Here we go! As we prepare for the Whitley Bay Big Local makers market tomorrow we are admiring our new swirl bars which are a bigger version of our regular bars and are a very beautiful addition to your bathroom! Bubble bath bars! These are BIG! Enough for about eight baths. Honestly they were quite fiddly to make; the ‘dough’ isn’t the easiest to work with(!) These are for our forthcoming makers’ fair. I think they’re going to be a popular option on our stall but I’m not sure if they’re going to become a regular option in our online shop. What do you think?

Two beginnings. This photo shows the beginning of a batch of bubble bath, as I mix the ingredients. It’s also how the entire process begins: product testing.
I’m making a test-batch today because one of our suppliers is closing. This is difficult for us because we have spent a long time carefully choosing a supplier that fits our criteria for quality, ethics, price and compliance with cosmetics laws.
The ingredient in question is our foaming agent, SLSA (sodium lauryl sulfoacetate). Through past experience, involving trial and error, we know that there are two types of SLSA: ‘course’ and ‘fine’. We need course. We once mistakenly bought fine and it did not work at all with our recipe.
The trouble we’re having at the moment is that most suppliers only seem to offer ‘SLSA’ without stating whether it’s course or fine. Even when shown photos of the stuff (it’s a white powder) I am unable to distinguish one from the other. Our best option seemed to be to purchase a small amount and give it a try. Best case scenario is that it works beautifully…. Otherwise we have to repeat the process with other suppliers until we find the right one, which obviously costs us time and money. So, I’m very much hoping that this test batch foams up wonderfully in my bath tonight!
