What memories will these three young children have of their day on Drake’s Island today? Away from iPad and PlayStation? They’ve had a chance to meet real people telling real history in costume. They’ve seen muskets firing and have explored an island underground. Why don’t you bring your children over? The Island is one of the few local attractions in the tourist area that is open most days of the week during the season. Once on the island, you can be lost for hours in imagination among the wind, the sound of the sea, and the sense of history. www.drakes-island.com

Would you like to visit Drakes Island?! (Who wouldn't!) 🌊🏝️☀️
The Drakes Island Team would like to extend their full support to anyone (of any mobility/ability level) to visit the island.
They have put together some information on access (below) to help you decide on whether a visit would be safe and comfortable for you and your loved ones.
Please do contact us if you have any further questions, and please let us know if there is anything else we can include here to make it easier for those with different abilities to understand the access we can provide.
Please note the ferry and access to the island is currently not (full) wheelchair accessible. We are working on improvements for the future!
Part wheelchair users can access the island if your wheelchair can be folded or carried easily on and off the ferry, and up several flights of stairs. You would need to be able to walk short distances and use stairs. Please see details below for further information.
Low mobility/walking aid users: If you can complete short walks and stairs the island is accessible for those with low mobility and walking aid users. Once you are through the entrance areas, all other spaces are low sloped grass/stone ramps and/or flat.
You will be required to step over a small gap on and off the pontoons to board the ferry. There are 4 steps into the ferry with handrails and staff to assist you.
On the island you will need to disembark the ferry (again, up 4 steps and over a small gap onto the pier) at certain states of the tide a set of steps with a handrail would also be used to get off the ferry onto the pier.
The pier itself is metal grating with several sets of steps depending on the tide. These all have handrails and are quite shallow. See picture 1
The pier itself is flat and there is a short walk along the pier to another set of steps into the island. There is no handrail, but they are enclosed on both sides by walls (approximately 12) with a small break in the centre. See picture 2
The walk up into the square is approached by some very long and shallow concrete steps. There is no handrail. See picture 3
The last set of steps are stone (approximately 10) with scaffold handrails and a wall on one side. See picture 4. Once up these steps, the rest of the island is flat/sloped ramps.
The Drakes Island Team will be there to assist you during your visit.
There will be plenty of opportunities to stop and rest during tours. And we can provide a chair if you would like to sit out any sections and rest.
Please note some of the stairs do not have handrails due to the structures being heritage listed, some have handrails, walls or scaffolding rails.
Please do feel free to ask any further questions and we can assist with making sure your visit is as supported as possible.
Military History fan? Why not join us on a specialist tour focusing on Plymouth's civil war defenses . Now just £20 including return ferry!

The History of Drake’s Island
Drakes Island has an extraordinary history. Sir Francis Drake set sail from the island in 1577 to circumnavigate the globe, it also played a crucial role in defending the Plymouth from French and Spanish invasions. The island has been used as a prison, a religious centre, a refuge and, most recently up until 1989, it was an adventure training facility.
As of August 2019, Drake's Island has a new custodian, Morgan Phillips. Morgan's Guardian Industrial UK (GIUK) company is currently involved in numerous building projects in the South West and he has plans to, “restore it for the people of Plymouth and visitors to the city.”
