Leader's appeal to continue support to the vulnerable 10/01/2024

It is absolutely vital that the government does not withdraw the Household Support Fund.

This fund is a safety net for families and individuals facing the greatest hardship and councils like Bury simply do not have the money to plug the gap if Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt pull the plug.

Leader's appeal to continue support to the vulnerable The borough has had millions of pounds from central government to use on support for its residents since the scheme started more than two years ago.

🚨 Brandlesholme Road Safety update 🚨

We are continuing to campaign for improved road safety in Brandlesholme. We have had some success with new road markings and a vehicle activated speed sign at Springside View.

But we know that more is needed.

That’s why we’re supporting local residents in their campaign to secure a new pedestrian crossing on Brandlesholme Road at Springside View.

Unfortunately, the council’s highways budget does not allow for a crossing at this location. There are other pots of funding that could be explored, such as for active travel, and we’re continuing to push the council to think creatively about how we can improve road safety in a time of constrained budgets.

We are also still pushing the Council on the promised Woodbank School Street. This would make a huge difference to school pick up and drop offs at this school, making it safer for everyone.

Martin recently raised both these issues at a council meeting before Christmas 👇

Labour in Elton is on your side all year round.

Eight drivers 'caught speeding' during police operation 18/12/2023

Great to see this targeted action on speeding in Brandlesholme by GMP Bury North.

We consistently raise this issue with local policing teams and continue to support residents to campaign for better road safety in the area.

Have your say on Burrs heritage 👉 https://uk.surveymonkey.com/r/BurrsHeritageSurvey

Friends of Burrs Country Park and Bury Council have been working together on plans to improve our wonderful park.

A new survey has been launched to find out which of the six heritage features that are due to be upgraded should be upgraded first.

The survey also asks what kind of community activities could be offered in the park to help people learn more about the history of the site.

Have your say at the link and let us know what you want to see for your park 👉 https://uk.surveymonkey.com/r/BurrsHeritageSurvey

We were out and about on Saturday as we are every weekend - good weather and bad (cold this time anyway) ❄️

Good to chat to residents around Robert Street and Spencer Street with James Frith. Big takeaway was the parking issues on Spencer Street. We’ll be taking this up with the council - there was a plan long ago to provide more parking spaces, let’s see if it’s time to resurrect this idea!

05/12/2023

We’ve been down at The Lamppost - Burrs Country Park for Friends of Burrs Country Park tonight.

🙌 Congrats to the new committee that’s been elected - we look forward to working with you!

🦇 We heard a fascinating presentation from the South Lancashire Bat Group. Great to find out more about the bats all around the world and right here in Burrs and the Kirklees Valley.

♻️ A useful update on the new recycling bins that have been installed around the park. Sounds like the new bins have been a real success!

🛶 Brilliant to hear about a new canoe club that’s been set up out of the Burrs.

🎅 And finally, the Friends of Burrs 2024 Calendar is on sale now! It’s a great way to support the Friends of and get a lovely keepsake or Christmas present.

What do you think of this?

Do you think the council should be able to enforce rules around yellow boxes at junctions?

Take the survey at the link below and have your say 👇

Have your say on yellow box enforcement at 5 sites in the Bury borough.

We plan to apply to government for powers to enforce moving traffic offences, to improve roads for all users and allow Greater Manchester Police to focus on other priorities.

We know we’ve been a bit quiet on here over summer but rest assured we’ve been as busy as ever!

We’ve been doing weekly street surgeries across the ward, dealing with plenty of case work as always, and we did a ward walk with the council chief executive a couple of weeks ago where we showed her the best of Elton as well as highlighted where we think things can improve.

This weekend we were out on Garside Hey Road and Holme Avenue. Thanks to those residents who took the time to have a chat.

Well done Councillor Charlotte Morris. One proud Labour team here in Elton 🌹

Sorry I’ve been a little quiet after the election. Honestly, I just needed some time to process and decompress!

I cannot fully express my gratitude to the people of Elton for once again putting your trust in me to serve you as your councillor.

I’ve now faced three elections in five years. In 2019, I was elected by just 16 votes. In 2022, it was 18 votes. And this year I won by 137 votes.

Thank you to every single person who has voted for me, it truly means the world.

While it was my name on the ballot paper, elections are always a team effort.

A huge thanks to everyone who helped me during this campaign and all year round. Our Labour family is strong in Bury and I’m grateful for the invaluable support of friends.

Commiserations to my Conservative opponent Andrew Luxton. It was a challenging campaign but generally as good natured as it can be in the circumstances!

While I might not have been Facebook over the past week or so, I have been straight back to the hard work for Elton. Case work doesn’t stop for elections!

With a four year term, what I’m most excited about is getting the chance to develop some longer term plans. We have some fantastic individuals and community groups in Elton that have bold ambitions for our area, so I can’t wait to get stuck back in working hard with you and for you to make our area even better.

Finally, I’m looking forward to working as part of a Labour administration at the town hall. With an increased Labour majority on the council, it’s clear that the people of Bury have rejected the negative campaigning of local Tories and the failure of the Conservative government nationally.

Labour is on your side.

We’re here for you in Bury and at the next General Election you’ll have the opportunity to let us show you what we can do in government.

It was a little wet to say the least!

Had a fab meeting this morning with Martin down at the Burrs.

Graham from the council and Martin from Proffitts (who are working with the council) talked us through the draft Burrs strategy and kindly showed us some of the improvement works that have been carried out already.

Thanks to over £700,000 investment by Bury Council between 2022 and 2024, the following upgrades and additions have either already been made or will be in the coming year:

🛝 New trim trail adventure play equipment

🌳 Tree and wildflower planting

🥾 Footpath improvements

🚻 New public toilets and a disabled changing facility

🌊 Flood mitigation around The Lamppost - Burrs Country Park

It was also exciting to hear about progression plans at the cafe and for a possible cadet facility at the park. Watch this space!

📢 Last night Labour councillors passed a budget for Bury for 2023-24 which supports those most in need and invests in our towns and communities

Despite a dozen years of austerity and soaring inflation due to the economic chaos caused by the Tories, we’re using what money we do have wisely. Here’s how 👇

👉 Over £100 million up to 2026 to continue our ambitious regeneration plans across the borough to protect and create jobs and grow our local economy

👉 More than £27 million from 2023 to 2026 to resurface dozens of local roads, replace our ageing streetlights, improve our cycle ways and install new road safety schemes to make our roads safer for all users

👉 An extra £3.5 million on top of the £5.5 million we committed in 2021 to meet the increase in the Real Living Wage, putting more money into the pockets of over 5,000 local caters and other low paid workers

👉 £1.3 million in 2023 to support disabled residents with new facilities and adaptations

👉 £18 million to build a new primary special school for children with special educational needs in Bury

👉 A new £100,000 Council Tax Support Fund providing £100 off council tax to 1,000 local households not eligible for other benefits who are struggling

👉 £151,000 for community and councillor grants to support local organisations working hard to improve neighbourhoods and support vulnerable residents across our borough

👉 £87,000 to freeze rents for our market traders

👉 £70,000 for a Veterans Support Fund and a Children in Care and Care Leaver Support Fund to help some of our most vulnerable residents through the cost of living crisis

👉 An extra £125,000 for our tree maintenance team to help us tackle more tree issues, a key concern of local residents

Bury Tories voted AGAINST Labour’s budget amendment and defended their government despite its ruthless cuts to local services.

Labour in Bury are on your side 🌹

We were out in force across Elton over the weekend.

We knocked hundreds of doors and spoke to lots of residents about local issues and national politics.

It’s clear there’s no love lost for the current Conservative government, but it was also nice to get some positive feedback from residents on our work locally.

22/02/2023

Good to see this from The Labour Party.

A Labour government will deliver 13,000 additional neighbourhood officers and PCSOs, paid for by making police procurement more efficient.

Town centres will get new police patrols and every local neighbourhood will have a mandatory antisocial behaviour police lead.

We know from working with the local policing team in Elton that Greater Manchester Police, and hard working community officers, do what they can but with fewer officers than 10 years ago, it makes the job very hard indeed.

20/02/2023

Thanks to The Sunnywood Project for inviting us along to their opening on Friday.

We’re so pleased that they’re making their permanent home in the fantastic Burrs Country Park.

If you don’t already, give them a follow on here to keep up to date with all their brilliant activities.

Good to visit Woodbank Primary School today to discuss local issues with headteacher Mrs Macadam.

Martin and I dropped into Woodbank Primary School today to meet with headteacher Mrs Macadam. Thanks for having us Kelly and the much needed brew!

Lots to discuss in particular on school parking and pick up / drop offs. Hopefully more to come on that so watch this space …

Let’s take on the challenge to waste less food 12/02/2023

♻️ IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT BROWN BIN CADDY LINERS ♻️

This has come up a lot recently, whether on the doorstep or people getting in touch direct.

You should have received, or should be about to receive, a leaflet containing tips on food recycling alongside a roll of green compostable food caddy liners.

Bury Council has taken the difficult decision to provide one roll of caddy liners per household per year, rather than on demand as they previously were. After the initial roll out between now and March, they will be delivered annually in December.

This change is because of council funding cuts. In 2023/24 Bury Council must find £31 million more savings on top of the £110 million savings already made since 2010. It currently costs more than £210,000 per year to supply liners, almost double the £109,000 budget.

We know some people will be disappointed but the council’s challenging financial situation - which let’s be clear is as a result of over a decade of austerity and ongoing national government underfunding - means hard choices have to be made. This change to recycling caddy liners will help to protect other frontline council services. If other political parties in Bury argue that we should retain the current policy, then I’d love to hear what they would cut instead.

That being said, we know it’s difficult times for many with ongoing inflation, energy price rises and mortgage hikes, we don’t want to see council cuts but we have no choice.

We’ll be working with local foodbanks and we’ll be making regular donations of caddy liners along with food and other essential supplies so that no one in Elton goes without.

We hope people can understand why this decision has been made and let’s continue to recycle so that the council can save money and we help our environment.

Let’s take on the challenge to waste less food A leaflet championing the need to waste less food will be delivered to residents across the borough of Bury from today, along with a roll of 52 compostable...

Fantastic to see! 🎉

Great to see the new Vehicle Activated Sign now installed on Brandlesholme Road 🙌

We know that road safety is a big concern fro residents in Brandlesholme and across Elton. This new sign is just one of a number of measures myself and Martin, as your Elton Action Team, have secured over recent months.

✅ New speed sign on Brandlesholme Road

✅ New road markings on Brandlesholme Road

✅ Renewed road markings on Brandlesholme Road

✅ New pedestrian crossing on Tottington Road

✅ Proactive speed enforcement activity with the local policing team

We know there’s more to do, but lots of progress made. And we’ll keep pushing to make Elton’s roads safer for all.
