What you should know about hair transplantation?

There are many reasons you might lose your hair. Sometimes hair loss is temporary, but it can be permanent. There are different treatments to manage hair loss, this includes:

• Medication
• Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection
• Hair transplant

Hair transplantation has proved to be the most effective treatment for severe hair loss with long-lasting results. However, this procedure is not suitable for everyone.

Who can have a hair transplant?

• People who've been losing their hair due to male or female pattern baldness for at least five years or more - beyond class 3 on the Norwood Scale.
• A hair transplant can be performed for any person with sufficient hair loss, good donor area hair, a healthy scalp, in good general health, and who has reasonable expectations.
• Men and women who've lost their hair due to trauma or burns.
• People who've lost their hair due to cosmetic procedures - for example, facelifts or neurosurgical scars.

Who is not suitable?

• People with D**A (diffuse patterned alopecia)
• Patients with unstable or insufficient hair loss.
• Those with a low hair density.
• Very young patients, patients unrealistic expectations, patients with with psychologic disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
• People with a diseased donor area - should be avoided whatever the reason may be and is a more common issue in women than men.
• Those who are medically unfit.

Types of hair transplant

There are 2 types of hair transplant.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)

• A thin strip of skin with hair is removed from the back of your head and divided into pieces, each containing 1 to 4 hairs (hair grafts).
• The grafts are then being transplanted into the balding area.
• This procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic.
• Scarring is more common in FUT hair transplants, so it's typically recommended for those who wear their hair in slightly longer styles.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE):

• Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, is a type of hair transplant procedure that involves first shaving the back of your head.
• During this procedure, the physician will extract individual hair follicles from the side and back of your scalp to transplant in the balding area.
• Although this is a lengthy procedure, due to the sheer number of follicles that are extracted, scarring is minimal and won't be noticeable at all once the hair has regrown.

Recovery

• Hair transplants usually take a day and normally there is no need to stay overnight.
• After 2 to 5 days: any bandages can usually be removed.
• After a few weeks: the transplanted hair will often fall out, and later start to grow back.
• Your new hair growth may be rough and uneven at first. Most patients reach full natural hair growth by around 10 months after their procedure.
• If a large area is being treated, you may need to have 2 or more sessions a few months apart.

Intermittent fasting, often abbreviated as IF, is when you alternate between periods of eating and fasting. It is a type of time-restricted diet in which you leave a long gap between meals, compressing food intake into a shorter period during the day. A typical gap without food is 16 hours.

IF is one of the world's most popular healthy diet options. It is used for weight loss, health and fitness programs.

One of the benefits of intermittent fasting is that it helps to keep insulin under control.
Insulin stimulates our muscles, fat and other cells to absorb glucose, which is then converted into fat. During fasting, the body releases less insulin. It allows the fat cells to release their stored sugar. When people have too much insulin, their cells start to resist the insulin and, in response, the body has to make more. Fasting gives the body a chance to rest and allows blood levels of insulin to drop significantly. Not only does this help burn fat, it can also lower your risk of diabetes.

Types of intermittent fasting:

• 16/8: It involves eating for 8 hours and fasting for 16 hours each day. It can be a first choice, simple fasting and less restrictive.
• Eat-Stop-Eat: This means fasting for 24 hours once or twice a week. Then for the remaining days of the week, use an appropriate amount of food.
• Fast 5: Fast 5 method involves 5 hours of eating and 19 hours of fasting.
• 5:2 diet: This method involves 5-day eating and 2-day fasting each week. This approach allows you to consume only 600 calories/day for men and 500 calories/day for women, approximately ¼ of your daily intake of calories.
• Alternate Day Fasting: This method, considered a comprehensive approach, allows you to eat every other day. For example, day 1: eat regular meals, day 2: fast, day 3: eat a regular meal, day 4: fast, and so on.

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted body fat. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. Liposuction removes fats and shapes these areas, improving their contours.

Liposuction is not a weight loss method or a weight loss alternative. If you're overweight, you're likely to lose more weight through diet and exercise or through bariatric procedures.

Benefits:

While liposuction is usually performed for cosmetic reasons, it is sometimes used to treat certain conditions such as:
• Lymphoedema - a long-term condition that causes swelling in the arms and legs.
• Gynecomastia - fat accumulation under a man's breasts.
• Lipoedema - a condition that causes an abnormal build-up of fat in the legs, buttocks and thighs.

Who is suitable for liposuction?

Talk to your doctor to determine if liposuction is the right option for you. Good candidates for liposuction include people who:
• are healthy and do not have life-threatening medical conditions that can impair healing or cause complications during or after the procedure.
• are within 30% of their ideal weight (adults)
• have firm and elastic skin.
• don't smoke.
• have a positive outlook and specific goals for body improvement.

Is liposuction safe?

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures and is generally considered safe. The procedure involves making a small incision in the skin. Using a thin, hollow tube they will break up the fat cells beneath the skin surface and remove them with a special suction or vacuum. When doing this procedure, tissues are normally not damaged and only the fat layer is affected.

As with all operations, there are risks involved in having liposuction. Although the risks are unlikely, it is important to weigh them up against the potential benefits of the surgery.

Risks:

• Haematoma (bleeding under the skin)
• Persistent numbness
• Development of blood cloths
• Infection
• Damage of internal organs
• Skin colour change in the area of treatment
• Anesthesia complications
• Nerve damage
• Numbness, bruising, pain, swelling, and
soreness
• Burns from equipment, such as ultrasound probes

How to minimise risks?

• Consult with a registered plastic surgeon so that you can make an informed decision as to whether the benefits outweigh the risks.
• Choose your doctor carefully.
• Be as healthy as possible. It is important to keep your weight steady with a good diet and regular exercise.
• You should avoid using aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for two weeks before the operation.
• Your doctor will ask you to have a complete blood count (CBC) test, other tests and diagnostics might be required.

Headache is a common condition that most
people will experience at least once in their live.
A headache is associated with pain or discomfort
in your head, forehead, face or neck area. There
are different types of headache, and it can be
characterised by pain type, severity, location, and
frequency.

According to the National Institute of
Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there are
more than 150 types of primary and secondary
headache disorders.

Types of headache

• Primary headache: A primary headache is a headache that occurs independently and is not caused by another medical condition. Migraine, cluster, and tension-type headaches are the most common types of primary headaches.
• Secondary headache: Secondary headache is when the head pain is being caused by another health issue. Tumor, head injuries, high blood pressure, fever, infection, or medication overuse can cause secondary headaches.

Migraine

Migraine is a genetically determined disorder
characterized by episodes of moderate-to-severe
headache. Usually, it is unilateral and is mainly
associated with nausea and light and sound
sensitivity. It is a common cause of disability and
loss of work. Migraine attacks are complex brain
events that unfold over hours to days in a
recurrent matter.

Tension-Type headache, sometimes called -
Stress headache

Tension-type headaches are the most common
type of headache, and they tend to be milder than
migraine. A tension headache is a mild to moderate pain or pressure around the forehead or the back of the head and neck. Sometimes it can feel like a clamp
or tight band around the head. Tension-type headaches are widespread, everyone will have a tension headache. Tension headaches are not always caused by stress or mental tension. There can be other triggers such as:
• tiredness and anxiety
• depression or being upset
• bright, noisy environments
• long periods of reading
• poor posture at work, at home, or when driving
• too much smoking or coffee

Who is affected?

Anyone can have a headache, including children,
adolescents, and adults. About 40% of people across the world have tension-type headaches, and about 10% have migraine headaches. Approximately 96% of people had a headache at least once.

How to diagnose a headache?

If you have headaches often or if they're very severe, the first thing to do is to visit your healthcare provider. It's important to diagnose type of headache a person has, so that a healthcare provider can prescribe you specific therapy to help you feel better.
During your headache evaluation, your doctor will
ask you about your headache history, including
• What the headaches feel like?
• How often the headaches happen?
• How long the headaches last?
• What is a trigger of your headaches?
• How much caffeine you drink daily?
• What your stress level is?

As part of the examination, your doctor will also
evaluate your symptoms and potential signs of
illness that might be causing the headache. Symptoms to be reviewed:
• Fever
• Infection
• High blood pressure
• Muscle weakness, numbness or tingling
• Excessive fatigue
• Balance problems
• Vision problems (blurry vision, double vision,
blind spots)
• Mental or personality changes
• Dizziness
• Nausea and vomiting
• etc.

Your doctor might ask you to take additional
examination such as:
• Head CT or MRI scan
• Blood pressure test
• EEG (electroencephalography)
• Duplex Ultrasound for neck and brain vessels.
• Sometimes more specific tests and examinations
can be necessary.

How headaches are treated?

There are different treatments available depending on the headache type. The first thing to do is to understand what are the triggers for your headache. Reducing those triggers can help you managing headache symptoms. For example, if stress is a trigger for your headache, you might need to change your lifestyle and learn stress management techniques. Remember that not every headache requires medication. The most common treatment are:
• Stress management
• Biofeedback
• Medications
• Treating the underlying medical condition

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in your
blood. Normally it is produced in the liver. Each
of us has cholesterol. Cholesterol is needed to
stay healthy and for our tissues to continue
working correctly. Every cell in our body uses it.
Part of cholesterol comes from the food that we
eat.

High cholesterol is found during blood tests
when you have too much cholesterol in your
blood. High cholesterol increases your risk of
heart or brain diseases such as heart attack and
stroke.

Types of cholesterol:

There are two main types of cholesterol. One is
good, and the other one is bad.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) - is also called
"good' cholesterol. HDL is like a vacuum cleaner for
cholesterol in the body. When it's at a normal
(healthy) level in the blood, it removes extra
cholesterol. The liver removes it from your body. It
means that this helps to reduce your risk of heart
disease, heart attack, or stroke.

Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) - is called "bad'
cholesterol. LDL, along with other substances, forms
plaques. Plaque formation is a condition called
atherosclerosis.

LDL or bad cholesterol:

If there is too much LDL cholesterol running
through your blood vessels, it can, over time, start
to build up on the sides of those blood vessels,
which is typically referred to as "plaque." Plaque
buildup in your blood vessels can eventually cause
those vessels to become narrower, and slow down
or block your blood flow to the heart. Blood carries oxygen to your heart, and when it's blocked, your heart may not be able to get enough oxygen. This can cause a heart attack. If a blood clot breaks away and blocks an artery in your brain or neck, you may have a stroke.

How to know my cholesterol level?

A blood test can measure your cholesterol levels,
including LDL and HDL. For people who are aged 20 or older:
• Younger adults should have the test every 5 years
• Men ages 45 to 65 and women ages 55 to 65
should have it every 1 to 2 years

If my cholesterol is high, how can I lower it?

Healthy lifestyle:
• Heart-healthy eating: A heart-healthy eating plan
to limit the number of fats that you eat.
• Weight Management: If you are overweight,
losing weight can help lower your cholesterol.
• Physical Activity: Everyone should be physically
active at least 30 min a day.

Drug Treatment:
If your lifestyle changes are not enough, you may
need to take medicines. Talk to your health care
provider about which one is right for you. The
most popular drugs to reduce cholesterol level are
statins.

What can I eat daily to reduce my cholesterol level?

• Limit foods with cholesterol: You should have
less than 200 mg of cholesterol a day. Cholesterol
is in foods of animal origin, such as liver and
other organ meats, egg yolks, shrimp, milk.
• Eat plenty of soluble fiber: Foods high in
soluble fiber help prevent your digestive tract
from absorbing cholesterol. Such foods are
oatmeal and oat bran, apples, bananas, oranges,
pears, and prunes, lentils, chickpeas, black-eyed
peas.
• Eat lots of fruits and vegetables: A diet rich in
fruits and vegetables can increase important
cholesterol-lowering compounds in your diet.
• Eat fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids:
These acids do not lower your LDL level, but they
actually may help raise your HDL level. Fish that
are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids include
salmon, tuna and mackerel.
• Limit alcohol

It is essential to get regular health checks and
check your cholesterol level.

Health checkup is a combination of medical diagnostic algorithms that help us understand our body condition and prevent possible diseases and
body changes. It is one of the main pillars of preventative medicine.

Just because you feel well doesn't always mean
that you're not at risk of a potential disease. Finding problems early means that you have better chances for effective treatment. Whilst a health check doesn't prevent you from developing a health problem, it can make you aware of areas that need attention.

For many people, health issues don't become apparent until there is a physical symptom. However, what if you could have prevented this?

Why regular health checks are important:

• It reduces your risk of getting sick
• Detects potentially life-threatening health
conditions or diseases early
• Increases chances for early treatment and cure
without complications
• Improves treatment outcomes
• Assesses your risk of future medical issues

Numerous tests can be carried out to check your
physical health and well-being. Some of the most
popular checks are:

• Health checks for adults - Blood tests, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, diabetes, heart
diseases, cancers etc.
• Health checks is for women - breast cancer
screening, cervical screening tests, STIs etc.
• Health checks for men - prostate cancer,
testicular examination etc.
• Health checks for older people - Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, blood pressure screening, bowel cancer screening, cholesterol screening, osteoporosis, diabetes screening.

Your GP may also recommend other tests based
on your family history, occupation, lifestyle, your
medical history or current symptoms.

Other recommended tests include but not limited
to are: eye tests, dental check, immunisation
checks, STIs.

There are also occupational and lifestyle related
health checks. For example, if you work with a
computer it might me a good idea to have a
regular eye test. If you are an athlete, you may
need to consider sports and an athlete health
assessment.
