Here’s 5 things I’ve learned about grief in the last few years:
1. New grief can trigger old grief - just when you think you’re turning a corner, something happens and everything comes flooding back. In my case, it was when my grandma passed away in February 2023. Knowing it was her final days on earth and saying goodbye to her, reminded me of saying goodbye to my sister. I even asked my grandma to say hello to my sister during her transition if she meets her again - crazy I know!!
2. Time doesn’t heal you - People say time is a healer but my husband made a valid point. He lost his dad over 25 years ago and he said time doesn’t heal you, but over time you forget. You forget that initial heart wrenching pain, you learn to live this new life without them but any time there’s a milestone, you’ll continue to miss them.
3. Everyone experiences grief differently - no one’s journey is the same, some grieve quietly, some grieve through writing, some grieve publicly, everyone is different and entitled to grieve how they wish. It’s a personal journey.
4. Talking is therapy - I love talking about my sister. Just because she’s no longer here, that doesn’t mean I should forget her. I’ll talk to my friends about her, talk to her kids about her, talk to my mum about her. I could talk about her every day!! Sometimes people get uncomfortable mentioning someone that has died but I always remember the movie Coco. It’s a reminder of the power of family, how our bonds and connections with those who died never end and how our traditions and stories keep our loved ones alive.
5. It can break you or empower you - I love this quote and those that have read the About Us section on my website will know that I used my grief to start my own business. Grief can be an opportunity for self- growth and leaning, it teaches you about resilience and if you can get past that then anything is possible!
How can you enjoy life when the person you were enjoying it with is no longer here? Learning to live again without feeling guilty is hard when someone you love dies. After my sister died, I’d pretend she was on holiday or in hospital and that’s why I couldn’t see her. I would continue to send her emails, what’s app and Instagram messages but then it got to a point where I realised she was gone…. forever. That’s when I had to learn to live without feeling guilty. It’s still a work in progress, but anyone else ever felt like that?
It's been two years since I updated my blog, I didn't realise so much time had passed. Upon reflection, I can comfortably say these two years were spent on building myself up again. Navigating your way through grief isn't easy and it's takes time, lots of time, in my blog I talk about the coping strategies that helped me overcome some of the challenges with grief including depression and anxiety as well how sympathy gifts can have a profound impact on someone when they're dealing with a loss.
