Council could attempt to overturn decision to build 270 homes just south of Newbury 29/02/2024

Residents across Highclere, East Woodhay, and Woolton Hill have asked me to explore every legal avenue to prevent this unsuitable scheme from coming forwards.

That’s why I’ve been pushing Basingstoke and Deane to bring a judicial review of the Planning Inspector’s flawed decision on Wash Water.

I hope the borough will confirm a judicial review relatively soon — so we can challenge the legal validity of the Inspectorate’s baffling ruling.

Council could attempt to overturn decision to build 270 homes just south of Newbury A local authority could be funding a judicial review into the decision to allow a large 270-home community just south of Newbury.

Large 270-home community will be built just outside Newbury after successful appeal 31/01/2024

This is a sad day and I am deeply disappointed by this outcome. However, I will continue to support the community to mitigate the proposals as they are delivered. Further comments below:👇🏻

As a community, we fought together to demonstrate the harms that this development would cause and the magical thinking laying behind the developer's assumptions.

I want to thank everyone involved in the campaign, including Highclere Parish Council, East Woodhay Parish Council, and the ERVPS Enborne River Valley Preservation Society.

The Inspector cast aside the work of residents in an arbitrary and flawed decision that did not give proper weight to East Woodhay's Neighbourhood Plan, nor our current and emerging Local Plan.

Once again, the Planning Inspectorate has made a decision that has moved the goalposts and undermined the work of our community. We are subject to the whims and preferences of individual Inspectors — there is no reliable or consistent approach in that organisation, I'm sorry to say.

Large 270-home community will be built just outside Newbury after successful appeal Controversial plans to build a large 270-home community just south of Newbury have been given the green light after a successful appeal.

Draft Local Plan published 👇🏻

Today, the Government clarified, yet again, that house building calculations are advisory, not mandatory.

Despite the council's unanimous vote to challenge the standard method-generated "target," the Lib Dem / Independent coalition on Basingstoke & Deane is ploughing on regardless.

Despite today’s announcement from the Secretary of State, Basingstoke Lib Dems and Independents are still promoting a Local Plan delivering nearly 16,000 homes. That means accelerating to more than 900 houses per year for ten years.

The Lib Dem decision to impose more homes than necessary in Basingstoke and Deane will disappoint those who hoped for a more reasonable, sustainable, and well-supported local housing plan.

The lack of progress in the seven months since the Independents took control of the council is disheartening.

Basingstoke Conservatives will continue to stand up for residents concerned about over-development, particularly near Bramley, Kingsclere, Sherborne St John, Old Basing, Whitchurch, Overton and Oakley.

❄️ 🏰 ☃️ 🎄

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...

13/12/2023

Basingstoke & Deane Independents & Liberal Democrats want to burden families with a 4.99% tax hike and increases to fees and charges.

Burning through reserves to fund unnecessary new council staff, they'll dig a £5.76m budget gap.

With cost-of-living pressures high, only local Conservatives
are standing up for family finances.

Basingstoke & Deane can't afford this wasteful, irresponsible Liberal Democrat / Independent Coalition.

They don't respect taxpayers' money; they don't recognise that families are finding it harder to make ends meet at the moment.

That's the borough council's Scrutiny Committee rejected their Budget.

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 / 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲: 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗧𝗮𝘅 𝗛𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀

⛔️ Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Scrutiny Committee stands firm, rejecting the Independent / Liberal Democrat coalition's plan for drastic financial changes.

📈Amidst the cost of living crisis, the coalition proposes hiring 31 new staff, maxing out council tax hikes, and increasing parking charges.

⏸️ This contrasts sharply with last year's Basingstoke Conservatives strategy, supported by Basingstoke Labour, which focused on supporting residents with a £1M Cost of Living allocation and freezing key charges.

‼️ The coalition's move raises serious concerns about their prioritisation and the burdens on Basingstoke's residents during these tough economic times.

LOCAL PLAN UPDATE👇🏻

On behalf of residents, I spent this evening holding the Administration at Basingstoke and Deane to account on housing numbers.

They have decided to pursue a Regulation 18 consultation using the same very high housing number that the Council unanimously voted against last year.

There is a real question mark over whether the Administration’s proposed “stepped” housing trajectory will be acceptable to the Planning Inspectorate. This is a clear risk.

And there are unanswered questions on the delivery and phasing of new homes across the borough.

They have proposed an accelerated housing delivery in the last ten years of the Local Plan, but have not properly demonstrated how this will be achieved.

I will always stand up for our villages and rural communities in the west of Basingstoke and Deane.

That means supporting homes where they have been chosen by the community, such as in Burghclere’s Neighbourhood Plan.

And opposing speculative schemes in the countryside that residents have not signed up to, such as the Bewley scheme at Washwater and the College Copse proposal at Bishop’s Green.

I will continue to keep you up to date, but we can now expect a six-week Local Plan consultation to be launched in the Winter.
