We are hosting a Death Cafe next Monday! Anyone is free to join this event to have cake, drink tea and discuss death ☕️🍰

🧁 A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion where people can share their thoughts and feelings about death. We will form small groups and chat about anything that comes up.

🧁 Though the topic can feel daunting, this will be a safe and casual space to increase awareness of and provide conversation about death.

🧁 “Death Cafe” itself is an established social franchise which has been popularised since 2017, and can be organised by anyone interested in discussing death.

⭐️ We will also accept any donations that can be given for Nottingham Hospice at the event.

💙 Please note that while we may come with our own grieving, these spaces are not grief support groups or counselling sessions but a welcoming space to share!

Dr Kieran Sweeney talks about his experiences as a cancer patient 13/09/2021

Dr Kieran Sweeney, who was a general practitioner & honorary professor of general practice in the South West, died from a rare form of lung cancer in 2009. Here is a video of him talking about his experiences as a cancer patient.

I think we can all learn something from what he says, especially about the importance of empathy & honesty when speaking to patients, no matter what our role may be.

Our main aims of the society are to
- encourage all discussion around palliative care, it’s role in medicine and how we can support patients who are dying

We will do this in the future by running
- Communication workshops on important topics such as breaking bad news
- OSCE style workshops (particularly important for palliative care elements for CP3s)
- Q&As with medical professionals who work in the field of palliative care

We hope to act as a platform for people who are interested in palliative care to get in touch with each other!

Thank you!

Thank you so much for liking the UoN Palliative Care Society page! We decided to set up the society in order to create a supportive environment to discuss and further our awareness of palliative care.

We hope to welcome experts in the field to discuss their work, create sessions focusing on advanced communication skills and provide the opportunity for us all to discuss difficult topics in a friendly and caring setting. All while throwing in some fun too!

P.S If you haven’t already please can you become a member on the SU website (link in bio!). We need to get to the magic 25 to become a fully fledged society! We promise it will be worth it!
