A reminder that domestic abuse isn't always just physical ☹️

David Barrett was jailed for more than two years last week. He denied attacking his partner but was caught red handed after she managed to secretly record some of the abuse.

In one video it was made clear Barrett controlled the woman’s finances and, in another, Barrett could be heard telling her that no-one would come and save her because nobody cared about her 😡

Victims of domestic abuse can also suffer from the threat and fear of injury, daily intimidation and having every aspect of their life monitored and controlled. Coercive control is a criminal offence, and we take all reports of it very seriously.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a priority area for the force and we have delivered a long-term behaviour change campaign and several education projects.

This includes training CCTV operators, taxi drivers, door staff and businesses in spotting the signs of predatory behaviour.

Clare Wood was a mum, a daughter and, just 36 years old when she was murdered.

Today, marks the 15th anniversary of when Clare was found dead at her home.
She had been strangled and set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, George Appleton.

Afterwards, it emerged Appleton had a history of violence against women and was known to search for women on online dating websites and Facebook. He had previously served prison sentences for stalking, harassing and abusing women.

Clare’s distraught family believed she would never have got involved with Appleton if she knew his violent history. So Clare’s father, the late Michael Brown, campaigned tirelessly for a new law to allow women and men to find out if their partner has an abusive past.

As a result of that campaign, a Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, known as Clare’s Law, was rolled out across the country and has been used by thousands.
