We have been holding some preschool piano lessons for ages 3-4 and I'm sure you may wonder how a preschooler can possibly play the piano?!

I thought that too many years ago. Toddlers certainly cannot sit at the piano bench for 30 minutes, play songs and concentrate for a long period of time... this does come with age. Starting children under the age of 5 prepares them for more formal piano lessons and teaches them the skills they need to become future musicians.
Here are just a few benefits:

1. They learn how to sit properly at the piano&hand position
2. They can learn the music alphabet forwards and backwards.
3. They learn to quickly identify their fingers by number
4.They can learn to draw their treble&bass clefs
5. They learn the names of the piano keys
6.Piano lessons can help children begin to build concentration&focus
7. They become creative musicians by improvising
8. They play along with the teacher&develop a steady beat
9.They can identify high&low sounds
10.They learn the names&how to identify basic rhythm values
11.How to create loud&soft sounds on the piano keys
12. Tempo-including tempo marks&listening to fast&slow music
13. Listening to great music-young children accept&love the music we expose them to.

So you see, there are so many benefits of starting lessons early& with a parent there to take part&help as they are crucial to the parent-teacher-child triangle! Parents can continue their practice&learning at home. In our 30 minute sessions we learn through play, use the floor piano and coloured spots to find patterns, alphabet games with cups&manipulatives, percussion instruments to play rhythms, we listen to lots of music played by myself or online, we move to music with scarves, we play simple songs on the black or white keys, we sing, we compose&improvise and above all the children have fun! After a year or two with preschool piano with parents, they are ready to move onto group sessions with our Little keynotes for ages 4-6

Preschool lessons with a parent run on Wednesdays at 2pm, Saturday at 1.15& soon Saturday at 10am&the first 2 lessons are completely free to see if they enjoy the lessons.😀😀😀😀

The children are learning about different note values, how long we hold them for and their musical names.They all enjoy this part of the lesson (think it may be getting the chance to use whiteboards and pens!)We also created our own rhythms to clap each other.

Two years ago today I decided to get a group of my 1-1 students together for a group lesson where they could perform a few of their favourite songs to each other/mini recital and play music games together and they loved it.
That was the start of group lessons and the best decision I made.
Two years later and we now have 12 groups coming in for lessons every week ranging from ages 3-11 ❤️❤️

An early morning start today with lessons at the local school. A flask of coffee and croissants were needed!! Oh and a new set up in the library 🙂

End of term madness 🌞🌞🌞
The children were beyond excited as I pulled out beach balls from my bin bag.Each beach ball had a different note value and they played around with them and as the music stopped they had to match up with another and say how long the note is held for😊😊

My youngest class worked so well as a team.They worked on the music alphabet,built a piano on the floor with the laminated,finding all the Cs on the piano, colouring and playing Moo cows!🐮🐮🐮

You immerse them in music and music-making.

Today's group lesson is focusing on using the sustain pedal.Each keyboard has been treated to its own pedal and now I have an upright piano,we will be exploring the inside of the piano and what happens inside when each pedal is pressed.
I love looking inside a piano,it's like a piece of art!It looks so impressive I might keep it like this for a while🎹☺️🎹☺️
We will be preparing a rote/memory song which calls for plenty of pedalling.Growing up in my own piano lessons,I was never taught about the pedals with my first teacher and had to wait over 7 years to be "allowed" to add the pedal to my music when it appeared in an exam book...the pedal was almost forbidden until I was older but I really feel it is such a huge part of the piano and should be explored and used as we often refer to it as the "magic button" of a piano.

The books have arrived for our summer classes and 32 children have signed up to take part (thankfully not at once!!) Balloons have also been ordered for games!

They have all worked hard and have begun their second book and already have a good knowledge of where the music alphabet is on the piano,can follow the music,know their finger numbers and observe the rhythms in their songs .Well done girls!!! 😃🎉👏🎊🎈
