Namji, Cameroon Beaded Fertility Dolls
Circa 1940’s
These wooden dolls originate from the Namji people of north-western Cameroon is in a highly stylised, geometric human form. Its proportionately small head is incised with a stark facial expression on both sides. Both faces have shell eyes.
The torso is adorned with multiple strings of shell beads. The wrists, ankles and necks are adorned with coral and turquoise beads respectively.
These dolls were given to young Namji girls to play with, but also to prepare them for motherhood. Caring for such dolls also was thought to promote fertility. Often such dolls were worn strapped to the back like a real infant.
Occasionally, these dolls were given to infertile women in the hope that it would aid pregnancy. They were commissioned from a carver for this purpose after which they were taken to the tribe’s witch doctor/ nganga, who performed rituals to inject force and respect (nkinda) into the doll. These dolls became fe**sh objects and were provided with food offerings and care to sustain its power.
Mounted on Perspex plinths, overall in good condition with wear and tear commensurate with earlier use.

This is a revolutionary opportunity to provide a touchstone service to members of the public and collectors, who are frustrated with underperforming investments elsewhere, and are looking for alternative ways of investing.

People have bought and collected precious items from time immemorial, whether for status or just pleasure. Antique silver and gold jewellery are intrinsic, and in most instances have practical uses. Solid silver and gold items have a minimum, scrap value based on weight, linked directly to the price of the base material.

We use our expertise, accumulated over decades, to identify opportunities of value in by prominent makers, and collectable objects comprising precious metals, enamel and semi-precious stones, based on rarity, provenance, including family crests and armorials.

We identify Provincial, English, Irish, American, Oriental, Middle Eastern, Russian Hallmarks and Continental items of Silverware, Jewellery and Collectibles. We have an extensive knowledge of Antique Silver, Old Sheffield plate, their periods, styles and influence, an understanding of provenance, condition reports, makers’ marks, forgeries and repairs.

We use referencing techniques, including on-line resources at The V&A, The British Museum, The British Library, and City of London Business Library.
