This page is to record the lost, or nearly lost, signage painted onto Portsmouth properties in the early 20th century. Thanks
Anyone is free to post photos, but please give a location as to where the signage was found.
This will probably be of interest to readers here
18 rare pictures of Portsmouth shops you probably forgot existed Here are some rare photos of lost shops and their owners in times gone by in Portsmouth.
I'm not sure how I missed this one as its so local to me. At the corner of Langley and Binsteed Roads. There doesn't seem to have been a shop there so I'm wondering if it related to the off licence that used to be on the other side of Langley Road (see an earlier post)?
Manners Road, Fratton. I thought I had done this earlier, but it must have slipped through the net
Spice Island in Old Portsmouth, formerly the Union Tavern
Corner of Ripley Grove and Baffins Road. Pretty sure I can make out TOOLS on the bottom of the right hand panel. So maybe an old hardware shop?
Spotted this lovely floor signage in tesserae at the junction of London Road and Stubbington Road today. I believe AW White later became White & Co Removals? At the time of installation though I think they supplied various vehicles to hire such as "Handsome & Roomy Carriages for weddings, Balls, Garden Parties etc, Broughams, Landaus and Other Open & Closed Carriages". Quote from a Science Museum leaflet. Sorry no date
Apologies for last post. I run several pages, and didn't notice that one was on the wrong one till it was too late!
Such a waste of a fine building. I believe my father in law used to dance here way back when. The Ballroom in North End.
Edit: my mistake, I think the ballroom was a little further down and is now an indian/nursing home.
U NEED US on the corner of Arundel and Slindon Street. Still empty after all this time!
Not strictly ghost signage, but this disused postbox in the wall near St Mary's Hospital caught my eye today
At the corner of Langley Road an New Road. Another lost corner shop.
This might look like a plain wall, but trust me, there is lettering under there. Its pretty hard to make out, but if the light is right you can start to make some of the shapes out. It's on the opposite wall to the Nestle Milk one by the school on Copnor Road, so I suspect its going to something similar. Probably best to go and try to decipher it yourselves!
How to find 39 of the best ghost signs across Portsmouth KEEP your eyes peeled in Portsmouth and you may find faded adverts for the city’s businesses of old, from ironmongers to hairdressers.
Bit tricky to get a good shot of this one. Maypole were ci******es I think? This is on the back wall of the Indian take away on Kingston Road. The shot is taken from New Road.
Great to see so many new likes on here. Thanks for joining me 😁 Hopefully I'll be out and about again this weekend hunting out more signs.
On a wall overlooking Copnor Primary School. NESTLES MILK
Be fun to try and decipher this. I think it's been overpainted at least twice. On Copnor road
Almost invisible now! Anyone knows what was here on Farlington Road I'd be interested to know.
Drayton Road, North End
SWS Static Water Supply. Unusual to have the smaller directions still visible
On the corner of Shearer Road and Hampshire Street
South of Devonshire Avenue on Winter Road
At the corner Oxford and Goodwood Roads
Not too visible, but on the wall of the Stag Inn, corner of Lynn Road and New Road
Old off licence at the corner of Malta an Langley Roads. So many of the corners near us seems to have been shops. Or pubs!
On the corner of Lynn and Cyprus Roads. Soon to be covered by weatherboarding
Above Lynn Motors, at the junction of Lynn and New Road
