The Stables at Althorp House have a respectful, peaceful air that still encompasses the yard. Until the start of the 20th century, the stables were home to 100 horses and 40 grooms. This year, the horses happily moved back down to the stables where they belong for the first time since then.

The striking Palladian hall you first enter inside Althorp House incorporates a series of country scenes by the English artist John Wootton, which lends the hall its name. The details of the hall’s construction have yet to be fully recorded, but it is probably by Colen Campbell, although he died before the work was undertaken. Roger Morris completed the commission in 1733.

Part of Henry Holland’s 1783 enlargement enclosed the existing outside wall and allowed direct access to the South Drawing Room. In Edwardian times, the corridor was called Painters’ Passage, and Lord Spencer returned it to the decor of his great-grandfather’s time and gave it its previous name.

This large bronze bust of Henri de La Tour D’Auvergne stands proudly at the end of the Library inside Althorp House. It was made in 1695 by Jerome Derbais.

Directly above the mantlepiece in the Saloon is the Honourable John Spencer, grandson and heir of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough and page-boy Caesar Shaw, painted by George Knapton, surveyor of pictures to George III.

We are open to the public from today, 1st July. Guides will be available throughout the house to answer any questions you may have.

The passion of the Fifth Earl Spencer, also known as the Red Earl, was foxhunting, and he commissioned this life-size bronze of his favourite Pytchley foxhound, named Forager, in 1893. Forager stands proud in front of the fireplace in the Billiards Room.

The South Drawing Room, both comfortable and elegant, boasts 15 portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds - a good friend of the Spencers. This many-windowed room looks out onto the gardens and the Stables.

Althorp House’s Wootton Hall, named after the artist John Wootton, boasts a magnificent plaster ceiling. Each one of the 200 ceiling roses is unique. It was designed by the Scottish architect Colen Campbell. The delicate plaster roses complement the elegant proportions of the room.
