Another day and another birds nest, that’s 3 this week!!

Make sure you have a cowl or guard fitted to stop Jackdaws nesting in your flue.

Jackdaws breeding season is from early April until June

Next week is CO awareness week, make sure you regularly check your carbon monoxide alarm.
It could help save your life!!

I got called out today for multi fuel stove that was not venting properly, with smoke filling the room.

It had been installed over two years ago and had never been swept. The customer had never been told to removed the baffle plate to clear any debris and to check that the bottom of the flue was clear.

The soot and ash on the on baffle plate was over an inch thick and the flue almost completely blocked.

These are basis checks that you should be carrying out every few months when your stove is in use, this will help your stove burn and vent properly.

Please share this post with your friends and family that have stoves.
Many thanks
Mark

Swept the chimney for a gas fire this week, I was really surprised at the amount of debris and remains behind the fire. This will have taken years to build up, if you look closely you can see the layers in the debris.
If your having issues with a gas or solid fuel appliance, ensure you call a suitable qualified person to resolve the issue.

An interesting morning yesterday, a customer had been complaining of flies coming out of her chimney flue into the house.

I didn’t have to look far for the culprit, a young seagull chick had fallen down the flue and had died there.

Make sure that your pots are capped if it’s a disused flue, or if it has a gas or coal/ wood fire it has a required cowl or guard fitted.

Please also make sure it’s the right cowl, I’ve removed two spigot bonnet caps off chimneys that had a working open fire and a stove fitted, they should only be fitted to disused chimneys (see photo 3).

If you chimney or stove require sweeping we are taking bookings and have the detailed steps we take regarding Covid 19 on our website, for all sweeps carried out.

Federal bird guard fitted in Abergele this after, after removing the birds nest. Also a chimney pot to replace.
A great view of the castle before the rain started.

Another jackdaws nest removed, now that the fledglings have flown the nest it’s a good time to get the nests removed.
Once removed make sure you fit a cap, cowl or bird guard to save them coming back next year.
If you haven’t got a cowl or bird guard on a live flue it is recommended that you have one fitted.

In early May I went to see a customer regarding Jackdaws possible nesting in here chimney, there was one egg.
So today after discussing with the customer if the birds were still around, I went and had a look and the fledging has departed. The chimney has been capped.
Now is a good time to make sure that our little feathered friends don’t breed in our chimneys or on our roofs.
If you need help resolving any of these issues please call Mark on 07771 501 569.

Birds nest again today, it’s a good idea to have a cowl on your chimney pot, it saves having to pay me or someone else to remove this. And there’s still more to come out yet.

This might seem a little bit long winded, if you have an open fire or stove, or know someone that has please read this and share with your friends and family.

Yesterday I went to sweep a chimney, for a really nice guy. In conversation it transpires that he had his multi fuel stove fitted some 5 years ago and last had it swept 20 months ago, and uses his fire everyday during the burning season.

That was the first red flag for me, as it was over the required sweeping frequency, the second one came when he told me that the last chimney sweep had condemned the liner, as it was starting to fall apart. That really started to set my alarm bells ringing.

It was no surprise that after sweeping the flue, I had to issue a warning notice stating that the appliance couldn’t be used due to the flue starting to disintegrate and that a new liner was required.
This is something that I don’t like doing, but is something we have to do to keep individuals and families safe.

If you use an open fire or stove please ensure that you have it regularly maintained, if any professional gives you advice don’t ignore it, get a second opinion straight away and get the issue rectified.

Please like and share if you think this article is helpful.

Today I cleaned a chimney for a lovely couple, who had not had their chimney swept for a few years.
I took at least the equivalent of 25 litres of soot from the chimney, when I’d finished the chimney was drawing properly and ready to use again; and would not be filling the room full of smoke as it did when they tried to use it on Christmas Day.

WHY DO I NEED TO HAVE MY CHIMNEY / FLUE SWEPT?

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also increase the efficiency of some appliances.

HOW OFTEN DOES MY CHIMNEY NEED SWEEPING?

Frequency will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment. The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only:-

Smokeless fuel: At least once a year
Wood: Quarterly when in use
Bituminous coal: Quarterly when in use
Oil: Once a year
Gas: Once a year

Think about when you last had your chimney swept, how often you use your fire/ appliance.
Does it need sweeping? Don’t leave it until it becomes a problem, ensure you have it regularly serviced.

Also ensure that you have a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with your fire, and test it regularly to ensure it’s working, and still in date.
Thanks
