Endometriosis and PCOS are two distinct yet often confused conditions that impact women's reproductive health.

Endometriosis involves the growth of tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus, leading to chronic pain, heavy periods, and fertility issues. In contrast, Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder where the ovaries may develop numerous small cysts, leading to irregular periods, excessive hair growth, acne, and weight gain.

Both conditions can cause heavy, painful periods and difficulty conceiving. However, their underlying causes and symptoms differ.

It’s essential to advocate for yourself if you suspect you might have either condition. Seek medical advice, ask questions, and push for the care you deserve. Understanding the differences and similarities between endometriosis and PCOS can help you manage your health more effectively and take control of your well-being. 🌸

Magnesium: Is it better to put it on your skin or put it in your mouth? 🤨

According to Charlotte Faure-Green, in this months blog post around magnesium, there is a strong case for both.

Topical magnesium, such as magnesium oil, lotions or - everyone’s favourite - Epsom baths, are a good addition to oral supplements. When magnesium is applied directly to the skin and absorbed through the tissues, it can be beneficial for targeting specific areas of muscle soreness or cramps. Some people find it a good option if they experience digestive issues with oral supplements.

However, the scientific evidence on the efficacy of topical magnesium is still limited compared to ingesting it. Ingested magnesium is generally more reliable for overall systemic benefits and specific dosing, but topical applications can be a useful complement, especially for localised relief!

What are your thoughts? Do you add magnesium into your diet?

Period bloating is a common issue caused by several factors:

✨Hormones: Oestrogen can lead to water retention, making you feel puffier, especially before your period starts.
✨Water Retention: Your body tends to hold onto more water during your cycle, contributing to that bloated feeling.
✨Prostaglandins: These chemicals help your uterus contract but can also cause gastrointestinal changes like bloating.
✨Diet & Lifestyle: Increased salt intake or stress can worsen water retention and affect digestion.

To manage bloating, reduce salty foods, stay active, and drink plenty of water.

Fran Kirby has spoken about how the menstrual cycle impacts training and playing football. She highlighted the challenges that come with fluctuating energy levels, pain, and the mental strain that can occur during different phases of the cycle. It’s a reality that many female athletes face but is often overlooked.

But this isn't just about female athletes. This is the case for all women who are exercising. From PE at school, all the way to hitting the gym or playing a local sport.

Feeling a bit off playing your game today? Didn't perform your best in that school race? Didn't last at the gym as long as 'normal'.

Thats ok - its all part of our cycles 🔄

🩸 Your Period After Pregnancy: What Changes?

Pregnancy brings a lot of changes, and your period is no exception. Here’s what you might expect postpartum:

1. Irregular Cycles: Your menstrual cycle may be unpredictable as your body adjusts, especially if you’re breastfeeding.

2. Heavier or Lighter Flow: You might notice a change in the volume of your period. Some women experience heavier periods, while others find their flow is lighter.

3. Increased Cramps: Post-pregnancy periods can sometimes be more painful due to changes in your uterus.

4. Delayed Return: If you're breastfeeding, your period might not return for several months. Prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production, can suppress ovulation.

5. Changes in PMS: You may notice differences in premenstrual symptoms. Mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness might be different from what you experienced before pregnancy.

6. Clotting: Some women notice more clotting in their menstrual blood post-pregnancy. This can be due to the uterine lining shedding differently.

7. Birth Control Influence: If you start using hormonal birth control postpartum, this can also affect your menstrual cycle, making it lighter, more regular, or in some cases, stopping it altogether.

Remember, everyone’s experience is unique. If you have concerns about your postpartum periods, consult with a healthcare professional to ensure everything is on track. Have you noticed changes in your period after pregnancy?

🩸 What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the uterus starts to grow into the muscular wall of the uterus. This can lead to an enlarged uterus and cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, severe cramps, bloating, and pain during in*******se.

Symptoms:
- Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Women with Adenomyosis often experience unusually heavy periods.
- Severe Cramps: Intense menstrual cramps that can begin before your period and last throughout the cycle.
- Bloating and Abdominal Pressure: A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the lower abdomen.
- Pain During In*******se: Discomfort or pain during sexual activity.

Causes:
While the exact cause of Adenomyosis remains unknown, it's often associated with childbirth and uterine surgeries. Factors like age and hormonal changes may also play a role.

Diagnosis:
Diagnosing Adenomyosis can be challenging. Doctors may conduct a pelvic exam to check for an enlarged uterus, and imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI can help in identifying the condition.

Treatment:
Managing Adenomyosis involves several approaches:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications can help alleviate cramps and discomfort.
- Hormonal Therapy: Birth control pills, hormonal IUDs, or other hormone therapies may reduce symptoms by regulating menstrual cycles.
- Surgery: In severe cases, surgical options like endometrial ablation or hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be considered.

Understanding and managing Adenomyosis is vital for improving quality of life. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional to explore your options and find a treatment plan that works for you.

Let's continue to raise awareness and support each other in navigating the challenges of Adenomyosis. Have you or someone you know been affected by this condition? Share your experiences and tips for managing symptoms in the comments below 👇🏼

🏅As the Olympics come to a close, let's talk about a crucial topic for female athletes: the relationship between training and menstrual cycles.

📈 Training Impacts on Your Cycle:
1. Intensity Matters: High-intensity training can cause changes in your menstrual cycle, sometimes leading to irregular periods or even missed cycles.
2. Body Fat Percentage: Low body fat, common in elite athletes, can also disrupt your cycle due to hormonal imbalances.
3. Stress Levels: Physical stress from intense training can affect your cycle, increasing cortisol levels which might lead to cycle irregularities.

🔄 Cycle Impacts on Your Training:
1. Performance Fluctuations: Hormonal changes throughout your cycle can affect strength, endurance, and energy levels. You might notice a dip in performance or increased fatigue at certain times.
2. Injury Risk: Some phases of the cycle can make you more prone to injuries due to changes in joint laxity and muscle function.
3. Recovery: Your recovery rate can vary with your cycle, with certain phases promoting faster healing and others requiring more rest.

🩸 Tips for Managing Training with Your Cycle:
1. Track Your Cycle: Use apps or a calendar to monitor your menstrual cycle and plan your training around it.
2. Adjust Training Intensity: Listen to your body and adjust the intensity of your workouts according to your cycle phases.
3. Nutrition & Hydration: Ensure you're fuelling your body properly, especially during phases when you might feel more fatigued.

Remember: Understanding and respecting the connection between your cycle and training can lead to better performance, fewer injuries, and a healthier relationship with your body. 🙌🏼

Breaking the Silence: Female Athletes and Menstruation in Elite Sports
As we gear up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will be the first to feature full gender parity among athletes, it's essential to celebrate the strides made in women's sports: new mixed events, increased visibility of women's competitions, and more top-level female coaches and officials. 🌟

Yet, one topic remains under-discussed—menstruation. 🩸 An increasing number of female athletes are speaking out about their periods to break the taboo and normalise this natural part of life.

It all started with swimmer Fu Yuanhui at Rio 2016, who candidly shared, "Actually, my period started yesterday evening," after a race. This honesty opened the door for other top athletes to share their experiences, highlighting the impact of menstrual symptoms on their performance and well-being.

Menstrual symptoms vary widely, but discussing them openly is crucial. Let's continue this conversation and support our athletes in every aspect of their lives.

What's your experience with periods and sports? How do you think we can better support women in this area? Share your thoughts below! 👇
