Being blessed with life means that we also have to cope with others dying and manage the associated emotions of grief. We already teach children about so many feelings - what happiness, sadness and anger are, how they make us feel and how to manage these em

* Just to say how much I enjoyed this morning's training and thank you for sharing the power point and links. The only other point I will make is that the morning went far too quickly and I would have been happy for it to have been a day's training! Hopefully I will be able to join you again for training in the future.

* I always enjoy listening and learning from you. I am sure that our paths will cross again in the future as I will keep an eye on any other training that I feel would benefit me, (to be fair, they all would but I mustn't push my luck)!

* Sarah, it was a great course and you’re very knowledgeable, we’ve already fed back how useful it was to SLT and we’re going to do a short overview with our staff soon. Thank you!

Be fantastic - skip the plastic!

BackPocket Teacher is all about eco-friendly packaging, using recycled materials wherever possible.

Approximately 36 per cent of all plastics produced are used in packaging, including single-use plastic products for food and beverage containers, approximately 85 per cent of which ends up in landfills or as unregulated waste.

Even small adjustments in how we use - and most importantly reuse - plastics can make a significant, positive impact on the future of our planet.

If in doubt, leave plastic out.

After returning from a recent trip to Spain, I found myself asking questions about the concept of community and what that really means.

Essentially, community is a sense of belonging and connection between individuals who share common interests, values, or experiences. It's about fostering relationships, support, and cooperation within a group.

This includes mutual support, shared goals or interests, open communication, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging. Communities often provide a space for individuals to feel understood, valued, and supported.

Being a part of a community involves actively engaging with others, contributing to the group's goals or activities, and building meaningful relationships. It means having a sense of belonging and responsibility towards the community and its members.

In the UK, communities often revolve around local neighbourhoods, towns, or cities. Often the focus is on smaller, tight-knit groups. In contrast, Spanish communities can extend beyond immediate neighbourhoods to encompass broader social circles, including extended family members and even entire regions.

And in Spain, communities tend to place a strong emphasis on social interactions and gatherings, such as festivals, fiestas, and communal meals. These events provide opportunities for people to come together, strengthen bonds, and celebrate shared traditions. In the UK, while community events also occur, there may be a greater reliance on organised groups or clubs for social interaction.

In the special needs/learning disability community in Britain, individuals, families, caregivers, and professionals come together to support and advocate for those with special needs, helping to elevate their voices and needs. This involves accessing resources, sharing experiences, and promoting inclusivity and awareness.

From what I saw in a small village in Andalusia, people with learning disabilities were 100% included in their community. In fact, there was no need to talk about inclusion and access – they just were active and valued members of the community.

From using the shops, cafes and going shopping, stopping and engaging with neighbours and others in the village (including me, a tourist) and taking the bus to the next town. All interactions were equal, all members of the community were equal. This has made a lasting impression on me and what a joy it was to be a part of this community, if only for a holiday.

It’s so important for all schools to have a bereavement policy.

A school or nursery with an appropriate bereavement policy is prepared and has plans in place to deal with death, grief, and bereavement.
