'Holistic Cancer Care: SURVIVING AND THRIVING AFTER A DIAGNOSIS' by Chanchal Cabrera.
Cancer rates are rising everywhere. The average adult in North America or Europe today has a 30 to 50% chance of being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. At the same time, more and more people are turning to natural medicine as part of their cancer treatment and management plan. Herbal medicine can be used to significant effect across this whole continuum to support normal metabolic functions. Herbs can promote foundational or constitutional wellness, building resilience and immune functions. Herbs can also help manage symptoms such as skin lesions or neuropathy, among other benefits, and exert direct cytotoxic anti-cancer activities. In this way, herbal medicine plays a key role in the practice of holistic oncology.
Some of these approaches require professional guidance from a qualified herbalist, but the patients themselves can do a lot at home. From choosing specific foods for their anti-cancer actions to making your tea blends for managing symptoms of chemo to increasing the benefits of radiotherapy with specific supplements, herbal medicine can be used by all cancer patients to promote wellness and empower the healing journey.
CHANCHAL CABRERA MSc, FNIMH, RHT, (RH) AHG.
Chanchal is a medical herbalist and has been in clinical practice for 35 years with a speciality in holistic oncology. She held the faculty chair in Botanical Medicine at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster 2004-2016, and she publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on medical herbalism, nutrition and health.

Conference Highlights: Why Using Sustainable Herbs Matters
Highlights by Ann Armbrecht, SHP Director.
On April 7, 2023, with the Herbal Alliance, the Sustainable Herbs Program co-hosted a half-day conference, Why Using Sustainable Herbs Matters. Sebastian Pole, founder of Pukka Herbs and trustee of the Herbal Alliance, and I organized this event to bring together experts in sourcing and quality to discuss how ethical sourcing is important. Not only because it is the right thing to do for the people, plants and planet, but responsible sourcing is critical because it helps ensure that:
the herbs in the bottle are what the label claims they are;
those herbs are of the right quality with the right balance of constituents shown to have the effects that the product is said to have; and
that other ingredients, dyes, chemicals, etc. are not in the bottle.
As the speakers in made clear, the most effective and cost-effective path is to address these issues at the source, especially by investing in the relationships needed to ensure that people will take care at each step of a plant’s journey from seed to finished product.
Some of the highlights of the conference follow. This is by no means a thorough summary of key points discussed. As Anastasiya Timoshyna, Director of Strategy, Program, and Impact at TRAFFIC, said, “Not knowing is not an answer anymore.” If you missed the conference, I encourage you to watch the presentations here. Your purchase (for $10) supports our ongoing outreach from the conference.
