More progress, charcoal on canvas is proving to be a challenge but I’m getting there finally learning how to utilise my tools to work with my canvas, it’s definitely not the same as charcoal on paper 😭

As I progress I’m getting new ideas and techniques to try so this one might go on for awhile, bare with me. 🙏🏾🧡

I think I’m 50% there … 🤷🏾‍♂️

I don’t know anymore 😭 I think all of us artists are just experimenting through the whole process, 50% now could quickly become 20% later on when creativity wants to eclipse new directions! 🤣

Charcoal on canvas, the first of many struggles 😭

Much like life I learn quickly that intertwining three styles together comes with a need to adapt. One needs to work with the other to compliment each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Focusing on being the same as it was when it was a style on its own would highlight the flaws of the others next to it and vice-versa.

Beauty of the struggle.

This year marks 4 years of IGV Studio 🥳. In the last three years my art style changed with each year.

2020 was for ink and acrylic splashes, 2021 was pens and scribbles and 2022 I fell in love with charcoal drawings.

Through all three years I kept one thing constant. Expression and emotion, this year I am trying to marry elements of the three year together with expression and emotion as the catalyst (although it’s so hard to not try something completely new).

And with that began my struggles, I’ve already made a million mistakes 😭 but I’m learning …

This short narrative has a lot more to it than what I’ve chose to present to you. But what comes before and after these words don’t have the same sense of hope. So I wanted ti use this hopeful little snippet and see how this would shape the artwork.

The Eagle Owl 🦉

Nocturnal creature: most active and powerful in the dark. A bit like how I was starting to feel about my art.

Without the darkness and the emotional depth my art felt like it had lost power.

But see although most powerful and active in the dark, an eagles owls beauty is seen most in the light. Once it had overcome the dark - gaining strength and knowledge to see yet another bright day.

Just so although my art is most powerful when a dark cloud passes, when it’s all sunshine and rainbows I can show it’s beauty and joy in my art!

In a state of artistic flow, freedom and happiness right now.

I am creating just to feel free. No care about what this piece will say to others. No care about if the proportion is perfect. No care in the world for any control. Just pick up the charcoal and draw to my hearts content. Only making sure to achieve one thing, happiness.

A Tale of Two Sides …

… quite literally, I drew this piece one eye at a time with long breaks between each eye, thats where it’s all went wrong 😭.

I focused soo much on each eye individually that I lost my grip on how they related to each other which then meant the drawing was so out of proportion (just another life lesson through making art as per) …

But when you look at each eye individually it looked really good, just don’t look at the bigger picture 👀😭

So in classic IGV style I decided to cover up my mess with more mess in 🍊🟠 and distract you guys from the bigger picture, now the half use of colour forces audience to look at each eye individually … completely missing the fact that this piece and proportions are just not a thing! hehe smart ey? 👀

When traditional meets digital ✏️🟠 …

… this year I set out to experiment and have fun with my art and most importantly not to create for the sake of insta content but to do what I wish when I wish and mess around with pieces that I once deemed complete - to go back to them after a while and look at them with a new set of eyes.

Recently you all know I’ve fell in love with charcoal and have been creating pieces purely with charcoal but I couldn’t feel that it was missing a bit of me (yes the orange 🙄) …

SO this is my first attempt (although a little safe attempt I know) at bringing my energy to a traditional charcoal drawing. This time I’ve used digital techniques to experiment but next time I’ll pluck up the courage to go straight over the charcoal drawing with acrylics or oils or watercolour … who knows 🤷🏾‍♂️

Some details - do you think the digital mixes well with the original charcoal piece??? 🤔

Flawed not failed.

Yes. I am flawed, aren’t we all?
Maybe a little rough around the edges too.

Spend too long focusing on the flaws …
… you’ll lose grip of the beauty in the centre of it all.

Firstly let’s start off with ‘omg where is the signature orange!?…’ hmm well I’m trying to figure that out myself. I’ve recently fell in love with working with charcoal and now I start my journey to figure out how to add my own touch to what is a typical charcoal drawing … soon come the orange I hope 🤷🏾‍♂️

But this piece came with a lesson… I was experimenting with charcoal and water and used too much water in some areas which I tried to immediately scrape off - leaving me with torn wet paper as you can see …

But the flaw wasn’t the fact that I added too much water to the page, no. It was the fact that when I did so I tried to rectify my wrongs too quickly - leaving more permanent and obvious flaws.

A life lesson? - I think so … maybe a mistake should be let to settle before you try to find the solution. Act too quickly you might worsen the damage, making temporary … permanent.

It’s almost the end of the year and most importantly it’s Christmas tomorrow! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! 🧡🧡🧡

The years life handed me so many challenges that took me away from art, so I didn’t create as much as I had liked 🥺😭.

But I believe I’ve got my handle on life back and want to start on a creative new year … I’ve cleared out my feed and archived a lot (maybe some of your fave … sorry 👀 .. I’ll repost next year) and I’m ready to go!

I want to say a massive THANK YOU to all the wonderful friends I have made on here who continued tk support me through the year (even when I was so bad at replying to you guys) !!! 🧡

SAME BUT DIFFERENT. Although the drawing has changed slightly, sadly the caption will never change, as year after year the struggles continue and along with it so does the fight … is the end near? Is the end possible?

Maaveerar Naal (Great Heroes’ Day) - A day where we remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their all for the future of Eela Tamils.

But much like any Remembrance Day, I feel that today is about more than just remembering the past. Without the bravery and resilience shown by the Tamils, the chances of existence for my generation of Tamils would have been very slim, and the fact many of us have parents and grandparents still living to tell the tale is truly a thing to be grateful for.

Those who fought for the Tamils would have fought with the hope for change not in their lives but in the many lives that were to follow in future generations. This principal is something to live by even in this day and age. Generational well being.

Our fight against injustice as Tamils and as humans is still not over. Humans are still facing injustice all over the world. It is our responsibility to sacrifice and fight for those who we care about. Not because of a possible change we will see in our lives but for a possible change our future generations will see.

Most cultures and races have risen above hardship and injustice because of the fighting spirits and sacrifices of their own kind. So today, much like any other Remembrance Day is to remember sacrifice but also to remember the spirit and courage that we have been induced with and to take that spirit and use it in our lives.
