The early May Bank Holiday in 2022 saw a one day event organised by the Scammell Register in Watford to celebrate the centenary of Scammell Lorries Ltd. The star of the event was this lovely 3 speed 12 tonner tractor unit, which was new in 1928 to E.W.Rudd of East London.

We have received the sad news that Jack Kimp, long time secretary of the Scammell Register has passed away.

Jack was a stalwart of the register for many years and helped to build it into the thriving community it is today.

As well as taking the photographic display around the country, he was a fabulous source of knowledge on Scammell Lorries having worked with them for most of his career at Shell Mex and BP.

Jack worked tirelessly alongside others to generate funds for the Scammell Register by sourcing spares and promoting the sales of regalia.

The current display lorry was also a result of Jack’s input and has been a very valuable asset for the Scammell Register ever since.

Jack was also know for his sense of humour and of course, the occasional “apple juice”.

At this time, we do not have funeral details but these will be added when they are known.

Our thoughts are with Jack’s family and friends at this time.

Scammell Highwayman 1965 / leyland 690 power plus turbo was in recent months restored after being purchased by the Glynn family. They owned a very similar Highwayman some years ago and missed the presence of a Scammell in their yard so purchased a replacement.

Sadly Mr Dave Glynn passed away in January, his beloved Scammell took him on his final journey. ❤

Take a look 👀...

▪︎ Scammel Rigid 6-wheeler ▪︎

▪︎The Pioneer name was used only about the time it was fitted with the famous coffee pot radiator and appeared as such in adverts.

📝 Note that is has what appears to be a Harvey Frost 8 ton crane on the back.

▪︎Also note the starting handle and the shorter bonnet which indicates that is has the petrol engine and not the Gardner diesel engine. Early spoked wheels with the pneumatics on these late 20’s Scammell Pioneers.

▪︎The reason for this is this particular Scammell is probably fitted with the "Goodyear "K" rims and these were designed to fit the balloon tyres that were manufactured by same company.
The only way you could tell for sure is to examine the rim as Firestone also did a similar idea.
The rim would be held onto the spokes by wedges. There were conversion kits produced so you could change an original solid tyre to a "K rim" and a Balloon tyre. You would keep the original centre of factory fitted wheel and then fit the Goodyear conversion rim with the tyre. A very interesting concept that was produced by Goodyear.

Thank you to our member for sharing and Stuart Bird for elaborating. The vehicle itself is said to be from 1927, so that would make it a very early one.
The trade plate it carries is from at least May 1930 (trade plates don't date the vehicle).

We had another great response at this year's show.
In the left of the picture is Bill Bromidge our founder. The other gentleman are Frank and Terry who worked at the factory. Unfortunately Frank has broken his leg and could not make the show this year.

We all look forward to being reunited in 2023!

If you attended the show and took pictures, 📸
Feel free to message us as we would love to share them on the Scammell Register page!

Another Scammell Hunt...

📝

"Looking for some help if possible, my mum was having a clear out and came across some old pictures of my Papas working days. He worked with the South Of Scotland Electricity Board driving the spent Nuclear reactor rods at Hunterson power station. The vehicle was a Scammel registration FGA 713C. I have looked up the vehicle details and appears to be still alive somewhere. Being a bit of a petrol head I was just curious if you knew the whereabouts of this vehicle and the condition it is in thanks in advance."

"My Uncle bought and restored this Scammell in the 90s. The name on the front was “Bashful”. It was taken to many shows in the North West/North Wales, at which it won numerous trophies. It is a Scammell Pioneer Recovery, No 5800. It was sold around 2003/2004 to someone in Somerset (transported on a low loader from North Wales). I would love to see if we could track it down and see if it still exists. Thank you for your help."

~ Rundle Family ~

Scammell Pioneer SV2S heavy recovery
chassis No.3176
Owned by Jason Rundle

The early history of this pioneer is largely unknown, starting off somewhere in the MOD under the registration 59 RB 09, it was sold at auction in the late 1950s to JS Brewer & son, commercial recovery in Truro Cornwall and was registered LCV915F in the 1960s. It was the pride of their fleet.

In the later years of Brewers I worked as a mechanic in the workshop. I always admired and wish I’d owned the pioneer, but as time moved on and with only a handful of modifications to update the wrecker to the modern world and the removal of all the winch gear as payment to Cooks recovery (also of Cornwall) the company moved on and ceased trading in the early 1990s and the pioneer was sold.

In 1992 just two weeks after missing the chance to buy when it popped up at auction, I tracked down the buyer and convinced him to sell and I finally bought it.

The Pioneer after a few years of rallying and then being ignored again has been on and off restoration. Spending years searching for all the original parts that had been removed (most noticeably finding it’s original winch gear) and changing its reg to KSK573 the restoration over the past 10 years is now a fair way through completion.
