What should you look for while choosing your bit and bridle?
We have a useful guide from the BETA member Equizax .
1. Correct Adjustment is Key
Proper adjustment is crucial for effective communication and control:
Noseband Placement: Position the noseband two fingers below the cheekbone to avoid impeding the sensitive facial nerves.
Bit Position: Ensure the bit rests comfortably in the interdental space (bars of the mouth) without excessive tension. The bit should not contact the horse’s teeth or pinch the lips.
2. Leather Care for Longevity:
Leather, require regular maintenance:
Cleaning: Use a pH-balanced leather cleaner to remove dirt and sweat. Follow with a high-quality conditioner to maintain elasticity.
Storage: Store the bridle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the leather from drying out and cracking.
3. Inspect the Bit
The bit’s condition directly affects the horse’s comfort:
Check Edges: Regularly inspect the bit for sharp edges or corrosion. Even minor imperfections can cause discomfort or injury.
Appropriate Selection: Choose a bit that suits your horse’s mouth conformation and training needs. Consult with an equine dentist and a professional fitter.
4. Reins and Buckles Maintenance
Reins and buckles are subjected to significant strain and must be regularly checked:
Rein Inspection: Look for any signs of wear, particularly at the attachment points. Replace reins that show fraying or stretching.
Buckle Integrity: Ensure all buckles and fittings are secure and free from rust or damage. Regularly check stitching for any signs of weakening

Winner announcement: 28 August
This competition is run by BETA on both Facebook and Instagram. Correct entries will be combined from both accounts and one winner will be selected at random from them. This competition is not sponsored, endorsed, or administered by, or associated with Facebook or Instagram. No cash alternative is offered. The judge’s decision is final.
Today we have some great tips from BETA member Equizax a manufacturer of Butterfly Freedom Girth.
Choose a girth which is designed to accommodate the natural contours of the horse’s chest, dispersing pressure evenly across the pectoral muscles and sternum. Ensure the girth sits snugly but comfortably:
• Positioning: Place the girth so it rests evenly along the horse’s barrel, ensuring that the central panel aligns with the sternum to distribute pressure effectively.
• Sizing: Measure your horse accurately and select the correct girth length. An ill-fitting girth can cause discomfort and impede movement.
Routine Buckle and Strap Inspection: Examine the stainless-steel buckles and high-tensile straps for wear and tear. Look for frayed stitching or any signs of stress.
Maintain Padding Quality
• Cleaning: Regularly clean the padding with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals that can degrade the material.
• Inspection: Check for wear in the padding, especially along the edges.
Replace any padding that shows signs of excessive wear to maintain comfort.
Final Check: Before riding, perform a final check to ensure the girth is firmly in place without excessive movement or slippage.
Thank you Equizax.

🌞 BETA Summer of Safety with Norbrook Laboratories GB ! 🌞
Today we have some Equine Wormer Top Tips for you!
• Pick up the poo – it really helps and it's free!
Poo-picking twice per week can help to keep parasite levels down.
• Test – don’t just Treat!
A simple worm test programme will ensure you are only using wormer doses as they are required.
Spring, Summer & Autumn: Faecal egg count for roundworms including redworms.
Spring & Autumn: Saliva test for tapeworm
Autumn time: blood test for small redworms
Keep new horses separate from your herd until you have tested and treated accordingly.
• To worm or not to worm!
Discuss your horses test results with your SQP, Vet or Pharmacist who will be able advise on an appropriate wormer to use, if this is required.
• Don’t under dose - Weigh horses accurately!
If you cannot access a weighbridge, use a weigh-tape and dose accurately.
Underdosing exposes the worms to a dose of wormer that is not adequate to kill them, which in turn leads to resistance.
• Does your horse have resistant worms?
After treatment, test again after 10-14 days to determine if the wormer has been effective.
Thank you, Norbrook Labs, for these invaluable tips! 🐴🔬
