All children, not just those who have early speech and language difficulties, benefit from support with phonological awareness. Repetition, rhyming and alliteration in this classic book mean it is a great one to share with your child. The extra activities that come with this version also help to reinforce any new vocabulary they're hearing.

🌍✨ What If We Stopped Focusing on Fluency and Started Listening Instead? ✨🌍
This International Stuttering Awareness Day (22nd October), let's embrace this year's theme:
'The Power of Listening – People Who Stutter Have The Unique Opportunity To Teach The World To Listen'.
As a Speech and Language Therapist, I’ve learned that stuttering isn’t about 'fixing' speech-it’s about creating space for every voice to be heard. People who stutter show us the importance of patience and empathy. They invite us to pause, reflect, and listen in a way that values the message, not just the delivery.

🧠 Today is DLD Awareness Day! ✨
As a Speech and Language Therapist, I want to help raise awareness about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
Did you know DLD affects 1 in 14 people, yet it’s not widely recognized? Let’s change that! Here are 10 facts about DLD to help you learn more and spread the word:
💜 With the right support, individuals with DLD can achieve social, academic, and professional success.
💜 Learning to read relies heavily on language skills, making this difficult for those with DLD.
💜 DLD is invisible – people with DLD don’t look different from their peers.
💜 DLD affects language, not intelligence.
💜 All languages spoken by a person with DLD will be affected.
💜 DLD can co-occur with other developmental challenges.
💜 Adolescents with DLD benefit from specialized support to develop their language skills.
💜 DLD affects people globally from all socio-economic backgrounds.
💜 The exact cause of DLD is unknown, but it can run in families and be influenced by genetics.
💜 DLD is a lifelong condition, and adults can have DLD too.
Let’s spread the word and ensure individuals with DLD get the support they need! Learn more at www.RADLD.org
I’m so touched by this wonderful feedback! I’m thrilled to hear that my guidance was helpful and to know I made a difference in her speech journey. 🥰

Every day, but especially today on Autistic Pride Day, I celebrate the incredible diversity, strengths, and unique perspectives of the autistic community. 🌟
As a speech and language therapist, I am passionate about supporting and empowering autistic individuals to communicate and express themselves in their own unique ways.
Autistic Pride Day is a time to embrace neurodiversity, challenge misconceptions, and promote understanding and acceptance. It's a reminder that every voice matters and every voice deserves to be heard and respected. Let's honour the contributions and achievements of autistic individuals while advocating for inclusion and accessibility in all aspects of life.

How would you describe yourself using only positive affirming language? 💭
This was the question I posed to attendees at the Rise & Shine Breakfast Networking Club as I began my talk on neurodiversity-affirming language in the workplace, first describing myself with positive and neurodivergent-affirming language, and then with only negative words.
The aim was to get everyone thinking about the power of positive neurodiverse language and how it can shape our perceptions and interactions, especially concerning neurodiversity.
➡️ As today is Neurodiversity Pride Day, I wanted to share a few of the areas I covered on this subject at the talk:

Today is National Speech Pathologist Day and I want to utilise this to help dispel some possible confusion.
Is a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) the same as a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)? 🤔
Yes! Speech and Language Therapist is the title generally used in Great Britain, whereas Speech and Language Pathologist is used in America.
The job is the same and both SLTs and SLPs are registered with their national bodies. In the UK/GB that is the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT). There is also a registered body for SLTs in private practice like me - the Association of SLTs in Independent Practice (ASLTIP).
💭 Are you an elocutionist?
Nope! SLT/SLPs are communication specialists. Their role is to ensure everyone has access to communication, which is a basic human right. This can involve working on speech sounds to help people be understood by everyone around them, but does not extend to 'formal speaking'. I've had comments over the years like 'Ooooh I better speak properly then!' 'oh I need that, I want to sound posh.'
💭 Don't you just play all day?
Nope! We know that children learn and engage best when they're playing. Therapy strategies are often ingrained in play so the child doesn't feel pressured or scrutinised. It might look like 'just play' but it's so much more. We always work with parents too, to hand over strategies so they can use them in play between sessions.
💭 Can you 'fix' my child?
Whether your child has speech, language and/or communication difficulties, there is nothing 'wrong' with them and they don't need to be 'fixed'. They might need some extra support to help them reach their potential but don't we all need that sometimes?

The second asks, "Are you an elocutionist?" and notes that "SLT/SLPs are communication specialists." The third addresses the misconception "Don't you just play all day?" explaining that therapy strategies are ingrained in play. The fourth image questions "Can you 'fix' my child?" clarifying that children don't need to be 'fixed' but may need extra support to reach their potential. Each image includes a small icon of a person with dark hair and a speech bubble in the bottom right corner.
