Did you know there are many forms of Dementia? 💜
Our podcast hosts and Cornwall Memory Cafe Network Wayfinders Anna & Jules talk to Newquay Purple Angels Ambassador Lynn Bartrip-Kay as she speaks passionately about the Purple Angels and their mission to create a dementia-aware community through workshops and awareness sessions.

Lynn works tirelessly to spread awareness of the disease, frequently operating dementia awareness workshops in Cornwall for businesses and everyone that wants to come along. Lynn talks about her own experience with having loved ones with dementia, she reads an extremely poignant poem about the illness and the power of music for people with memory loss, and how above all else, music can bring back some memories and emotions.

Purple Angels was co-founded by Norman McNamara a resident of Torbay, Devon, UK who was diagnosed with dementia at only 50 years of age. Whilst out shopping one day he was rudely spoken to by a shopkeeper and decided to change the way people see dementia and treat others. The organisation has now grown to operate globally with over 1000 ambassadors!

A brilliant project we've been involved with: I'm Still Here! A series of 6 weekly creative workshops for people with early onset dementia and their carers.

Drums4Fun CIC provided two very different percussion experience workshops for 'I'm Still Here' a Support Group for people living with early onset Dementia and their partners. Friday 23rd June was a sensory story session where we accompanyed storyteller extraordinaire Henry Austeick using our unique Soundbeam 6 system. Henry took us on a journey through India experiencing the sounds and smells of this exotic country, hosed by Penryn based arts space, The Fish Factory. On Friday 30th June we were based in the beautiful surroundings of the a Penryn based community garden project, Loveland. The 1980's music theme included music from Aztec Camera, The Buggles, The Eurythmics, Adam and The Ants and many more! A small but beautifully formed group of enthusiastic people enjoyed experimenting with our full range of percussion. Many thanks to Jessica Voke for organising and to Kirsty Dexter of Cornwall Memory Cafe Network and Francis Baring from Cornwall Community Foundation for joining in!

Cornwall Memory Café Network
Supporting Memory Cafés in Cornwall

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
to be held on Friday 29th January at 10am
on Zoom
Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84126754368?pwd=NmU0bEdKN3VjeE9wQ0NjK0Zka3JoUT09
Meeting ID: 841 2675 4368
Passcode: 643790
We do hope that you and or members of your Memory Café can attend the forthcoming AGM from the comfort of your own home! It will be a great chance to catch up with cafes around the County, and hear what the board has been up to on your behalf. It will also enable your café to ensure that they have attended at least one Forum meeting this year. For some it will be the third this year!
As the work of the network expands, yes even when our precious memory cafes are unable to meet in the ‘usual’ manner, the board is looking for additional willing people to join the board. The more board members we have the more skills we have, and the more man(/woman) hours to make a difference. The Cornwall Memory Café Network’s main focus remains to support our cafes. The experience of the last nine months has highlighted the need to have a more influential voice within Cornwall and beyond representing those who are living with memory loss or caring for someone with memory loss.
Please have a conversation with your committees, and if you can possibly find the time to consider joining the board we are sure you would find it both interesting and rewarding. Your greatest ‘skill’ is your interest. If you would like to nominate someone to the board, with their permission, please email me [email protected].
If you would like to be nominated please ask a colleague to do it for you.
