** Diageo steps closer to its 2030 ESG targets with investment into the glass industry decarbonisation in North America and India**

Diageo, the multinational whisky and spirit distributor, has announced the provision of seed funding for the not-for-profit research and technology organisation Glass Futures Limited, enabling them to expand their activities into North America and India. Glass Futures Limited is currently investigating the best method to decarbonise the glass industry, and this new funding will allow the company to explore new ways to further reduce glass carbon emissions in both markets.

Andy Griffiths, Head of Sustainable Procurement at Diageo, said: “We’re looking forward to expanding our partnership with Glass Futures into North America and India to explore lower-carbon glass production. This is key for the success of Diageo’s and the wider glass industry’s decarbonisation efforts. Partnering on innovative approaches is vital to making a net-zero world a reality, and we are hopeful that this collaboration will bring great results in other markets going forward.”

Glass is a recyclable product, but the carbon footprint it makes in production is a challenge across a range of industries. This new investment will not only enable Glass Futures Limited to expand its operations and impact but also help Diageo reach its goal of reducing Scope 3 carbon emissions by 50% (against its 2020 baseline) by 2030. As two of Diageo’s largest markets, North America and India offer the company a chance to significantly impact its carbon emission goals.

This isn’t the first time that Glass Futures Limited has partnered with Diageo. In 2021, Glass Futures, Diageo, and Encirc trialled the use of waste-based biofuel-powered furnaces for Diageo’s Black & White Scotch whisky brand in the UK, reducing their carbon footprint by 90%.

***The Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker has announced its latest collaboration with one of the world’s most influential visual artists, Asian-American artist James Jean.***

The design celebrates the Lunar New Year that takes place on the 10th of February and features a vivid and dynamic interpretation of 2024’s zodiac animal, the Wood Dragon.

James, who lives in Los Angeles, said: “The Year of the Dragon is rich in symbolism and tradition in Asia. Many consider the dragon the most powerful animal in the Chinese Zodiac, and the Wood Dragon felt remarkably close to me because of the natural elements prevalent in my own work. Evolved from traditional depictions of Chinese dragons, my dragon is composed of flowers and organic elements, from which emerge tendrils and arcing lines, evoking the idea of roots and connection. With Johnnie Walker Blue Label Lunar New Year, we wanted to create a dragon that felt different, new, and innovative - respect for the past but also looking into the future with optimism; in the same way that Johnnie Walker stands for progress through that incredible 'Keep Walking' spirit.”

James, who was born in Taipei and raised in New Jersey and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, is renowned for his multifaceted designs of contemporary subjects. Fusing traditional Chinese scroll paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, and Renaissance portraiture with his contemporary style, James sought inspiration from the layered flavors that Master Blender Emma Walker and her team bring to Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

James further added: “There are hidden elements in the picture as well – layers to be discovered, just like the layers in this incredible whisky. I included chrysanthemums, from which flow liquid gold - inspired by Johnnie Walker whiskies - and hummingbirds sipping on the precious nectar. ***Tennessee Distillers, Sugarlands, release 120-proof unaged corn whiskey with stars of the hit TV show Moonshiners.***

On the 26th and 27th of January 2024, Mark Ramsey and Eric "Digger" Manes, stars of the hit television show Moonshiners, will be at the Sugarlands Gatlinburg distillery in Tennessee to launch their ‘Mark and Digger's Mountain Legacy Corn Whiskey’ in collaboration with the Sugarlands Distillery Company.

The Mark and Digger's Mountain Legacy Corn Whiskey is a 120-proof, unaged whiskey created to celebrate the craft of homemade spirits, also known as moonshine, that once thrived in secret across the region of Appalachia.

"Our new Mountain Legacy Corn Whiskey is made with a recipe Digger and I have been perfecting for years," said Ramsey. "We had the privilege of learning the art of making whiskey from scores of old backwoods liquor producers, and we're excited to work with our friends at Sugarlands to bring this traditional corn whiskey to everyone."

"This is a tried and true backwoods liquor recipe," explained Manes. "No fancy frills, just good ol' fashioned authenticity in every jar."

Moonshine is a homemade corn whiskey, typically associated with the Appalachian Mountains and the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee; however, moonshine also has roots in West Virginia and Kentucky. Because the government once taxed alcohol on the size of the still it was produced in, Moonshine was developed as a way to avoid taxes, as it only required a small still to make which could be hidden from officials—hence the name ‘Moonshine’ because it was made in secret at the dead of night.

To mark the release of ‘Mark and Digger's Mountain Legacy Corn Whiskey,' Mark and Digger will appear at Sugarlands' Gatlinburg distillery, located at 805 Parkway, from 2–5 p.m. on Friday, January 26, and Saturday, January 27. This latest release is the third collaboration between Sugarlands and Mark and Digger, following on from their Rye Apple Moonshine launched in 2015 and Mark & Digger's Hazelnut Rum in 2017.

**Middle West Spirits Completes Distillery Expansion Making It One Of The Largest Independent Distillers In North America**

Middle West Spirits has successfully completed the expansion of its distillery located on Courtland Avenue in the Short North District of Columbus, Ohio, making it one of the largest independent distilleries in North America. The property expansion has augmented the distillation capacity by tenfold, enabling the company to cater to the increasing demand for its products and further develop its in-house Custom Distilling Partnership Program.

The Scottish Islay-based whisky discovery platform, Bevvy, has closed a $1.5-million seed funding round, allowing the company to expand its operations into America and increase its current market share. Founded in 2021 by leading whisky expert Laurie Black, mathematician Atanas Tonchev, and medtech entrepreneur Lucas Heron, the technology-led platform gives users the ability to access a database of whiskies, primarily using scanning technology. By downloading the Bevvy app and using the camera on their mobile phone, a person can scan the label of any whisky bottle and uncover tasting notes alongside indicative valuations for their collection.

Finance Director Greg Gormley added, “In one of the most challenging fundraising environments I can recall, Bevvy’s successful raise underlines its dominant and growing position as a critical tool among whisky consumers and collectors. The interest and demand in whisky are growing at a pace not seen before. However, the market is fragmented and disjointed, with an absence of easy-to-access tools and information. There is a considerable hole in the market for a value-add, information-led app that allows a bottle of whisky to be fully understood, in terms of taste, history, and pricing. Bevvy is addressing this need and is finding its audience is both engaged and growing at a phenomenal pace.”

Since its launch in 2021, the company has built 120,000 regular active users and a database of whiskies that includes 150,000 images, the retail and auction pricing of those whiskies, and the software furthermore monitors market sentiment to arrive at a dynamic, live valuation. Recently, the company has begun to grow its presence in the US, and its database work to expand its catalogue of Bourbon bottles is well underway.

The new investment comes principally from Scotland-based angel investors and existing shareholders. However, part of its investment came from a Denver (US) based family office, and it was predicated that the software would be live and active in the US market by the middle of 2024. Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff, Gordon’s, and Guinness, has released its first global consumer trends report, built using its in-house supervised learning and AI modeling tool called the ‘Foresight System.’

The ‘Foresight System’ is a powerful piece of software that monitors and tracks global conversations from a wide range of web sources and social media platforms. This data provides insight into how consumer trends are developing across the world. Essentially, the tool is a highly sophisticated listening service that uses supervised learning and AI modeling to collect and combine data from multiple sources, group the data into trends and sub-trends, and produce real-time reports.

The tool has been developed by Diageo and its data and insight partners and includes the monitoring of conversations in English, Chinese Mandarin, and Spanish across social media, YouTube, television, online forums, and digital media.

The report has uncovered five global trends that are shaping consumer behaviour. These are:

Neo-Hedonism: consumers are re-evaluating how they spend their money, searching for innovative ways to experience pleasure in their everyday lives. This is one of the newer trends but on the rise (+39%), with consumers searching for meaningful & unique experiences over wealthy gifts.

Betterment Brands: consumers’ conversations show them to be increasingly eco-conscious, becoming more aware of the environmental & social impact of their choices. Although not a new phenomenon its importance cannot be downplayed, with consumers increasingly (+44%) seeking ways to align their purchasing decisions with their values.

Conscious Wellbeing: there has been a transformation in how consumers define health and happiness, with consumers having a more holistic view of wellbeing. The report found over 2.7M discussions globally of self-love (+40%).

Expanding Reality: technologies like AI, VR, and AR are revolutionising how consumers perceive and interact with reality.

Conversations around the technologies has risen 94% including a 134% rise in discussions of AI-enabled relationships – the fastest growing micro-trend identified in the report.1

Collective Belonging: consumers are increasingly seeking real and virtual spaces that embrace unity, acceptance, and allow them to engage with like-minded individuals. The report uncovered 28.7M mentions of the topic globally (+41%) making it our most discussed trend, including a 42% increase in conversations around championing inclusive cultures.

**RD1 Spirits Set To Expand Its Operations With A $5-Million Brand Destination**

RD1 Spirits has released plans to build a £4.8-million distillery at The Commons, a Lexington-based entertainment district in Kentucky.

RD1 Distillery at The Commons will be open in August 2024 and create 11 jobs within the community. The brand destination will function as a fully working distillery that tourists can visit and explore, as well as producing one barrel of bourbon per week for research and development purposes. The building will be more than double the size of its current tourist destination, the ‘Tasting Room & Gift Shop’ located on Manchester Road, Lexington, and be set over 10,215 square feet of space.

“RD1 is expanding the boundaries of Lexington’s Distillery District and strengthening the appeal of what the great city of Lexington has to offer,” said Mark Stoops, RD1 shareholder and advisor, and Lexington business leader. “As one of the newest brands added to the Kentucky Bourbon TrailⓇ, RD1 Distillery at The Commons will help boost hometown pride and contribute to the vibrant, winning atmosphere of our community.”

Visitors to the new distillery can expect to find outdoor seating split over two levels of the building, an interactive history-meets-innovation experience of Lexington’s bourbon milestones; a fermentation-to-distillation tour; four private tasting rooms; a glass-enclosed R&D lab for wood finishing of Kentucky Straight Bourbon and barrel thieving; a VIP speakeasy tasting room; a craft cocktail bar; a gift shop; and space for private events.

As well as an 800-gallon pot still, the distillery will include a 175-gallon pot still, a 750-gallon fermenter, and a 1,000-gallon mash cooker.

Bourbon industry veteran Don Hardwick of Louisville – also a shareholder in RD1 – is leading the distillery design of RD1 Distillery at The Commons. “We want RD1 Distillery at The Commons to serve as a cornerstone of education, exploration, and entertainment in Lexington,” Tetterton added. “As a brand founded by Lexington entrepreneurs, we are motivated by the bourbon giants of our past and look to honor them with bourbon growth right here in our hometown.”

In December 2023, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced approval of $521,000 in incentives for RD1’s project from the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority, upon recommendation by the Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. “This exciting new investment will provide a great bourbon experience for visitors to the Fayette County area. As we continue to see growth in Kentucky’s signature bourbon industry, projects like this are also adding momentum to our tourism efforts,” said Gov. Beshear. “I want to congratulate RD1 Spirits’ leadership and look forward to the positive impact the project will have on the tourism industry and the local community.”

In July 2023, RD1 Spirits were added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, a road trip-style experience for bourbon lovers to visit established in 1999 by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

**Battle For The Title Of ‘Most Expensive Whiskey In The World’ Continues As 30-Year-Old Irish Single Malt Sells For $2.8 Million**

The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. is currently celebrating the $2.8 million sale of their rarest triple-distilled single malt — The Emerald Isle — making it the world’s most expensive bottle of whiskey (that we know of) ever sold.

In November 2022, a bottle of The Macallan 1926 fetched $2.7 million at auction, a title that has now been usurped by The Emerald Isle. The bottle in question was bought by a well-known and prolific collector from America — Mike Daley. Daley’s collection consists of several thousand bottles of Irish, American, and Scotch whiskies.

The Scotch whisky producer, Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery, has released a limited edition single malt to mark the distillery's 125th anniversary. The Aberfeldy 25-Year-Old is the result of two decades spent in refill hogsheads and butts, and a final year spent in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks under the care of five-time International Whisky Competition 'Master Blender of the Year' and Aberfeldy Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod. The celebratory expression boasts a nose of luxurious Highland honey, ripe peaches, and wild strawberries; whilst on the palate, the whisky offers delicate fruits on a bed of malt and cereal with a hint of vanilla and coffee.

The Aberfeldy limited release marks a significant milestone in the distillery's history. Since 1898, Aberfeldy has been producing high-quality single-malt from its distillery based in the heart of Scotland. The distillery was founded by John Alexander Dewar, a pioneer in the world of Scotch whisky, and has since grown extensively. In 1998, the distillery, as part of a larger buyout, was purchased for US$1.94 billion by Bacardi-Martini.
