WRCH Haven & Jigsaw Library

A local registered charity aiming to get folk of all ages together to share interests and socialise.

In addition to our mobile workshop outside the British Legion Club this Thursday (where we can show you how to use power tools, and have bird and bat boxes for sale) the Haven has been requested to put on several 'shared interest' activity meetings.
Haven active meetings run from 2pm to 4 pm. There are bus connections to within 100 yards of the Club from all around the area that arrive after 1.00pm and return before 5pm.
The Haven will be providing the equipment and guidance to get these activities running in the spacious hall at the British Legion Club
This week's activities are for a small group to begin to 'crochet together', for a second group to look at 3D modelling and production, and for a third group to try to 'surf the internet in safety'.
You are welcome to come along and join one of these groups, or indeed play one of the many games we have with us.
Tea and coffee are available in the warm space of the hall.

Hi to all those interested in 3D printing and CNC routing.

Following on from the successful (to the FabLab presenters at least) session on 3D printing delivered a week or two ago at PAVO, I have been asked if a 'follow-up session' on using a CNC router and laser engraver would be appreciated.
We had asked if this was possible at the debrief of the last session and the guys obviously listened.

The FabLab team (the ones from before) are working in Newtown next week and have asked if we would like a 2 hour session on CNC fabrication 'on the way through'.

I have told the FabLab guys 'Yes please' and asked them for possible times and locations – I suggested during the Haven's normal Tuesday afternoon meeting as we have the room in the Royal Britsh Legion Club booked already. I hope to get more answers in the next day or so, I''l get back to you all as soon as I have more details.

The Haven has 2 CNC router/engravers for carving wood and laser engraving for members to use.

Once again, please pass this message around – FabLab would love to have few more folk attending than the 11 who came last time.

If you direct message me with an email address I will keep you right up to date on progress

The session on 3D printing was excellent. 2 guys from the Cardiff Metro Uni's 'FabLab' (fabrication laboratory) explained what 3D printing was all about, and how its versatility makes it a rapidly growing technology. They brought a wide range of examples of 3D printed objects that they have made to illustrate the scope of the process, They also covered a bit on the topic of 3D scanning and finally touched briefly on Laser engraving and cutting.Sadly, of the 22 persons who asked to reserve a place for them, only 12 attended.
It looks as if there is a core of people who would appreciate a 'self help user group' to meet now and then to talk over the highs and lows of their hobby. It will be an ideal introduction to the hobby so we will try to assist them in getting a group off the ground. If anyone is interested please get in touch with me and I'll try to get it organised. The Fab Labs crew sound as if they will be very supportive of the idea and we hope we can persuade them to come back and run a session on using our CNC router and laser engraver and introduce the software we need to use. Watch this space!!
Using these techniques is NOT physically demanding and both hand-eye co-ordination and physical stamina are not needed. It is all about finding or designing the item and then letting the machine do its job for you ( with a tiny bit of finishing at the end).
We expect to hold our first meeting at the Legion Club on Thursday 1st August, starting at 2pm.

Itis laid out to allow at least 7 different hobby or interest groups tomeet at the same time and we hope to get a small woodworking workshopset up outside.

Do you play (or would like tolearn how to play) ?Chess, draughts or Backgammon, Scrabble, Wordigo or other word games, Whist, Cribbage, or othercards games Would you like to join a smallgroup who (or would like to learn how to) ?Surf the internet safely(using our laptopPC’s), Use social media, Knit or crochet, Make items from wood , MakeGreetings Cards, Make items from fabric or design items for 3DprintingOr would you just like to sitand ‘put the world to rights ‘ with others over a cuppa’?
The Haven will be doing all theseat the Royal British Legion Club. Why not pop in and join us, tell uswhat you’d like to do and meet others looking for something to doin a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.Look forward to seeing you soon,Les

One of our members, Dave, wrote an email explaining his lack of experience in 3D printing and what he was looking for.
This is tehe reply from the orgainsers.
The email below from David is pretty much the exact person we are aiming the workshop at. David sounds like he has a passion to learn but just needs a quick start on how to get going, which is exactly what this workshop is aimed at. We aren’t running a training course aimed to bring people into an apprenticeship. Just a short two-hour practical demonstration of the latest tools on the market as well as the basics on how to get started by yourself at home as a hobbyist.

Martin (who runs the course) has an extensive knowledge of all things 3D printing and scanning so can provide answers to best practice questions. Martin makes sure to add 20 mins at the end of each workshop to allow for these types of questions and can answer anything from the most basics of basics to the most in-depth possible.

Still a couple of places open - message me if you want to come along.
