Alex's fundraiser for RNIB - Royal National Institute of Blind People 08/03/2024

Hi everyone, in June I will be undertaking the legendary Fan Dance challenge in aid of the RNIB sight loss charity. The 24 km Fan Dance hike forms the first major hurdle on the infamous UK Special Forces Selection Course and is an indicator as to whether a potential recruit has the physical and mental determination to complete the course.

The challenge begins with an immediate ascent of Pen y Fan mountain in the Brecon Beacons, which is 2,907 feet (886 m) high. The route then descends on the other side of the peak with a pathed route to the halfway point before turning around and reversing the route. The return leg provides an even tougher challenge with the evil ascent back up the Fan known as Jacob’s Ladder.

I have no idea of the time I will get (SAS recruits must do it in 4 hours and 10 mins), I am simply going to do it as fast as my legs will take me.

I don’t put much on Facebook apart from stuff to do with the driving school but I would like to raise as much money as I can for this worthwhile charitable cause. I have set up a Just Giving page so please visit it and donate whatever you can, any amount is much appreciated.

I often post on my page about people who have recently passed their test, but to mix it up a bit I thought it would be good to give an insight into the learners who are relatively new to driving.

Erin started learning with me 6 weeks ago and was kind enough to do a quick Q&A at the end of her lesson today to give her thoughts on her learning journey so far.

Q. Why are you learning to drive?

A. To have much more freedom and independence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. What were your anxieties about learning?

A. I was worried about crashing the car, how safe I would feel, and the bad experiences I had heard from other people about learning to drive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Did you have any preconceived ideas about what would happen on the first lesson?

A. Initially I didn't know what to expect, but following the home visit (before the lesson) the course programme was explained and I had a good idea of what would happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. How did the first lesson go with regards to expectations versus reality?

A. It was a lot calmer and less stressful than I thought. Things in the lesson were introduced more gradually than I had assumed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. What are your thoughts on my instructional technique and the course programme?

A. I like the fact that the lessons are delivered in a relaxed informative manner. I also like the fact I know what will be covered in the next lesson. The Workbook is useful for reflecting on the lesson and identifying any areas for improvement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Erin for the feedback, keep up the good work!

Hi

Due to technical issues my old LDC Facebook site is no longer accessible and I have had to set up a new one (hence the recent re-posting of old posts). If you get the opportunity please can you share the new page with as many local friends as possible so that it can once again gain prominence in the HD8 area.

Your help and support is much appreciated.

Thanks

Alex
