Our final collective message for Overdose Awareness Day is to encourage people who use opiates to seek substitute medication and other prescribing support.
If you use opioids daily, local drug services can support you and prescribe alternatives like methadone or buprenorphine.
Our fifth message for Overdose Awareness Day is to raise awareness of some of the things you can do to support someone who’s overdosed.
Learning to spot the signs of an could save someone’s life:
- Difficulty breathing
- Blue colouring to the lips or fingertips
- Unresponsiveness
- Limp limbs
Know the signs, save a life.
Do you know how to save a life from an overdose?
3 steps to give someone the best chance of surviving:
- Call 999 and ask for an ambulance immediately
- Put them in the recovery position
- Carry naloxone and give it to the person in need
For Overdose Awareness Day, our fourth message with other drug recovery & treatment providers is to start low and go slow.
Start with a lower dose and wait for the peak effects to pass.
If you’re using illicit pills, consider splitting them and starting with a fraction of the pill.
Our third collective message with other drug recovery and treatment providers is to check your drugs.
You can submit an anonymous sample of the substances you use to the WEDINOS Project for analysis. It can take a few days to get results back: https://www.wedinos.org/
We’ve teamed up with other drug recovery and treatment services to share important messages ahead of Overdose Awareness Day.
Our second message? Avoid using drugs alone and stagger your doses.
Consider using the BuddyUp app: www.cranstoun.org/help-and-advice/harm-reduction/buddyup/
We’ve teamed up with other drug recovery & treatment services to share important messages ahead of Overdose Awareness Day.
Our first message is: always carry naloxone.
Naloxone reverses the effects of opioid drugs like he**in, morphine and methadone.
Drugs contaminated with synthetic opioids: a collective message Important information for anyone that uses drugs. The drugs available in the UK seem to be changing lately. As people services, we have come together to make a shared statement/clarification on some of the new drugs the people we support use, and the risks they present. New opioids have arrived in t...

It’s all part of the new ‘Here to help’ campaign that provides information, advice and support on managing those cost of living pressures. Money from the Household Support Fund has been provided to fund slow cookers, which are being given out to vulnerable and low-income families in Newcastle. These have been gifted to STARS to give out to our clients in the Newcastle under Lyme area. Along with each slow cooker, families will be given recipe cards to help them make the most out of their food.🙌
Thank you, Staffordshire County Council for the fifty slow cookers. Thank you to Phil and Jake from Aspire for delivering the slow cookers. Thank you to Angela (Service Manager) and Rebecca (Health & Wellbeing Nurse) for taking delivering of the slow cookers. The HALT team are running a Fibro scan clinic at John O Gaunt Newcastle-Under-Lyme on 23rd November 2022.
The scanner allows us to have a painless and non-invasive way of looking at how your alcohol use has impacted your liver’s health, and it takes only 10 minutes !!! 🙌
It is so important because if damage is detected early, then the recovery process can begin as soon as possible, and the liver has a better chance of repair. 💜
Appointments are around 15 mins long, once the scan is completed you will have a brief consultation, where we will look at how to offer you support on the best way forward – whether this be within the STARS service or by us completing a referral to the local Liver Specialist Team.
We have regular clinics within JOG and have a new clinic days booked in with Leek office of STARS.
If you are interested, please ask your keyworker about booking you a slot in on one of our clinic days!

Jonny completed the challenge within 10 hours!! Here at STARS we are so proud of him and the rest of the group for this amazing achievement. Congratulations Jonny! 🤩
Not only did Jonny achieve his goal of completing the challenge in under 12 hours, he has also managed to raise an amazing £385 for Humankind so far.
Here is a statement from our very own superstar!
"It was a long day! Getting up at 2am to drive to Yorkshire was tough in itself and then my car broke down on the way, caused me to be late. The team had to set off without me meaning I had the added challenge of trying to catch up when they were over an hour ahead! I then went 20 minutes in the wrong direction too🤦♂️ !! But, I turned around got my head in the game and then ran like Forest Gump until unbelievably I managed to catch up!! I then stuck with the team for the remainder of the challenge and I'm so proud of everyone for taking part at such late notice... It was a tough challenge but, we did it!"
There is still time to donate! Here is the link below and thank you for your continued support!!
