How Bryony Bakes Began
Baking is something I have always enjoyed doing, it is my time to myself where no one can interrupt me. My fiancé says I make a strange face when I’m concentrating, so he is no longer allowed in the kitchen whilst I am baking. However, he is the cake taster for every bake I create and wants an official title as ‘Professional Cake Taster’.
Baking has been part of my life since I was young and I can remember making cupcakes with my nan in her kitchen on a regular basis and always being more excited to lick the spoon rather than eating the actual cake. I still make these simple vanilla cupcakes with glacier cherries as a reminder of where my baking started. These are the perfect cupcakes when you’re fancying cake. They’re not too sweet and do not require any icing - result!
Over the past 5/6 years, I have been experimenting more and more with my recipes and adapting to them to make them perfect for me and my family - no one single recipe is perfect for everyone as we all have different tastes. For example, my family loves my ‘Bryony’s famous brownies’ and these took me around 2 years to create them to perfection. They come out of the oven with the perfect crisp on top and an amazing gooey centre.
The start of my baking business is a rather sad story, but at the same time, it is a great one. I recently lost my grandad, so I started baking on a daily basis to distract myself as I needed to constantly be on the go. From this, my sister encouraged me to create a business from my baking as she knows it is something I have always wanted to do, but I have never had the courage to actually do it. She said “What’s stopping you?” and to be honest, nothing! I was encouraged to do something that I love because when you love doing your job, your wellbeing is overall more positive. My grandad would always comment on the pictures I posted of my cakes saying “Yum, send me some” (he lived in Spain), so unfortunately, he never actually got to try any of my cakes. However, I am very sure he is watching, wishing he could eat some cake and feeling immensely proud of me. So, not only do I have my sister to thank for encouraging me to open my own business, but I also have my grandad.
