We’re having the best time at Sylvan Lore this holiday! This experienced sylvan has used a wide range of tools and skills to make this fantastic boat 🚤.

We love to see how our older sylvans grow into such fantastic woodland experts. Great axe work skills and such perseverance to create such a beauty.

Photos from Sylvan Lore's post 14/06/2024

Being able to use a carving axe safely really saves time when wanting to remove a lot of material quickly. I was so impressed with the perseverance and determination shown by all of these sylvans when mastering this skill. You can see the concentration on each of their faces, brilliant work!

At the end of each club, we always hold an archery competition. We are always so impressed with everyone that chooses to take part and the archery skills on display this time around were amazing. Here are our champion archers from the half term club. We're really proud of them all.

12/06/2024

Apologies to all the parents who had to put up with the very loud sycamore whistles we made last week. Really impressed with the whittling skills demonstrated. Not to mention how tricky it is to remove the sycamore bark without splitting it. We have lots of sycamore on this site, and with nothing more than a small knife, they were able to make these excellent 'parent irritation devices.'

Our Summer Clubs are filling up fast, with some days fully booked and more than half with only one or two places left. If you would like to see our dates, please follow this link...

Another one of our amazingly experienced Sylvans making bread dough and enjoying the finished tasty snack. We mixed in some wild garlic during our Easter cub and developed some of our foraging skills. There will be lots more cooking during our May half term club at Brompton and Kirkby and Great Broughton Primary schools.

After a busy Easter, we are ready to start our Sylvan Saturday club again. Sessions begin on the 20th of April 2024, running from 10:00am till 12:00pm. We have places for a maximum of 15 children and focus on a range of green woodworking skills, forest crafts, and survival skills. We have lots of opportunities to learn about biodiversity, sustainability and conservation. If you think your child would enjoy two hours in a beautiful woodland, learning skills and making friends, then drop me a message for more information.

If you select the block of six sessions for this half term, it works out at £9 for two hours. This includes snacks and all craft materials. They will bring home everything they make and keep all of the crafts at no extra cost.

Working outdoors every day has always been the dream! I'm so lucky to have a job I love. So on a rare evening off, what better way to relax is there than catching up with an old friend in the woods?

-2 degrees, so the old under blanket came out for the hammock and we weren't going to starve with the amount of food he brought.

There is no better place than round a fire, in the woods, with good company (and good food).

Advanced skills on show at Barn House woods! Our Sylvans work hard to learn how to use a range of tools, build a variety of shelters and identify the resources they need from the natural world around them.
We're always so proud of their progress.

We still have a few places left for our Easter holiday clubs. Follow the link for more info and booking.

Here are our Easter dates! We are looking forward to running six days of adventures during the Easter Holidays.

Sylvan Lore’s mission is to reconnect young people with nature and the outdoors through
the development of traditional woodland skills and knowledge. We believe feeling
comfortable and at home in the outdoors increases confidence and promotes well-being.

At Sylvan Lore your child will...

• Spend seven hours in the outdoors each day
• Learn how to use tools, build dens, light fires, make water safe to drink, cook food and identify trees and plants
• Work as part of a team to overcome challenges and solve problems
• Make new friends and join a club of young nature lovers with members in many other schools
• Learn how to shoot a bow during our archery sessions
• Become a custodian of the natural world
• Have fun each day and sleep well each night

We'll be at...

Barn House Woods (Great Busby)
26th and 27th of March

Brompton Community Primary School
2nd and 3rd of April

Kirkby and Great Broughton Primary School
4th and 5th April

Some brilliant camp fire cooking from our half term holiday club. We cooked pancakes with a valentine theme, bannock bread and popcorn. Learning how to build a cooking fire, how to cook on embers rather than flames, and how not to burn everything is quite a skill! I'm always so impressed with how safe our young sylvans are when supervised around fire.

We love archery at Sylvan Lore! The disciplines involved are so good for young people. We take so much pleasure in watching our archers improve through their perseverance, hitting those golds and smashing their PBs.

Archery is always on offer during our holiday clubs and, as the weather gets a little warmer, as part of our after-school clubs too.

Here's to many more golds!

"Is the club canceled?" A child asked today. "The field is flooded! It's like a lake."

"Well, we had better get out there and get in it then," was the response.

The weather rarely stops us at Sylvan Lore. Mostly, it just gives us more opportunities to learn, explore, and have fun. Some impromptu raft building and 'How well do my wellies work?' experiments were the order of the day.

We still have a few places left on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th of February for our half-term club and a couple of Saturday club places too. If you were hoping to come along on Monday 12th Feb, I'll be happy to put you down on our waiting list if you let me know.

One of our youngest Sylvans showing great skill while carving an animal head. Who would have thought KS1 children would be capable of creating such amazing woodland crafts? We believe in high expectations at Sylvan Lore and we were not surprised at all. Never underestimate young sylvans!

Our Sylvan Saturday Club has started again at Barn House Woods. It was an amazing first session with plenty of popcorn, s'mores and hot chocolate to keep everyone warm and full of energy. Along with carving, fire lighting, den building and fox hole digging, I was really excited to find a number of tawny owl pellets. We'll be picking these apart next week and rebuilding some little skeletons. I can't wait!

We have room for a couple more children to join us each week, so if you are interested, please follow this link for more info...
