warming present completed today.

This recently bought property had its insulation severely compromised by years of items squashing it down. It's now been tidied, fluffed and topped up to make sure it's at full potential; like a well shaken winter duvet. A compliment of tile vents ensures the loft stays clear of condensation problems. An EPC band upgrade should be on the cards shortly!

Ever put on an extra blanket when you’re chilly in bed to keep the warmth in and stay cosy? Loft insulation is like the extra blanket, but for your house. This blanket of material helps to keep the warmth in your home and reduce heat loss through your roof.

You’ll use less energy to heat your home. And saving energy means saving money.
