We are delighted and privileged to welcome to SporTedd, the author, journalist and broadcaster JOHN MCCARTHY.

John was one of the hostages in the Lebanon hostage crisis, and became the United Kingdom's longest-held hostage in Lebanon when he was held as a prisoner for more than five years.

John has agreed to share his story with us as well as answer questions from our guests.

It’s the usual SporTedd dinner format and priced at £75 per head.

Dear SporTedd members

What a summer of sporting excitement it’s been so far - Wimbledon, the Ashes, the Open and, of course, the Women’s FIFA World Cup. A summer when heroes will be made and names etched in history…

…but we haven’t forgotten that in less than seven weeks’ time, it will be the eve of the Rugby World Cup. Twenty teams battling for the other pineapple-topped trophy: the Webb Ellis Cup, 200 years on from the moment William himself picked up the ball and ran at Rugby School.

And you can be assured SporTedd is not letting this momentous occasion pass us - or our members - by!

We invite you to “scrum down” to The Wharf on Wednesday, 30 August, for an evening previewing one of the most exciting and competitive Rugby World Cups ever. Our star-studded guests include broadcasters and rugby experts Jill Douglas and John Inverdale, alongside our very own Bill Sweeney, CEO of the RFU. We will be announcing more in the coming weeks.

This event is sure to be a hot ticket and is the perfect opportunity to sign off summer and turn our attention to the biggest event of the autumn.

So don’t miss out - get your name on the team list now!

WHEN: Wednesday 30 August, 7pm
WHAT: A SporTedd preview of the Rugby World Cup 2023
WHO: Jill Douglas, John Inverdale, Bill Sweeney and others
WHERE: The Wharf, Teddington
COST: Standard SporTedd .. £75pp to include three-course meal and a half bottle of wine

A big thank you to our members and to everyone who comes to the SporTedd events. Between dinners, we've been busy offering donations to worthy causes, including Orleans Park school Twickenham.
-Unity

We made a contribution of over £1,500.00 worth of equipment that will significantly enhance the students at the school, enriching their experiences and providing them with opportunities to participate in activities that may otherwise be challenging to afford or access. We are particularly delighted that students with special educational needs and disabilities now have equal access to sports and recreational activities, fostering their physical well-being, social interaction, and overall personal development.

Look out for the next SporTedd event, a rugby dinner at the end of the month...

Exciting new development for SporTedd...

For our event at the end of June, we are going slightly off-piste and are organising a non-sport focussed event.

Our guest on Tuesday, 28th June will be ROBERT HANNIGAN, a former Director of GCHQ in Cheltenham, which is one of the three Security Services (plus MI5 and MI6) which keep us safe and secure and plays a key part in the global security network on behalf of the UK, especially currently in the Russian conflict with Ukraine.

It is obviously unlikely you have heard of Robert, and although he will need to be careful about offering details about the precise workings of GCHQ, I am sure that people will find his views and insights into the working of the Security Services and especially GCHQ’s role in the areas of terrorism, major crime as well as the scale of threats and ambitions of China and Russia to be interesting if not compelling.

We are also hoping that a former member of the Special Forces (SBS or SAS) will also attend to give more of a view from the operational frontline.

The event will be in a private room at The Anglers and will be £40 for the evening (including a two-course dinner and wine).

14/05/2022

Ladies & gentlemen.... We are delighted to announce that tennis star TIM HENMAN will be our SporTedd guest at The Wharf restaurant in Teddington on Tuesday, June 7th.

Availability is limited so please book now to avoid disappointment. The timing is perfect for Tim to offer his unique insights into this year’s Wimbledon Championships as well as the big warm-up tournaments at Queen’s and others.

If you are already a member you can bring guests and if you would like to be a member you can join today by paying a £100 annual subscription. It promises to be another memorable SporfTedd evening. Don’t miss it…

Thanks to everyone who came along to the SporTedd dinner with Gary Lineker last week. It was a tremendous night, despite Mr Lineker falling ill with covid on the morning of the event.
By the simple use of a laptop, Alison Kervin was able to interview him on zoom, and by some technological wizardry, it was all broadcast loud and clear on a large screen.
Also, a huge thank you to Wayne Barnes and Craig Joubert for their fabulous rugby tales and their views on the Six Nations.
Lots of fun, and loads of money raised for charity.

Hello,

As 2020 comes to an end, a quick note from all of us at SporTedd to say a huge 'thank you' for your support through this most difficult of years.

Pay your respects to David Hogg on Teddington High Street on Monday 19/04/2020

Friends of much-loved SportTedd member David Hogg, who sadly passed away in Kingston Hospital on April 4th, probably from COVID-19, have been urged to turn out on Teddington High Street tomorrow morning to pay tribute to his life.

David, aged 61, had been ill for several weeks and his funeral will take place at Kingston Crematorium with only his immediate family in attendance because of the current government guidelines.

His close friend, Simon Lamb said: “I know it would be a great comfort to his wife Angela to see some familiar faces if people can take their socially-distanced exercise along The High Street at 11.45am next Monday morning so they can say goodbye to him en route to Kingston.”

Another friend, Martin Waldouck said: “David was such a joyous and lovely man and lived his life with so much enthusiasm and energy. He’s going to be hugely missed.”

Those who wish to pay their respects should gather near the King’s Head pub on the High Street and adhere to the 2-metre social distance guidance.

A memorial service will be held at a later date so his many friends can join his family for a celebration of his life and say their own farewells.

11.45am, 20th April 2020, Teddington High Street.

POSTPONEMENT NOTIFICATION * POSTPONEMENT NOTIFICATION

The Gary Lineker evening on 19th March is postponed. Emails will be sent out to everyone who has bought tickets.

Here is a note from our Chair:

Dear all,

After much consideration we feel that in the current climate it is both responsible and sensible to postpone our SporTedd evening with Gary Lineker, which was due to take place on Thursday, March 19th.

We had a sell out evening which would have raised a significant amount of money for SporTedd. Please do say if you’d like to be refunded if you have paid or if you are comfortable with us holding your monies for our next event. Gary Lineker has committed to a re-arranged event.

We had tentatively planned a pre-Olympic event for June but it’s probably best not to commit to another event until it is clear how long this crisis will last.

Thank you for your continued support.

Stuart Higgins, Chair, SporTedd
