Another successful project completed in the Marchmont area! 🌳

To the front of the property, we fully refurbished both the sashes and the case and upgraded the glass to slimtech heritage double glazing. To the back of the property, the windows were 6 over 6 so we opted to fully refurbish the cases whilst supplying and fitting new double glazed sashes.

We took this job on to help a customer who had been let down by a builder she had employed to refurbish her windows.

As you can see the windows were left in a bit of a state but our expert joiners were able to bring them back to life. We correctly stripped the windows back and repaired any damage. The windows were then reinstated with new draught proofing beads and given three coats of paint.

It’s been a busy period for us recently as clients look to breathe new life into their home 🐣🌼

Installing draught-proofing is a regularly requested service to improve both the heat retaining efficiency & ease of movement in traditional sash windows; while also radically reducing external noise from passing motorists 🚗🤫

Industry leading draught-exclusion brush strips with new baton rods and parting beads are installed into windows after they have been routed out to take the appropriate gauge of draught pile. The lower sash window is routed along mid and bottom rails and fitted with 11.5mm gauge draught pile to complete the upgrade🪟✔️

Q: What is a common cause of a Sash cord failing?

A: It is often when excessive weight or force has been put on them. If the sashes are too heavy the cords simply cannot support them and if excessive forced is used such as when a window is slammed shut this can also cause cord failure. Don’t worry about this though it is still something that can be fixed.

A part of the renovation and refurbishment of a window is stripping the frames back to the bare wood.

This is a beautiful part of the process, removing layers of history to reveal beautiful wood with its texture and tone.

Timber Sash windows were developed in the Netherlands in the late 17th century with frames being constructed in a similar way to today.

Since then, timber windows have evolved with a variety of wood being used. Oak was the first choice however this has since been replaced with mahogany and imported soft woods are also popular often due to a lower cost.

Window transformation! One of our latest updates in the charming Newport on Tay, Fife.

The bathroom window previously featured outdated secondary glazing which made the space feel dull and less energy efficient.

This was replaced with brand new, like for like double glazing creating a more energy efficient space.

Q: How long should Sash & Case windows last?

A: Well over a century! If your windows are maintained well, once every few years it is completely realistic that they can last this long. Maintenance can include repairing any timber decay to stop it spreading into the rest of the frame and painting which helps to protect the frame from any external elements.

These pictures that we have recently discovered when working on windows show just how long they can last, we obviously don’t know the full story behind the writing found but we are guessing they had been marked when fitted/restored with the date. What we can make out one window says ‘Hutchison. August 1981. Warm day’ and the other says ‘Hutchison. July 1965. A cold day’.
