Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marcio da Silva

Saturday 18 May at 7.30pm

Mozart - Serenade No 10 K.361 Gran Partita
Dvořák - Serenade for wind instruments Op. 44

Mozart’s Serenade was made famous by the inclusion of the second movement in Peter Shaffer’s film and play ‘Amadeus’ in which the character of Salieri said, ‘This was a music I'd never heard... It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.’ The piece is scored for 12 wind instruments and double bass, a unique combination for the era in which it was written.

In May 2024 it will be 120 years since Dvořák‘s death and his wind serenade features many references to the Slavonic style of his homeland.

Information will be available on next season’s programme and season tickets will be on sale during the interval. Season tickets will offer the best value and include two free concerts.

Christmas candlelit concert - Rye News The sound of Venice in Winchelsea

Photos from Winchelsea Arts's post 17/12/2022

St Thomas’s Church was transformed into a Venetian basilica for Winchelsea Arts Christmas Concert - Un Natale Veneziano, featuring Ensemble OrQuesta Baroque directed by Marcio da Silva.

There was standing room only for this special concert which celebrated the Italian tradition during the nine days before Christmas, originating in folk music, where peasants playing musical instruments would go from town to town re-enacting the shepherds’ adoration of the Christ-child. This was transformed into the high art pastorale and was subsequently incorporated into the concerto form making it a celebration of the nativity.

The ensemble delighted the audience with a selection of Christmas concerti including those by Torelli, Corelli and Valentini as well as Winter from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
