Is it time for a community run waste recycling centre?

Is it time for a community run recycling centre? If anyone would like to join me looking at a community lead scheme (non political group )so we can ensure it stays open and recycle what the community feels is important to us then please contact me
Hampshire County Council is launching a public consultation on future services between
Monday 8th January to 31st March 2024. The consultation outlines proposals to meet a £132m budget shortfall by April 2025 whilst continuing to keep our most vulnerable residents safe.

It is really important to hear your views on the range of proposals and particularly those most likely to affect us here in Alresford such as the future of our local waste recycling centre. Would you support a reduction in opening hours or days for example to help keep this service open? Is it time for a community run recycling centre? Many residents know I fought hard for pedestrian access and I am a regular user of the service . I believe in positive action, I know we have many residents with fabulous ideas on this and like me, value this site. So let's get together and see what we could potentially do with some teamwork and community spirit. Whilst I don’t know what the conclusion will be regarding the consultation, whilst I will certainly be feeding back my thoughts on this, I do believe in being prepared and would be interested to know if any other residents feel the same about discussing the opportunity for our community and how this would potentially be possible.

Please take a look at the consultation when it opened on Monday 8th January and let me know your thoughts and suggestions.

You will be able to comment on the proposals here www.hants.gov.uk/future-services-consultation

Or email me on Cllr Fiona Isaacs on [email protected] and I will make sure your views are heard.

Wishing everyone a very happy New Year.

Wishing everyone a festive Christmas and a happy new year.

**What to do with festive waste🌟**

Let's make this festive season merry AND eco-friendly! 🌍

Did you know that household waste levels skyrocket by about 10% in January? That's a whole lot of extra waste! In the UK alone, we use a staggering 300,000 tonnes of cardboard during the festive season. 🎄 If laid side by side, it could cover the distance between London and Lapland a hundred times over! 🎁

A little mindfulness goes a long way. 🌱 "Buying only what you need reduces waste and helps the environment. Let's resist the urge to overindulge and be mindful of our purchases. 🛍️ Every small action counts in reducing our carbon footprint!

🍽️ Did you know that the amount of potatoes wasted each year could make roasties for the entire UK for 48 years? 😱 Let's be food waste warriors with these tips:

Use a portion planner and shopping list.
Ask guests to bring reusable containers for leftovers.
Let people serve themselves to avoid excess.

🎁 Sustainable gifting is a win-win! Check out the Green Gift Guide for ideas. 🌿 When it comes to outfits, get creative:

DIY festive jumpers from old pullovers.
Choose second-hand party outfits from charity shops.
Rent outfits to slay in style sustainably!

♻️ Recycling tips:

Book a slot at Hampshire's Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Real trees can be composted or shredded into ProGrow.
Check the wrapping paper scrunch test for recyclability.
Glass bottles and jars go to bottle banks or kerbside collections.
Recycle broken Christmas lights and electricals at designated drop-off points.

📱 Use the OurHants app to book recycling center visits.

Let's make this festive season about giving back to the planet!

Please note the change of dates for the waste collection over Christmas and New Year. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Hooray 🎉

From 1 January 2024, residents using our Household Waste Recycling Centres will no longer be charged for disposing of their DIY waste – in line with the Government policy changes. Find out more about the changes in our latest news item https://www.hants.gov.uk/News/20231112HWRCDIYcharges

The County Council’s Executive Lead Member for Universal Services, Councillor Nick Adams-King, said: “The removal of charges at HWRCs will be welcome news for those who are undertaking DIY projects as it reduces the cost burden in these challenging times. This change follows Government legislation which now prohibits local authorities from charging for smaller amounts of DIY waste generated from household projects. Although fees will be lifted for certain volumes of this material, broadly equal to that of an average car boot, we will continue to monitor sites to prevent unscrupulous commercial operators taking advantage of a taxpayer funded service.”

UPDATE. - A 31 driving issues
Following all my emails to HCC and Cllr Nick Adams-King who leads on highways here is the latest.

Traffic team have visited the site and noted areas where they believe positive improvements can be made.

Rodfield Lane appears to be a key location for vehicles entering the A31 incorrectly. To mitigate this a directional sign will be placed at the southern end of the junction, along with signage reminding drivers that there is a dual carriageway ahead. Whilst not legally essential, a ‘No Entry’ roadmarking will also be added.

Replacement ‘No Entry’ signs will also be added on the backs of the westbound ‘Layby Closed’ signs, with a repair ordered for the sign that was damaged in a recent collision.

Thanks to everyone that has contacted me by every means including messenger. Hopefully this should help.
Regards
Fiona

Some useful links for help. Take care it was dreadful last night on the roads.

With the Met Office issuing a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall and winds over the weekend of 27 to 29 October, and several flood alerts from the Environment Agency across the south of the county, please take care and follow the Environment Agency for further alerts and information, as well as tuning into local radio for traffic and travel updates.

Take care when out and about. Our highways teams are ready and have additional resources on standby to clear excess water from the highways and any falling tree debris. Information about reporting flooding on Hampshire’s road network can be found here: https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance/roadproblems/flooding

See this safety advice: https://www.rlss.org.uk/water-safety-in-a-flood AND https://smartdriving.co.uk/Driving/Driving_emergencies/Floods.htm

Busy morning helping the Village hall committee clear the carpark area. Well done everyone, it looks very good. 😊

24/10/2023

Good morning all,

Please can we ask you not to leave bags of clothes outside of the clothing bank in the Car Park at Arlebury park.

Our British weather of course at this time of year, is very wet and as you can imagine, we now have bags of wet clothes & donations.

Thank you

After being targeted for supporting residents with antisocial behaviour issues I was delighted we could arrange the group community safety engagement with our local police, neighbourhood services and community safety teams. 3 hours in the rain but hugely popular. Another one in the new year.

We need your help!

Every year the Alresford Pigs Association and the Alresford Chamber of Commerce work together to plan and deliver the ‘Christmas Tree Project’ that brightens up our whole town for the December festivities!

The trees are put up by a team of volunteers and this year we need a few more pairs of hands to make this possible. If you can help us on either/both these days – please do email us [email protected]

Trees go up: Saturday 25th Nov
Take-down: Sunday 7th Jan

All the profits from selling these trees to local businesses, organisations and private residents - then go to support local charitable causes and events, that benefit our whole community.

We all love how beautiful our town looks every year, so please do help, if you can! Thank you

CONFIRMATION- No on-street parking charges
As part of some on-going projects Cllr Nick Adams-King was updating me this weekend. I can also confirm to those residents who asked that there are no plans to introduce on-street parking charges in Alresford. Putting those rumours to bed hopefully.

24/09/2023

Catching up on some community issues whilst at the briciante market this morning. Digby has wonderful patience 😃.

20/09/2023

We are currently at the scene of a collision on the A34 northbound, close to the M3 junction, involving a HGV.

The road is closed in both directions and a diversion is in place. We expect the road to be closed for the majority of the day and ask road users to please avoid the area wherever possible and allow extra time for your journey.

The driver of the HGV has sustained an injury to his arm and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

We apologise for any disruption while we deal with this incident and ensure that the road is safely cleared, and we thank you for your patience.

20/09/2023

I attended the business and housing policy meeting last night. It’s a sobering reminder of how much it now costs to park in Wi******er. I know many businesses are really struggling esp on Sundays as a result.

02/09/2023

Enjoy ! 😃

SHOW DAY!

A reminder of our top tips:

🚜 Plan your journey, allow plenty of time. All car parking is FREE and there is a shuttle bus from Alresford too. Check our website for details.

💰 Bring CASH. There are no ATMs at the showground and the rural location means that connections for card payments will be slow at times.

💡 It's a good idea to bring a PICNIC BLANKET if you have a young family, this will allow you to find a shady spot away from crowds to eat lunch if you need a bit of quiet time.

🐎 Remember that all seating at the GRANDSTAND is free. There is no need to book. Simply find a space and enjoy the displays and parades.

📞Phone signal is usually good at the site, but remember that large crowds can affect this and it may be tricky to communicate with friends and family. We recommend making plans in advance to meet others where possible.

See you soon!
