Honestly, I’ve been trying to frame and comprehend what is going on right now - enough to somehow form some kind of thoughtful response in order to stand in solidarity with and for the black community. I feel quite helpless and without any answers, but that’s no reason for me not to speak up and show my love and support.
The explicit evil surrounding the murder of George Floyd is nothing short of sickening and heart-breaking. Yet another black man has fallen prey to the overt racism that still exists in our day. No longer can this be just another shocking media story that eventually falls to the back of our collective subconscious.
I’m a white guy who loves and produces black music and, at this time, I can’t possibly lay down another kick pattern, bass-line or chord progression without paying homage and respect to the people from whom this music derives and belongs.
How is it that a people group who’ve arguably contributed the most to the world of music STILL suffer such despicable treatment at the hands of people who have contributed far less? For me, a sense of outrage has been quietly increasing for quite some time and, although outrage towards racial injustice is right, I can’t help thinking that it’s simply not enough.
I’m just beginning to realise that, it’s up to us, individual white men and women, now more than ever, to leave ignorance and indifference behind in an effort to understand precisely where we currently fit amongst the pervading context of racism in the 21st century.
In what ways, big or small, are we perpetuating ongoing inequality towards black people? Admittedly, this might be the first time I’ve sat down and intentionally thought about this and I’m willing to bet that this line of inquiry is gonna kick up some surprising answers. Nothing will change unless we put on the humility required to shine a spotlight on ourselves and discover how we are continuing to fail the black community on a day-to-day basis.
This marks the beginning of my journey, I hope it’s the beginning (or the continuation) of yours.
To my black friends and family, I am sorry that you're hurting so badly as a result of people who look just like me - whether because of racial acts of violence, systematic oppression or simple day-to-day passivity on my part. I want you to know that I am listening, learning and praying and I will be doing everything I can to be better and stand with you.
I want to thank you, the black community, for everything you've contributed to my industry. I owe all of my musical inspiration to your creativity whether past or present. 🖤
