- About the author -

Antony Peck grew up in a Christian and musical family in south west London, where as a boy he sang treble, and later tenor in a church choir.

He was educated at Latymer Upper School, from where he went to do National Service in the Royal Navy, spending 18 months on the aircraft carrier HMS Centaur, on the lower deck. During this time, thanks to the Navy, he saw much of the world, and of course, a lot of the sea.

After this, he went as a Choral Exhibitioner to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. There, he sang Evensong every day, and heard a great many sermons. He read Modern Languages and graduated with an M.A. in French and German. Having trained as a teacher of languages, he taught French and German at the Priory School for Boys in Shrewsbury.

After serving an apprenticeship in teaching, he obtained a post for a year in France as a Languages Assistant. On returning to the Priory School, he developed his own teaching materials for German, based on the newly-introduced audio-visual course materials for French. When the Nuffield Foundation established its Language Teaching Materials Project, he became Director of the German Section at York University. The teaching materials were published after an exhaustive testing period in schools.

As a lecturer in the Language Teaching Centre, he trained graduate language teachers and founded a unit devoted to the development of language teaching materials for German. The Goethe Institute (the German Cultural Institute) established a branch in York University to collaborate in this work. As a Senior Lecturer by this time, he was able to promote close co-operation between the Goethe Institute and local schools.

He lectured for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). His special interest is in German art of the early 20th century, notably that of Emil Nolde.

He continues his love for singing, writing and gardening. He has two sons and four grandchildren. His books include Mastering German, Macmillan; Language Teachers at Work, Prentice Hall; Kontakte, BBC; Saint Everilda of Poppeleton, Quacks Books. His next book is entitled Friend or Foe.
