THURSDAY THOUGHT: In 'The Better Angels of Our Nature', published in 2011, Steven Pinker argued that we live in the least violent period in human history. Many people's instant reaction to this would be to call it absurd, since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were still going on, as were many other violent conflicts.
Yet he compares it to the world of 1976 when he graduated from university and imagines that if anybody had predicted then that:
- The Cold War would end without a shot being fired
- Fascism would vanish from Europe, with Portugal, Spain, and Greece becoming liberal democracies.
- The same would happen in Taiwan, South Korea, and most of Latin America.
- Within three years the president of Egypt would hug the prime minister of Isreal in the Knesset, and they would sign a peace treaty.
- In South Africa, the apartheid regime would be dismantled with no bloodbath and no violent recriminations for the white minority.
.. anyone listening to this prediction would assume that this person had been on the L*D.
It's been twelve years since the book was published, and in that time Russia has shown itself to be less-than gracious in losing the Cold War, the world's two most stable democracies lurched toward xenophobia, and Israel is currently in its bloodiest situation since at least 2006.
I wonder if Steven Pinker's arguments still hold up, or if they ever did.
