The fibre in carrots can help keep blood sugar levels under control. And they're loaded with vitamin A and beta-carotene, which there's evidence to suggest can lower your diabetes risk. They can strengthen your bones. Carrots have calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for bone health.

When Boeing Co. needed to test out in-flight wireless signals on full planes, they couldn't ask humans to sit motionless for days at a time while they conducted experiments.

So they found an unusual substitute for people: the potato. Turns out that human beings have many more similarities to potatoes than you'd think.

According to an Associated Press report, engineers at the Chicago-based airline manufacturer used sacks of potatoes instead of passengers as they tried to find weak spots in in-flight wireless signals.

Many more planes are now outfitted with wireless capability, but the signals can be spotty 35,000 feet up in the air. The engineers needed full planes to get accurate results during signal testing and come up with ways to fine-tune the signals.

"That's where potatoes come into the picture," Boeing spokesman Adam Tischler told the AP.

Because of their water content and chemistry, potatoes absorb and reflect radio wave signals the same way humans do, the AP reports. [ ]

Did You Know??

The zucchini, courgette or baby marrow is a summer squash, a vining herbaceous plant whose fruit are harvested when their immature seeds and epicarp are still soft and edible. It is closely related, but not identical, to the marrow; its fruit may be called marrow when mature.

Furthermore, courgette nutrition, especially golden skin varieties, is rich in flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants such as carotenes, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These compounds help scavenge harmful oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the body that play a role in aging and various disease processes.

What are the top 5 health benefits of blueberries?

1. May be protective
Blueberries contain one of the highest antioxidant levels amongst commonly consumed fruit and vegetables. This is typically referred to as the ORAC score. They are extremely rich in naturally occurring plant compounds called phytochemicals such as ellagic acid and anthocyanidins. These phytochemicals are responsible for the blue, indigo and red colouring of the berry.

The phytochemicals in blueberries have been extensively researched for their protective properties, which helps the body combat a long list of diseases.

2. May help prevent heart disease
Research has shown that anthocyanidins, which are found in berry fruits, may support the cardiovascular system. They appear to do this by supporting the health of blood vessels and reducing the arterial stiffness which is associated with ageing.

3. May help regulate blood sugar
Blueberries are both low in sugar and a good source of fibre, as a result they have a low Glycaemic Index (GI). This, together with their high flavonoid content, may help improve insulin sensitivity which is important for managing blood sugar levels.

4. May help maintain eye health
Including blueberries regularly in your diet may improve vision and guard against age-related macular degeneration. This is thought to be thanks to the improved blood and oxygen flow to the eyes and the antioxidant protection which may help reduce the likelihood of cataract and macular degeneration.

5. May alleviate gastrointestinal issues and UTIs
Traditional medicine suggests blueberries may be a useful remedy for both gastrointestinal conditions and urinary tract infections. [ BBC Good Food ]

Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a vine species of passion flower native to southern Brazil through Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is cultivated commercially in tropical and subtropical areas for its sweet, seedy fruit.

The fruit is a pepo, a type of berry, round to oval, either yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The fruit is both eaten and juiced, the juice often added to other fruit juices to enhance aroma. [ ]

In the 1800's people had quite particular ideas about the correct colours of food and red was absolutely not one of those colours. The daring red tomato was likely first introduced to North America by Spanish colonists in the 17th century. By the 19th century, some intrepid gardeners grew ornamental tomatoes because they thought they looked interesting. But few thought to actually eat them. That attitude began to shift in 1834, when Dr. John Cook Bennett, a physician and amateur botanist, made a provocative announcement in the press: Tomatoes had medicinal properties. While there’s no evidence that Bennett conducted scientific research himself, he was a great promoter of other people’s work (though he often neglected to credit them), and he’d visited European hospitals and colleges where doctors recommended tomatoes to patients. He claimed that eating tomatoes prevented cholera and treated diarrhea, headaches, and dyspepsia. (atlasobscura.com)
