Well after a fab days training yesterday, I am pleased to say that everyone who works out at the super friendly Hitsona Barnstaple is in excellent hands as not only were there 3 of their instructors on the Emergency First Aid at work course but also 3 members!

6 Great First aiders on hand to help, although we did learn not to trust Hannah with a baby! 🤣

22/11/2023

I am running an Emergency First Aid at work course at Hitsona Barnstaple on 12th Dec.

They have offered up the last few places to anyone else that is needing to renew/obtain this qualification.

Dependant on the total number attending the course cost will either be £50 or £60 per person.

Please let me know if you would like a place!

Another lovely training session with the youth at week 3 covered dealing with fractures, dislocation, sprains and how to move casualties with suspected spinal injuries.

The group had great fun learning how to do slings and how to make improvised slings, we looked at how to remove a helmet if you needed to and stabilising the spine.

They all did a great job!

Everyone
Last week at skate south moulton youth first aid sessions, the young people learnt about recognising and treating shock, treating bleeds and how to bandage, they had a lot of fun wrapping each other up!
We also made blood to help us understand how it helps us fight infection and clot. Then they had a go at CPR! Such a busy night with so many happy faces!

A great day's training at Nirvana Hair, Beauty & Laser Salon: Aveda Barnstaple.

Seven of the team are now qualified as Emergency First Aid at Work, First aiders!

They are a great group of fun people and the salon is stunning.

It is great that Kathy knows the importance of getting her staff trained so that all their clients and staff stay safe in the event of a first aid incident. You never know when you may need it!

Everyone

A fab evening spent tonight training the lovely youth at Skate Molton CIC.

It is week one of a four week course giving the young people the skills to deal with injuries that may happen at the park or whilst skating.

They learnt how to carry out a primary survey (checking breathing), then a full body check (secondary survey), how to contact the emergency services and knowing what to tell them and then how to place someone in a recovery position.

14 young people are well on their way to helping their friends, family or members of the public.

They all worked really hard! Well done!

Our seven year old Henry has just completed 106 miles on his bike!

He has ridden the Devon coast to coast over 4 days starting at Plymouth RNLI station, ending in Ilfracombe's RNLI station today.

He has endured, cold wet weather and big hills all in aid of raising funds for the RNLI

I have written a daily account with lots of pictures, this can be found on the North Devon Explorers page (my outdoor business page).

So far he has raised a magnificent £3030!!!!

Please have a look at what he has been upto using the FB posts and if you would like to make a donation, please use the following link:

First aid is all about being willing and able. Breath is best but if you are not able or not willing to breathe into a casualty then hands only CPR is still effective (it saved my dad's life 2 years ago when he suffered a cardiac arrest).

It was in the middle of COVID and a passer by saw my dad collapse, he didn't want to breathe into my dad due to not knowing him and the risk of getting COVID. He did continuous compressions for 15 minutes until the paramedics arrived. Andy's hands only CPR saved dad's life, without this the paramedics have said that Dad would never have made it.

Compressions should be delivered to a depth of:
5-6 cm for adults
5 cm for children (aged 1-18 yrs)
4 cm for babies (0-1 yr)
And at 100-120 beats per minute-the same tempo as Bee Gees "staying alive"

Today I was training the lovely Big Sheep Flock, getting them updated ready for the summer season kicking off on the Easter weekend.

Not only was First aid covered but also the team were getting in the mood to be the backing dancers for The Big Sheeps summer music events! 🤣

I have had a fun few days at Broom Hill Estate updating the team in the Emergency First aid at work (1 day course) and the 3 day First aid at work qualification.

They are now ready for a busy season, kicking it off with a fab festival in 2 weeks time, celebrating the final camp out for Max, the boy in the tent who has raised £700,000 for North Devon Hospice! Get in touch with them for tickets!

My manikins were so excited to visit the sculpture gardens, they decided to add their own touch to the exhibition!

Last weekend I had the pleasure in teaching a lovely group in Bishops Nympton.

It was a 2 hour training course on:
how to deal with an emergency situation
Calling 999
How to do CPR and use a defibrillator
How to put someone in the recovery position

Everyone had a lot of fun, they learnt a lot and felt confident in how to use the village defibrillator.

Get in touch if you would like me to come and train your village up in basic first aid.
