A morning visit to the lake at Puivert is always a good one. Only a handful of families and much quieter than the afternoons.

Just a short journey from the house, the lake at Puivert is a beautiful setting for a days swimming, picnicking or simply relaxing in the sun.

One of our favourite places to be.

Who would have thought getting 10 men to line up correctly was so complicated!

What a fabulous photo, of a fabulous view. Around 40 minutes from Belesta is Chioula, you can park up, take a walk to the Refuge de Chioula, visit their animals and have a drink at the kiosk. In the distance you can see the Dent D’orlu rising up.

Now the evenings are a bit lighter and the sun is beginning to warm up, a refreshing glass of wine on the terrace after an afternoon at the lake doesn’t feel too far away.

This is one of my favourite photos. The sunlight, the space, the cool breeze through the door. Knowing there’s beautiful warm sunshine waiting outside.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, oven and hob and even an original bread oven tucked into the wall!

Just over 30 minutes from Belesta is the beautiful town of Mirepoix. One of our favourite places to visit. Full of history, the town and cathedral are worth a wander around. You can even have guided tours of the cathedral.

The colourful medieval buildings of the main square give a unique atmosphere and setting for the hugely popular Monday market. When you’re finished at the market peruse the galleries, brocantes and artisanal shops in the square and down the fascinating narrow streets.

The area surrounding the gite is Cathar country, a period of time with great significance in French history.

These two photos show the Chateau de Montsegur and the Chateau de Roquefixade, both around 20 minutes from the gite. Bring some sturdy shoes and take a walk to top for amazing views, and try to spot the other Chateau in the distance.

One of the lovely families that visited the gite last summer sent us this photo after a morning stroll to the local boulangerie🥖

The area around Belesta is lucky to have access to many prehistoric cave systems. You can see Palaeolithic cave paintings in Niaux, take a boat through the rivière labouiche souterraine (first two photos), or walk around la grotte de Lombrives (last photo).

The sites are amazing and well worth a visit.

Would you believe there are 3 airports you can fly into to get to Belesta! Toulouse, Carcassonne and Perpignan are all in the area, with car hire at the airports.

If driving is your preference, there are plenty of ferry ports on the northern coast of France and Bilbao in the north of Spain to get you there from the UK.

You could even get the train down to Toulouse!
