Our largest organ, covering an average of 2 square metres and weighing 4.5-5kg in weight for the average adult, we can tell so much from a skin. Chronological ageing, sun worshipping, in/adequate sun protection, other lifestyle factors (smoking etc), ill health, scarring, visible skin conditions, problems, and many of us have skin goals that are individual and personal to just ourselves and our lives. Wrinkles, crows’ feet, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, tone and texture, acne, oily skins, psoriasis, eczema, dry and sensitive skins are just some examples of what people like to improve and care for.

I completed a Level 4 CIBTAC qualification in Aesthetic Practice, then added some other things on top and many other brands that I fully believe in and see the results that they get. I love cherry picking the ones important to me that are effective. I have a passion to continuously keep learning and growing and watching science advance. Likewise, as does helping others to achieve their skin goals and find their happy skins and results too. We have to look after our skins as it needs to look after us for our whole lives and is our outfit every single day.

Skin goals don’t come without effort and attention though. Motivation, commitment, consistency to be using and using and enjoying products and following the advice that will help reach those skin goals. 😎 But what is the difference between SPF30 and SPF50 anyway?⁠

Sunscreen plays an increasingly vital role in protecting the skin from harmful rays.⁠While it should already be a part of daily skin protection, UVB is going to be more noticeable as summer dawns on us.⁠
⁠
SPF is formulated specifically against UVB rays, and directly measure the protection it affords naked skin. We always recommend SPF50 or above, but why is that?⁠
⁠
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and measures the time it takes for skin to burn with a given product. If the sun emits 100 photons, then an SPF 15 blocks out 93 of them from entering the skin.⁠
⁠
The effectiveness of sunscreen increases incrementally at a certain point; no sunscreen can block out 100% of UV exposure (unless you're wearing a lead suit).⁠
⁠
While the protection against UV increases, SPF is not directly proportional. For example, an SPF 60 sunscreen is not twice as effective as an SPF 30. The difference between SPF 50 and SPF 30 is actually only 1% of protection.⁠
⁠
That being said, these numbers need to be expanded over a lifetime. After all, sun damage isn't a one-time event - it's accumulative. The difference of 1% every single time you apply or re-apply sunscreen over decades can mean the difference between healthy, vital skin, or sun damaged, actinic skin.⁠

‼ SUNBURN, REDDENING, PEELING AND EVEN TANNING OF THE SKIN IS CLEAR INDICATION OF SUN DAMAGE. OVER-EXPOSURE TO UVA AND UVB CAUSES DNA CELL DAMAGE THAT CAN LEAD TO ALL TYPES OF SKIN CANCER.

Cumulative sun exposure is the main cause of non-melanoma skin cancers, while sunburn plays a clear role in the development of melanoma.

Sunburn, particularly in childhood or adolescence can significantly increase your risk of developing melanoma. Skin damage builds up over time starting with your very first sunburn and the more you burn, the greater your risk of developing melanoma.

Sunburn (reddening of the skin) is a reaction to over-exposure to UV radiation. Our skin turns red within 2-6 hours of being burnt and continues to develop for the next 24 to 72 hours. The superficial layers of the skin release chemicals that cause our blood vessels to expand and leak fluid causing swelling, pain and redness. Without sun protection, UV radiation penetrates deep into the layers of the skin causing cumulative and irreparable damage to the skin cells.
