Red Robins Companions
Keeping your senior loved ones at home while providing help, companionship & reliving isolation
‘Earlier this year, scammers cleaned out my current account. They tried to clean out my savings account too.
‘I had a phone call from a gentleman who claimed to be from the Barclays Bank fraud department. He told me he was investigating fraud by members of the fraud team.
‘He said he needed my help to catch them, so immediately I wanted to help. But my suspicions were aroused. I said to him, ‘How do I know you are who you say you are?’ He told me he knew that I’d received a new bank card a few days before.
‘I decided to hang up and ring the number on the back of my card, using my landline this time. I was transferred to the same person, and I honestly believed I was talking to the real McCoy.
‘He asked me to transfer £2,500. I said I didn’t have that much, but I did have about £1,800. He told me that if Barclays’ fraud team rang me, I should tell them it was for my aunt. So that’s what I did.
‘I thought I was helping somebody catch a thief, but I was helping the thief. They shouldn’t have asked me to transfer money. But I wasn’t thinking. I was only thinking, ‘How can I help?’. They got me through my altruism.
'After about an hour, it occurred to me that there was something fishy. I felt vulnerable again, especially with my dementia.
'Things were going well, and I was doing things independently. Then suddenly I had to tell my wife I had cleared out the bank account. It was an awful feeling.'
"Music feeds your soul. And feeds your brain." 🧠🎶
Sue, who is married to our Ambassador Tony Christie gave us this quote when we filmed our latest campaign video, and we couldn't agree more.
We truly believe in the power of music when providing care for a loved one and helping to bring moments of joy and connection.
Sue recently did an interview where she spoke about Tony's dementia diagnosis, which you can read by clicking the link in our story.

It's time to keep cool and be sun-safe! ☀️

Launching our support for the Happiness Programme
Alzheimer’s Society’s Innovation team are partnering with Social-Ability to roll out the Happiness Programme to improve care for people living with dementia. The Happiness Programme uses interactive technology to develop activities and games for care home residents.
Initially, the partnership will begin in ten care homes nationwide and participants will be invited to test out new activities, co-designed with people living with dementia.
These activities utilise interactive light technology, enabling users to engage in physically and mentally engaging games like popping bubbles, playing the piano, colouring pictures, as well as other activities like bingo and quizzes.
We will focus on trialling how new games can encourage movement for residents.
Geraint was diagnosed with logopenic aphasia with Alzheimer’s disease in 2022. However, the difficult road to diagnosis started in March 2020, two years before Geraint was diagnosed. They were turned away from the Memory Clinic on the basis that Geraint, who is now 65, was too young.
But Alison knew Geraint was deteriorating and pushed for a new doctor and referral until they were eventually accepted at the Memory Clinic. In June 2022, Geraint deceived his diagnosis.
For him and his wife Alison, this diagnosis was devastating as they worried about what this meant and what the future would hold. We were there to support them through every next step.
‘Alzheimer’s Society is the best thing that could have happened to me. If I hadn’t got involved in those groups, I don’t know what would have happened to me.’ Said Geraint.
By meeting with an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Worker, Geraint and Alison had the practical information needed to take on the next steps, but also had the emotional support they were desperate for at that time.
