Ultimately, the best way to deal with trauma is therapy, but it’s not foolproof — less than half of the people who enter therapy find it to be helpful for them. Also in places like the UK, there’s a massive shortage of therapists. It can be very expensive and there can be a long wait to see one.

This is why it’s also helpful to be able to self-heal. To me, therapy simply means healing, and you don’t have to see a professional to be healed, although it is something I advocate for.

There are also a lot of different types of therapy, but the idea in most cases is to first acknowledge and identify what happened and then begin to dissect it.

To do that outside of a clinical environment, you can instead sit down with your village and begin to look at the relationships you have had and think about what happened, and more importantly, how those people showed you love.

What did it look like?

What did it feel like?

When you felt pain, could you go to that person for emotional or physical comfort?

Could you go to that person consistently? Or was that person not available to you all of the time?

Did that person sometimes shun you?

These basic questions will help you to understand how your past relationships shape who you are now and what your current attachment style is.
