FUTURE OF GODSHILL POST OFFICE AND STORE

The situation at Godshill shop and post office is that at present it is run by Island Community Ventures Ltd, a trading arm of the charity Community Action Isle of Wight.

Due to the difficult trading environment that many rural village shops and post offices have, which have seen many shut both up and down the country and on the Island, the shop tends to lose money each year. This tends to be in the region of an average annual loss of £15,000.

In the past the Godshill shop has only survived because Island Community Ventures Ltd has supported operational losses from profits made from other charitable trading ventures and because Community Action Isle of Wight has actively tried to support the maintenance of such rural community services.

However, in the difficult environment in which we all find ourselves, with a squeeze both on all trading and much charitable work, it can no longer cover such losses.

To protect both the Godshill Post Office service and other outreach services that are also provided, in particularly in Totland, a potential way forward has been suggested which sees the risk of losses shared between Godshill Parish, Totland Parish and Island Community Ventures Ltd.

The proposal would be that the two parish councils and Island Community Ventures Ltd share the potential loss by Godshill Parish and Totland Parish agreeing to provide an annual grant to Island Community Ventures Ltd up to a maximum of £5,000 per parish council.

If the shop breaks even then no grant funding would be required. Island Community Ventures is not providing the service to try and make a profit, just to break even and support the community service. If the trading loss was lower then a proportionate amount would be paid as a grant. For example if a loss of £10,000 was incurred then each parish would be asked for £3,333 for that year and Island Community Ventures would contribute £3,333.

If the losses were higher than £15,000 the amount requested from the parish councils would still be no higher than £5,000 each. Island Community Ventures would cover this higher loss.

Without this support Island Community Ventures would have to give notice on the shop and our post office contract and the post office would therefore close in June.

Without this kind of hybrid approach it is difficult to see how the post office service can continue in many rural areas as a small shop and post office simply don’t generate sufficient footfall and have sufficient profit margins on the items/services they sell to make it add up.

Based on the current known information, moving the post office to a different location in Godshill would result in a minimum of £18,000 in set up costs and would very likely result in Post Office Ltd reducing the level of remuneration it pays, making any future provision even less financially viable.

The position at Rookley is also difficult due to the potential development of the site and therefore its future is also uncertain.

GODSHILL PARISH COUNCIL WISHES TO CONSULT RESIDENTS AS A MATTER OF URGENCY ON THE ABOVE PROPOSAL WHICH INVOLVES AN ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION OF £5,000 TOWARDS THE RUNNING COSTS OF THE POST OFFICE/STORE. IT IS PROPOSED TO FUND THE CONTRIBUTION FROM EXISTING RESERVES AND THERE WOULD THEREFORE BE NO IMPACT ON THE COUNCIL’S PRECEPT

Changes to COVID-19 guidance have come into force today Sunday 20 December. These will affect us all over the festive season.

📌Portsmouth, Havant and Gosport along with London and other parts of the South East have moved into stricter Tier 4 restrictions. People in these areas must not leave or be outside their home except for specific purposes. They cannot form a Christmas bubble.

📌Tier 4 restrictions mean that Islanders should not travel to Portsmouth, Havant and Gosport or any other Tier 4 area unless travelling for essential reasons, such as work, education, caring for vulnerable people and to attend medical/hospital appointments.

📌Across Tiers 1 to 3, Christmas bubbles can now meet on Christmas Day only. The five day Christmas bubble period has been cancelled.

For more information from UK government 👉https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

For local information 👉 https://keeptheislandsafe.org/christmas-2020

This festive season please keep it small, keep it short, keep it local and remember and ventilate.

18/12/2020

The announcement that the Island will remain in Tier 1 is great news for our community. It shows how well we have worked together to reduce our infection rate to one of the lowest in the country.

From Saturday, Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant and much of the South East will be in Tier 3. Please remember that we should all avoid travelling into Tier 3 areas, unless for exempt reasons like work or health care.

If you were planning a trip to Portsmouth for Christmas shopping, this should now be avoided. We have fantastic local businesses who have worked hard to keep everything they do COVID-safe, please shop local this festive season.

Following the guidelines now will help to keep the Island safe into 2021. We are working with colleagues from our partner agencies and asking everyone to play their part by sticking to the rules.

Remember
🖐hands
😷face
↔️space
💨ventilate

Thank you for playing your part to keep the Island safe.

We’ve launched a new initiative to help families and individuals who are facing hardship because of COVID-19 this winter.

Our ‘connect4communities’ programme is appealing to community, voluntary and charity partners to apply for grants to support families with children in need over the winter.

The grants scheme builds on the first phase of support, announced last week, that provides food vouchers for families in need via schools.

See link in comments for details of how community, voluntary and charity partners can apply.

Further support for families and individuals is available through the Help Through Crisis team at Citizens Advice Isle of Wight who can help you access support. Link in comments.

This programme has been funded by £456,845 Winter Grant Scheme, awarded to the council by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

There have been quite a few reports of scams reaching Island residents this week.

Be wary of emails and texts from delivery companies including Royal Mail there have been reports of a scam email saying that delivery of a parcel was unsuccessful and asking you to click on a link to reschedule. Remember NEVER click on links in messages and always check the sender email address to see if it is legitimate.

Action Fraud is warning people selling items online to be on the lookout for criminals sending fake PayPal emails. Criminals have been targeting people selling items online, by sending them emails purporting to be from PayPal. The emails trick victims into believing they have received payment for the items they’re selling. Typically, after receiving these emails, victims will ship the item to the criminal. This leaves them at a further disadvantage having not received any payment for the item and also no longer having it.

A message purporting to be Apple is being received in text and email form. It says that you cant access your account and Apple services and that you need to verify your account. Do not click on the links in the message and always check the sender email address to see if it legitimate.

Reports of phone calls purporting to be Sky technical. If in doubt check with your provider.

Scams aren’t going away – they are constantly evolving and we have to work hard to keep ourselves safe.

🦠Be prepared for self-isolation.

Self-isolation is when you must stay at home because you have or might have COVID-19 (coronavirus).

It is different from lockdown because you can't leave your home except to go out to your garden.

What to do if you have to self-isolate:

✅If you cannot go out to work and cannot work from home, you can get an isolation note to send to your employer to prove you can't work. You do not need to contact your GP.
Do this online 👉https://111.nhs.uk/isolation-note/

✅Keep up regular exercise at home or garden.

✅Walking your dog.
You cannot leave your home to walk your dog. You will need to ask others to assist you.

✅Make plans for food shopping and medicines.
If you require help buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication ask friends or relatives to help. Consider local suppliers for home delivery.

✅Don't forget the Isle of Wight Coronavirus helpline.
If you're self isolating and don't have a local network of friends, family or neighbours to support you, please call:
☎️ 01983 823600
9am - 5pm Monday to Friday, 9am - 1pm Saturday.

Coronavirus testing on the Isle of Wight.

Isle of Wight Council have been in touch with the government and told them to act swiftly to help prevent the spread of on the Isle of Wight following reports of people travelling on and off the Island for a COVID-19 test.

If you need to get a test for because you have symptoms, call 119 or go online at nhs.uk/coronavirus.

☎️Please remember - 119 not 111
❌Please don't travel to the mainland for a test. Please only accept a test at the Isle of Wight test centre. You can also request a postal test.

Our director of public health is Simon Bryant said;
"Appointments for tests are made available on a daily basis; the evening before for the following morning and the morning before for later in the day.
Do not think that because there is no availability when you call or go online that means no availability at all for the foreseeable future. So please keep trying to get the test you need."

Remember, please only book a test if you have any of the symptoms of coronavirus.

👃 A loss of taste and smell

We have a couple of unusual scams for you this week –

An Island resident had a phone call from a woman trying to sell "a disc that goes in the loft to protect you from COVID" A man called round the following day and then told her that the disc costs £9500! She asked him to leave, which he did.

Someone else told us they'd had a text saying that they have been selected for Jury service and to click on the link to proceed - luckily they spotted that this is a scam.

Any unusual call or text out of the blue is likely to be a scam. Do not engage and for further advice on current scams and staying safe go to www.iwasp.org.uk

⭐️⭐️SPEEDWATCH-VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ⭐️⭐️

We are pleased to announce that we have just relaunched our first Community Speedwatch group in Newport. Community Speedwatch enables members of the community to become police support volunteers and take action against speeding on the roads of concern within their area.

Volunteers use equipment that can monitor the speed of passing traffic and then record the details, later adding them to a database. Vehicle checks are then undertaken by the police and letters are then sent to the registered keepers advising them of their speed and reminding them of why it is a community concern.

If you are concerned about speeding vehicles in your area and would like to set up a scheme, or would like to volunteer for an existing scheme, please visit our website:
https://www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/careers/careers/police-support-volunteers/community-speedwatch/ for more information.

Well done and thank you Isle of Wight. 🙌

We’re delighted that the Island has risen to 36th out of 345 other UK areas for household waste that is recycled and composted.
This is up from 111th in the UK in 2012/13.

The stats show that in 2018/19 the Island recycled 55.7% compared to 46.21% in 2012/13.

The Isle of Wight Council, in partnership with Amey, carried out a recycling and waste composition study by reviewing the contents of waste from houses in selected roads during summer and winter in 2019/20. This was pre-coronavirus.

The study also found ways we could continue to improve by:

♻️Recycling more - 60% of material in the average general waste bin on the Island could have been recycled, reused or composted, including paper/card, plastics, metals and glass.

♻️Separating food waste from general waste. The equivalent of 1 in 4 of the contents of general waste sacks was food wasted and could have been composted. This could be turned into compost to generate electricity, helping the environment and reducing landfill.

♻️If we put everything that could be recycled in recycling bins/green sacks and paper/card boxes/blue sacks, and use the weekly food waste collection, we would have a recycling rate of well over 70%..and we'd be top in the country.

Thank you Isle of Wight. We've done well - now lets do great!

⬇️Please download the correct action card from our website. See link in comments.

Please note:

❗️Action cards have been developed to be used across the country. It is vital you update your organisation's action card with the right contact details for the Isle of Wight.

We’ve had a number of reports in recent weeks relating to dangerous driving and speeding on the Isle of Wight.

You have told us about your experiences, and we are grateful to you for taking the time to do that. We encourage you to please keep feeding this information into us.

Over this weekend (4th & 5th July), our RP/ARV team on the Island were joined by Roads Policing Officers from the mainland to carry out some work to address this.

The majority of incidents reported to us relate to Military Road and the surrounding West Wight area, where we know high performance cars and motorbikes like to race up and down the road.

Our weekend operation resulted in 52 tickets being issued to motorists in this area for a number of different offences including speeding, driving with exhaust defects, and driving with number plate defects.

In addition to this, two people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving offences, and officers also conducted a few S23 drug searches of vehicles, as well as dealing with a serious collision on Cowes Road in Newport.

This weekend we also engaged with the various biking groups that were out and about so we could educate riders.

It is important that we listen to the concerns of our communities and take action, and education is a key part of this.

We remind all Islanders to please take care on the roads and look after one another.
