Hello 👋🏼

I thought it about time to reintroduce myself on here. I’m Gemma, the chief volunteer here

I will repost our trustee introductions on our stories if you would like to take a 👀. We are all volunteers, sharing a goal to turn our frustrations at inequality into action.

I am an NHS manager by trade, helping people bring ideas and improvement s to patients is my bread and butter.

I am passionate about the value of palliative care to patients, their families , communities and wider society. I’m also a trustee at my local hospice and have worked supporting uk government funded projects to improve palliative care in Rwanda and Malawi.

In my spare time, there’s nothing more I love than a good book and my family who are so supportive of this journey.

We are Demeter.

We are just starting out on this path to raise awareness of one of the largest global health inequalities; the access or lack of access to pain medication for palliative care.

We have recently received a few new followers. 👋🏼 we are a small team behind the scenes. Check out our stories to meet us.

Leave a comment below to say hello and check out our website (link in bio) to hear more about our charity.

We are working hard behind the scenes to make sure the money we fundraised has the most impact.

Thank you to all our followers so far and to everyone that is supporting us. We feel really passionate about why we are here and what we are doing and are just so grateful that we have such wonderful support.

It is time for change. We need to focus on a life well lived. We need to make sure everyone has access to palliative care.

Please help us raise awareness of these issues by liking/sharing/commenting on our social media.

Thank you

Reposting this to our grid.

This is why we started. There is an equality that needs to be addressed. We know that with relatively modest fundraising targets we can make change by publishing research that will inform policy change.

We also want to create and build awareness around the need for palliative care and how important it’s role in our society.

To ensure a life well lived we need to talk about death.

10/06/2021

We believe health care is a human right and this should include palliative care.

Palliative care is not just about a ‘comfortable death’ but about a life well lived.

We want to address the global inequality around access to palliative care. Through research that can help inform impactful and lasting policy change.

Find out more by visiting our website or send through any questions to us our DMs are always open.

So the big question.... the why?

There is clear inequality with access to pain medication and palliative care based on gender and where you live.

Morphine distribution is one of the best available measures of coverage of palliative care services, since it is difficult to imagine how palliative care can be delivered effectively in the absence of appropriate pain relief.

Currently the inequality is also disproportionately skewed to middle and low income countries which is why Demeter is looking to fund our first audit project in Malawi.

A big question for a rainy Monday.

Why is there such disparity in access to pain relief?

We are a Uk based charity that is here to raise awareness of the disparity and to raise money to fund projects which can directly improve palliative services.

We will be answering this question as best we can. We want to be completely transparent with what we know and how we are working to make change. If there is anything else we can answer or discuss send us a message below or DM us. We would love to hear from you.

🌿SPRING IS HERE 🌿

Has anyone managed to see any bluebells this month?

To me they are a symbol of the start of spring - a season which brings new hope and beginnings.

In the language of flowers they are a symbol of humility, constancy, gratitude and everlasting love.

We have been a bit quiet on our social media recently while we have been hard at work on the next phase of our charity. We will be sending some updates soon so stay with us!

Send us a hello in the comments below - it’s always nice to remember we are real people behind these screens 👋🏼

Hi I'm Gemma, founder and chief volunteer . It took a bit of convincing to get me to come on here, but here goes…………………….
I’m an NHS manager by trade, helping bring ideas and improvements to patients is my bread and butter. Passionate about the value of palliative care to patients, their families, communities and wider society. I’m also trustee at my local hospice and have worked supporting UK government funded projects to improve palliative care in Rwanda and Malawi.

In my spare time, there’s nothing more I love than a good book and my family who are so supportive of this journey. Picture behind me is one of my favourites by the super talented

So I'm turning my frustration at inequality into action and aim to raise money to support the project that means a lot to me.

At the moment we are trying to build awareness so if you can like, share or comment comment. That would be great and help as many people as possible see Demeter.

Can you help us make positive change?

13/10/2020

Our project hopes to carry out a national audit of morphine use for palliative care in Malawi.

Demeter, together with local partners on the ground want to track the morphine supply chain, match it up with prescribing data in the clinics and wards across 28 hospitals in Malawi.

Gathering robust data helps ensure we understand the challenges and can help all partners to design interventions that will work.

We hope you join us in our journey check out the crowdfunder here:
