Buffalo Vision Derby
Using her background in fine art with a passion for leathercraft, Helen has been making quality leathergoods for several years.
If you are looking for something very special, beautifully handmade and made to last then take a look....
Well, the plan was to be selling these bags at Cromford Steam Rally this weekend, but sadly I’ve had to cancel after my recent car crash.
I’m disappointed to be missing a lovely event especially after it was cancelled due to flooding last year.
Anyway, the bags will soon be available at The Derbyshire Makers shop at Rowsley or message me if one takes your fancy.
The Identity Store is having a Celebration of Leather at Matlock Football ground on 27th and 28th July.
There’s loads of leathery things to see and try your hand at, including a coaster mini-workshop I’m running on both days.
You can book the workshop or find out more with the link below.

Workshops In-Person and Online leathercraft workshops offer a chance to learn new skills and progress your techniques
The first ‘big make’ I ever did was a unicorn mask which I’ll never sell.
I’ve made a baby one which will be for sale- which is a shame as they look rather nice together! This one can’t be worn but comes with a display stand.
This week I have been mostly at Cromford Mills, in my spiritual home Weaveknitit.
I love that the shop is filled with colour and patterns and light, as well as lovely customers.
Not a business post but it’s lovely, and I can’t find it through my personal account.
Today is St Helen’s Day and name day for Helens everywhere! I have been celebrating by making these cheerful little card holders

This painting took me soooo long! Trying to blend the clouds and sky using acrylics that dry in minutes was a real challenge.
Lovely colour combinations colour-picked from this beautiful acrylic artwork by Helen Jones Buffalo Vision Derby

Part of the Stuff and Nonsense Collection, we love this incredible acrylic painting on canvas based on 'The Haywain' by John Constable with Helen's fun twist on the concept 🦩

There are still a few places left on Saturday's Introduction to Leather Carving and Surface Decoration with Helen Jones of Buffalo Vision Derby. In this practical session, Helen will teach you some introductory techniques to leather carving and you will create your own oak-leaf-design leather coaster. After lunch you will experiment with a marbling technique on leather to produce unique surface decoration patterns and then turn it into a useful valet tray.

This is a great article discussing the ethics and realities of leather and leather substitutes. It’s a complex subject and covers two separate issues, animal welfare and environmental impact. It’s impossible to put one against the other, and obviously many people will have strong feelings that it is unethical full stop. Hopefully some of you may find it interesting to consider things you may not have thought of.
Times are tough for leather as environmental and ethical concerns become increasingly prevalent in the craft industry.
We asked Yasmin Jones-Henry to speak with the makers who are reimagining the material or, in some cases, abandoning it altogether. This includes British Pasture Leather, who exclusively work with skins of cattle raised on regenerative farms in the UK, as well as producers like Nova Kaeru and Pinatex, which make leather-like alternatives from sustainably-sourced fish and pineapple leaf fibres.
You can read this article for ✨ free✨ on our website for the next 7 days: https://bit.ly/432Bpjl. And make sure to keep an eye out – in the run-up to the release of our Spring/Summer 2024 issue, we’ll be giving complimentary access to more of our print-exclusive articles.

This was one of those makes when you say ‘never again’ until you’ve forgotten how gruelling it was. Worth it though, it’s probably my favourite item. Photo of part of the pattern in comments to give you an idea of the stitch holes, each punched singly.
What are you making? This is a rather elaborate Harry Potter feel bag by artist and leatherworker Helen Jones Buffalo Vision Derby - it is designed to look like a stack of books - it actually opens right up to reveal marbled calf leather lining. Bag with detachable purse. Hand dyed, cut and stitched with marble dyed interior. .Helen has estimated there were between 8-10 thousand stitch holes needed, each one individually punched out!

I’ve been wanting to make this for ages, and I’m really pleased with how it’s come out. Good job too because it was a nightmare to make.
Some of you will recognise the gorgeous viking inspiration, from Ragnar in The Last Kingdom. While vikings may not have been particularly famous for their IPad cases, did you know Harald Bluetooth was a Danish king born in 911 CE, and his rune initials make up the Bluetooth symbol we use today?

I seem to be having a run on paintings at the moment rather than leatherwork. Here’s an old painting of sweet Greta who sat for me on several occasions. She had such a beautiful soul. Not my dog but I loved her very much.
I was lucky enough to spend the morning at the magnificent workshop of Nigel Armitage today.
What a kind and helpful guy- I’m really looking forward to upping my game with his help, advice and plenty of tea.
All ready for a great weekend at Peak Village!
Please share this if you can, and come along to say hi!
It's St Patrick's Day ☘️ so we've another Makers highlight today..... our own Sharon O'Connell (Sharon' Studio Art) not only runs TDM, but is also a textile artist who produces landscapes from wool! She layers wool and then felts it to give depth and detail. Many of her pictures are inspired by Ireland (as well as Derbyshire) as she is married to an Irishman and regularly takes trips over to visit family and friends..... the closest link we could find today 😂
☘️ Happy St Patrick's Day everyone! ☘️
