The Sack The Boss Story
Back in 2009, I was working in Mercedes Benz in Giffnock. I was 33 years old, and it was my 11th year working in the Motor Industry, My wife had just had our 2nd child too. So here I was... married to the girl of my dreams, in a Full-Time job with 2 lovely brand new Mercs in the driveway. My son was 5 and my daughter was 3, we had the perfect wee family.
There was a problem though... As nice as it was to have a steady job, and a nice income, I felt a little trapped if I'm honest. The weeks were rolling into months and the months into years. I was the guy people would come to buy their dream car, and most of the customers I dealt with clearly had way more money than I did even though back then I was doing ok at circa £50k a year. But, they had holiday homes abroad and were buying cars that if I'm honest with you...I couldn't afford, I could drive 1 as a company car, but didn't actually have the income levels to buy the £100k CL500 that I was selling to a total stranger. Most importantly I noticed the 1 BIG thing that most of my customers had, was time. They had the money, but they also had the time to enjoy it and enjoy life. I didn't have that luxury. I had to keep trading my time for money!
Like most of us, my world was 1 of 8am Monday I had to be at work. If I wanted holidays or days off I had to request them. If I wanted to spend the day with my kids because the sun was out, I couldn't do that, as yep, I had to ALWAYS go to work. 6 days a week, 60+ hours a week, I was always working. I remember my wife used to make jokes that people thought we were divorced, as at weekends when she was out at a friends house visiting with the kids or lunch with some of the family, I was in that Car showroom, putting “dreams on driveways”... I always felt that I had forgotten about the most important persons dreams, mine and my family's.
Their dream was to see more of me, not for me to be in work 60 hrs a week and not work all year for a lousy 4 weeks off. I needed to find a solution but had very little skills other than being a bit of a chatterbox.
