The last legal COVID-19 protective measure – the wearing of face coverings – will convert into guidance on Monday 18 April. While this means the general public will no longer be required to wear face coverings in certain indoor spaces and on public transport, NHS Grampian is strongly encouraging everyone to continue to do so. We are also reminding local people that fluid repellent surgical masks will still be in use in hospitals and healthcare buildings, for patients, visitors, and staff alike.
Susan Webb, Director of Public Health, said: “I want to emphasise continued use of face coverings is still strongly recommended on public health grounds. There are more than 14,500 people in Grampian who were on the shielding list at the beginning of the pandemic. Based on national research, we believe as many as 5,000 of them are still minimising their contact with others, due to concerns about COVID-19. Discussions with vulnerable communities have highlighted anxieties about face mask usage by the general population time and again.”
Rose was among those asked to shield. She said: “I think everyone should continue to wear a face mask where they feel the need and not be judged by others. I do think recently as a shielder, I have accepted COVID-19 will potentially always be with us. I would urge the general public to take everyone’s situation into consideration and respect their decisions to wear a mask or still take extra precautions once restrictions are removed.”
Head of Health Intelligence, Jillian Evans, added: “Local and national data indicates cases of COVID-19 will continue to be a challenge well into May. Over the last few weeks, we, along with all health boards, have seen an increase in the number of people in hospital with COVID-19. This virus is still circulating freely. Omicron, as the current dominant variant, may not be leading to serious illness in most cases, but it does still cause disruption to work life, school life, and just life in general. Choosing to wear a face covering is an act of kindness for your local community. My mask protects you; your mask protects me.”
Susan Webb added: “As a health board, we support the Distance Aware scheme. This provides lanyards and pin badges to those who wish to continue with physical distancing. I would encourage everyone, from individuals to businesses, to be on the lookout for these and to respect the wishes of people wearing them.”
Hospitals, health centres, and care homes have been following national infection prevention and control guidance throughout the pandemic, and the use of fluid repellent surgical masks continues to be the default for staff, patients, and visitors.

BUCKSBURN MEDICAL PRACTICE NOTICE TO PATIENTS
The Practice is currently experiencing an unusually high rate of staff absence which is affecting our telephone service.
We appreciate and apologise for the inconvenience and stress this may cause our patients, however, we must ask that the abusive comments, shouting, and swearing at our Reception Staff via telephone, in person, and on social media must stop.
Our Staff are simply carrying out instructions and protocols laid down by the Practice, while working under difficult conditions.
They are also human beings with feelings and the Practice will not tolerate the abuse currently being levelled at them by some patients. This is affecting their ability to carry out their work and causing upset and distress.
The Practice operates a Zero Tolerance Policy and we will not hesitate to consider removal of a patient from our list or, in certain cases, involving the Police, if this abusive behaviour continues.
The Practice takes any concerns regarding its service seriously. Therefore, If anyone has concerns about their care we would be grateful if they could raise these with us directly so that we can investigate fully.
We are currently looking at a review of our service and details will be coming out soon.
Thank you for your co-operation.
