Judge Miss JW Robbins

Best Dog, Best of Breed: Henryk Jackwingowy Grod at Springhaze (Imp POL)
Reserve Dog: Springhaze On Fire
Best Bitch, Best Opp S*x of Breed: Doris Eki Balarda (imp POL)
Reserve Bitch: Springhaze Walking on Air
Best Special Beginner: Springhaze Quartz Crystal

I last judged the breed in 2019 awarding CACIBS in Norway and although the breed is not numerically large they have a large personality which I love. So I must thank the Committee of Windsor Dog Show for the appointment and opportunity to judge the breed for the first time in the UK.
I found the breed was on the whole of very good type with both the Best of S*x of excellent grading. The overall breed hallmarks of being a calm, muscular heavy b***d tricolour working dog, come through. The heavy bone, good feet, balanced free striding movement on profile was seen on all specimens, and the correct tri colour and correct white marking was present on all. One issue I did see a lot was far too close in rear movement, something that needs to be monitored by breeders. All the exhibits demonstrated excellent temperament.

Particularly I wish to thank the Great Swiss Mtg Dog exhibitors for their pleasant and courteous manner in the ring, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with you and your exhibits.

Class 144 Junior Dog (1/0)
Mr & Mrs Brailey, Henriyk Jackwingowy Grod at Springhaze (Imp POL),
14 month old male of excellent type. Self assured and good natured dog, still to reach full maturity, carrying a lot of quality. An excellent head with correct width of skull to muzzle. A flat broad skull with correct almond eye and high set ear , correct scissor bite and tight lips. Topline of muzzle straight, a slight furrow up between eyes. The chest well developed, oval shaped ribcage, the back firm enough, a broad not too short in loin. Tail coming off croup, carried correctly. Excellent bone and feet, standing straight forward. The hind was well angled and with strong hock. This was the best moving exhibit in the breed, with the most excellent rear movement free striding, and parallel hock, not crossing or close behind. Correct coat texture and clear tri colour. Handler presented dog well. This was my Best dog, and Best of Breed.

Class 145 Post Graduate Dog (1/0)
Mr Vandrill & Mrs Lees Common, Vandervalley and After All. Just under three year old male, of very good type. Head correct in length and breadth, with correct eye shape and excellent ear set. Has correct heavy bone, correct feet shape and good pad. This dog was mature and having an excellent chest and oval ribcage. Strong back and adequate angulations. Tail set on off croup and carried correctly. Front movement was good free striding, however could I prefer a cleaner hind movement, he was moving with hocks too close and on this he lacked what the best dog had.

Class 146 Open Dog (1/0)
Mr D band Mrs F Langley, Springhaze On Fire. Just on six year old male, of excellent type. Correct width and breadth of skull to muzzle, a dark eye of correct almond shape, a high set ear. Excellent scissor bite, tight dark lips, Strong neck and correct topline. Excellent strong bone and feet. Correct colouring with white running down into chest. Has adequate angulations and correct tail from croup. Was lacking a little condition in body and coat, changing due to season, but did spoil his overall presentation. Movement in front was correct, however his rear was too close moving away.

Class 147 Special Beginner (Both S*xes) (1/0)
Mr & Mrs Gray, Springhaze Quartz Crystal. Very good type, five and half year old female. Very good temperament and handled well. Presentation excellent. A good head with correct width and breadth, loss of pigment (somewhat to age) in lips, but holding scissor bite. Has a correct eye and ear set adding to a feminine expression. A very good front assembly, good chest and ribcage, and strong neck into shoulder. Standing a little high in rear and could do with some improvement in rear angle. Tail coming off croup correctly, has excellent bone and feet. Movement behind was somewhat too close, and on first attempt was not free striding, however as the handler presented through multiple classes the movement become balance and active.

Class 149 Post Graduate Bitch (3/0)
1st Ms Pringle, Doris Eki Balarda (imp POL). Just turned two years, mature Excellent type, feminine with substance. A self confident and good natured female. She has a correct head width and breadth, flat skulll and furrow extending up, muzzle topline level. Scissor bite, good pigmentation, a dark almond eye and correct high set ear. She has excellent bone and feet. Feet pointing forward, her movement was the best of the females. She has a strong neck, good topline and carried her tail correctly set from a broad croup. Her colour was correct tri colour, coat was correct.
2nd Mrs Timms, Springhaze Walking on Air, two year old female of very good type. Was less developed in the head than the 1st place winner, and her lighter eye colour did spoil her expression, however she is feminine with strong bone and good feet. She has a correct high set ear, correct tri colour. the topline was good, though she was spolit being a little over weight in my opinion. She has an excellent chet, oval ribs, good balanced angulation, and her movement was free striding, but could be less close behind. Presentation and handled excellent.
3rd Mr & Mrs Gray, Springhaze Quartz Crystal.

Class 150 Open Bitch (1/0)
Mr & Mrs Gray, Springhaze Quartz Crystal. Very good type, five and half year old female. Very good temperament and handled well. Presentation excellent. A good head with correct width and breadth, loss of pigment (somewhat to age) in lips, but holding scissor bite. Has a correct eye and ear set adding to a feminine expression. A very good front assembly, good chest and ribcage, and strong neck into shoulder. Standing a little hind in rump, and could do with some improvement in rear angle. Tail coming off croup correctly, has excellent bone and feet. Movement behind was somewhat too close, and on first attempt was not free striding, however as the handler presented through multiple classes the movement become balance and active.

BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme Examination

Crufts, National Exhibition Centre, Marston Green

Thursday 9th March 2023 – Sunday 12th March 2023

The Kennel Club is pleased to offer BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examinations at Crufts 2023 for just £30.00 per dog (at a reduced rate to the normal group pricing of £45).

How to book your BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examination

We will have 60 appointments each day in two sessions, a morning session (from 10:00am to 13:00pm) and an afternoon session (from 14:00pm to 17:00pm). You can book an appointment directly through our website here. Shortly after making payment, you will receive an email confirming your appointment.

Appointments will be booked on a first come, first served basis so book now to avoid disappointment!

What the assessment will involve

The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examination is a clinical eye examination which will be carried out by Professor Peter Bedford BVetMed PhD DVOphthal DipECVO FHEA FRCVS (subject to alteration). The ophthalmologist will first administer drops into your dog’s eyes to dilate the pupils and ensure they stay wide during the examination. Please note, you must arrive at the vet centre 20 minutes prior to your appointment for the administration of the eye drops and the completion of the owner’s section of the form. Once the drops have taken effect, the vet will then examine your dog’s eyes with an ophthalmoscope in a dark room. The examination will identify inherited and non-inherited eye conditions in your dog and the results of the examination will be recorded on a certificate. More information on eye testing can be found on The Kennel Club website and the BVA website.

You will not be present with your dog during the appointment. Your dog will go with the veterinary nurse to the ophthalmologist for the appointment and will be returned to you by the veterinary nurse in the waiting area. Should something need to be recorded on the certificate, the ophthalmologist will discuss the findings with you.

What you will need

You must bring your dog’s Kennel Club registration certificate with you to the appointment along with any previous eye test certificates.

Getting there

For information on how to get to Crufts at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), visit our show information page. The BVA/KC/ISDS Eye scheme examinations will be held in the vet centre, which is located in Hall 2.

Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to ask.

Kind regards

A great day today at the first ever Swiss Breeds Event organised by the Bernese Club. All four Swiss breeds were represented. Each breed was judged separately then the winners competed for BIS. A big thank you to our judge Jenny Shorer-Wheeler. Congratulations to the Bernese Club for hosting a wonderful event with fantastic rosettes and prizes. Just a shame there were nor more Swissies present. The BIS was won by an Appenzeller with Reserve BIS going to the Entlebucher.
