THE FASTEST BEETLE IN THE WORLD?
Resting on the sand before it scuttles away, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of possibly one of the fastest beetles in the world, the rare Northern Dune Tiger Beetle - only found at two locations in the UK. A specialised species restricted to embryo dune environments, it requires certain temperatures to function. They burrow in the sand to keep warm and hide within the marram grass to keep cool. It is super speedy on the ground, running to catch its prey, yet appears clumsy and quite comical when it takes flight.
